Rev. 06/16/15 Introduction

Greetings! Thank you for picking up the Connect to Protect (C2P) Memphis Community Resource Guide. This directory was created to share valuable resources, services, and programs offered by numerous community organizations in an effort to suppress the HIV/ AIDS epidemic among youth and young adults here in Memphis and the Mid-South. The information in this directory includes a diverse selection of services and programs to address the overall needs of populations with increasing risks.

C2P is a national project of the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network (ATN). The overall mission of C2P is to reduce the HIV/AIDS rates among adolescents and young adults through the collaborative efforts of communities and local health researchers.

C2P Memphis is one of 14 sites across the United States working to battle the growing rates of HIV among our nations’ youth. The goal of C2P Memphis is to mobilize the community to reduce the prevalence of HIV infection among African-American women ages 13-24 within the 38106 target zip code.

HIV/AIDS in Memphis and the Mid-South

Shelby County has the fastest growing rate of HIV infection in the state of . In 2013, 76% of all new HIV diagnoses in the Memphis Transitional Grant Area (TGA) were among males. The Memphis TGA covers eight counties that cross multi-state lines: Tennessee- Shelby, Fayette, and Tipton counties, Crittenden County in , and - DeSoto, Marshall, Tate and Tunica counties.

In 2013, 59% of new diagnoses were among the adolescence young adults 15-34 years of age in the Memphis TGA. Furthermore, African Americans continue to account for the majority of HIV cases. These statistics are troubling; fortunately, improvements in HIV prevention, treatment, and linkage to care services are available and individuals that comply with their treatment plans can improve their quality of life.
