Black-Gum Ridgetop Forest This Community Type Occurs on Fairly Dry Ridgetops
Black-gum ridgetop forest This community type occurs on fairly dry ridgetops. The canopy may be somewhat open; tree growth is somewhat suppressed. These ridgetops may have been exposed to repeated fires. Nyssa sylvatica is the dominant species; Betula lenta (sweet birch), Sassafras albidum (sassafras), Acer rubrum (red maple), Quercus montana (chestnut oak), Q. velutina (black oak), and Q. rubra (red oak) are often present. The shrub layer is dominantly ericaceous; common species include Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel), Gaylussacia baccata (black huckleberry), Vaccinium spp. (blueberry), and Hamamelis virginiana (witch- hazel). The herbaceous layer is generally sparse. Common constituents include Carex pensylvanica (Pennsylvania sedge), Carex communis (a sedge), Epigaea repens (trailing arbutus), Gaultheria procumbens (teaberry), Aralia nudicaulis (wild sarsaparilla), and Pteridium aquilinum (bracken fern). Related types: This type is fairly uniform in composition and is restricted to ridgetops and high shoulders. The "Birch (black-gum) rocky slope woodland" occurs on talus or scree slopes and boulderfields, has an open canopy, and has a wide range of possible associates depending on aspect and location. Abstract Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis L.) is a well-known perennial herb indigenous to forested areas in eastern North America. Owing to conservation concerns including wild harvesting for medicinal markets, habitat loss and degradation, and an overall patchy and often inexplicable absence in many regions, there is a need to better understand habitat factors that help determine the presence and distribution of goldenseal populations. In this study, flora and edaphic factors associated with goldenseal populations throughout Pennsylvania—a state near the northern edge of its range—were documented and analyzed to identify habitat indicators and provide possible in situ stewardship and farming (especially forest-based farming) guidance. -

Spicebush, Lindera Benzoin, a Little Known Foodplant of Papilio Glaucus

LEDERHOUSE, AND LORRAINE CONTARDO Department of Entomology, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14850 Papilio glaucus L., the eastern tiger swallowtail, is one of the most polyphagous of all Papilionidae, yet documented records of it utilizing lauraceous foodplants are rare. Teitz (1954, 1972) is the only author who reports Lindera benzoin (L.), but we have been unable to locate any such original record from the references he listed. Sassafras albidum ( Nutt.) also is recorded by Edwards (1884), French (1885), Scudder (1889) and Teitz (1954, 1972). These authors have apparently cited either Stauffer (1862) or personal communication of John Akhurst. The larval description (" .... the larva of turnus (which was taken from Sassafras) was pea-green above with a yellow edging, beneath purplish brown.") suggests that Stauffer's record is based on a mistaken P. troilus larva. Akhurst records a P. glaucus female ovipositing on Sassafras branches while confined in a box. Five freshly hatched first instal' Papilio glaucus larvae were discovered on leaves of spicebush, Lindera benzoin of the Lauraceae, on Snyder Hill near Thomas Road, Town of Caroline, Tompkins County, New York. This same stand of spicebush yielded P. troilus L. larvae the previous year, although none were found there in 1973. In addition to the P. glaucus larvae found on June 25, 1973, another fertile egg was dis covered on July 11. For comparisons with growth rates on other food plants (Scriber, in prep.), field growth rates of larvae were observed on spicebush until they reached the late stages of the final instal'. -

Blume (Lauraceae), growing in Huntsville, Alabama, was isolated by hydrodistillation. This plant, known commonly as spicebush, was used in native American traditional medicine, and is a host plant of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly, Papilio troilus. The chemical composition of the leaf oil of L. benzoin was determined by GC–MS. The most abundant essential oil components were 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (42.9%), β-caryophyllene (7.7%), bicyclogermacrene (5.1%), δ-cadinene (4.9%), and (E)-nerolidol (4.8%). Twigs are olive-green to brown with numerous light lenticels; leaves are alternate, simple, entire, glabrous or pubescent, elliptic to obovate, 7-13 × 2-6 cm, emit a spicy odor when crushed; the bark is brown to gray-brown with light colored lenticels; flowers, in axillary clusters, are small, pale green to yellow; fruit is a bright red oblong drupe, about 10 mm long [1, 2]. L. benzoin ranges in moist forests of eastern North America from southern Ontario to Florida. -

Watson2 INTRODUCTION Sourgum is a hardwood tree which grows to 75 feet tall, has a medium growth rate, pyramidal shape with horizontal branches growing from a typically straight trunk (Fig. 1). But the shape of the crown varies from tree to tree and, unfortunately, this is looked upon by some architects as undesirable. As the tree grows to 10 and 15-years-old, crown form becomes more uniform among trees. Lower branches droop with age and will need to be removed if used as a street tree. Growth habit is similar to pin oak, a tree which many people are familiar with. Providing a brilliant display of red to deep purple foliage in the fall, Sourgum surprises most people since it does not particularly stand out in the landscape until then. The small, blue fruits may be considered a litter nuisance in urban/suburban plantings but are quite popular with many birds and mammals, and they wash away quickly.
