CRANDELL ABSTRACT Each of three major eruptive periods at Mount Hood (12,000-15,000(7), 1,500-1,800, and 200-300 years ago) produced dacite domes, pyroclastic flows, and mudflows, but virtually no pumice. Most of the fine lithic ash that mantles the slopes of the volcano and the adjacent mountains fell from ash clouds that accompanied the pyroclastic flows. Widely scattered pumice lapilli that are present at the ground surface on the south, east, and north sides of Mount Hood may have been erupted during the mid-1800's, when the last known activity of the volcano occurred. The geologically recent history of Mount Hood suggests that the most likely eruptive event in the future will be the formation of another dome, probably within the present south-facing crater. The principal hazards that could accompany dome formation include pyroclastic flows and mudflows moving from the upper slopes of the volcano down the floors of valleys. Ash clouds which accompany pyroclastic flows may deposit as much as a meter of fine ash close to their source, and as much as 20 cm at a distance of 11 km downwind from the pyroclastic flows. Other hazards that could result from such eruptions include laterally directed explosive blasts that could propel rock fragments outward from the side of a dome at high speed, and toxic volcanic gases. The scarcity of pumiceous ash erupted during the last 15,000 years suggests that explosive pumice eruptions are not a major hazard at Mount Hood; thus, there seems to be little danger that such an eruption will significantly affect the Portland metropolitan area in the near future. 1 INTRODUCTION LOUNT HOOD volcano is situated at the crest of the Cascade Range 75 km east-southeast of Portland, Oreg., and 35 km south of the Columbia River (fig. 1). Because of the volcano's proximity to a large metropolitan area, future erup­ tions have been regarded as a potential threat by geologists and laypersons alike (McBirney, 1966, p. 25; Hammond, 1973; Harris, 1976, p. 264). The principal purpose of this report is to assess the nature and likelihood of this threat to communities around the volcano and to show areas of poten­ tial hazard when eruptions occur in the future. The volcanic- hazards map (pi. 1) that accompanies the report can be used for long-range land-use planning around the volcano and for preparing contingency plans for mitigating the effects of future eruptions. If it is assumed that a volcano will continue to behave as it has in the past, a knowledge of its behavior pattern can pro­ vide a basis for predicting dangers that could result from future eruptions. Mount Hood lacks a well-documented record of historic eruptions. Thus, its past behavior must be analyzed by studying the geologic evidence of prehistoric eruptions.

Completed reconstruction of the trail at the site of a landslide just north of where the loop section of the trail begins. Also reconstructed the trail at the site of a landslide just north of the second bridge across Tanner Creek. Also removed rocks from other portions of the trail, did some brushing, and rebenched the trail where needed. Segment 2: For the second half of the day we moved to the Herman Creek Trail where we used rigging to remove a very large root wad from the trail and then rebenched where the root wad had been. Made two attempts to remove a second root wad from the trail but were defeated both times due to embedded roots. Ramona Falls Hike, Mount Hood Wilderness, Oregon, OR Adventure Description by Tyson Gillard | 06.12.12 The 120-foot Ramona Falls is tucked away on the western flanks of Mount Hood, and while the cascade is a remarkable destination by itself, the trail leading to the falls is equally delightful. You'll begin hiking along the open and sandy bed that flanks the Sandy River. The granular nature of the soil means that the river bed is home to a distinct blend of flora not typically found in the Mount Hood area, such as the many lodgepole pines, Oregon beaked moss, juniper haircap moss and broom moss. Once you've reached Ramona Falls, loop back on the trail’s northern section, where you'll gain a great appreciation for Ramona Creek. The trail follows the creek and adjacent cliffs downstream as it weaves through a forest of western hemlock, noble fir and western red cedar. Rodney Glisan participated as a leader on some of these events. As many as 30 people participated on these hikes. They usually travelled by train to the vicinity of the trailhead, and then took motor coaches or private cars for the remainder of the way. Of the four hikes that are recorded Mount Saint Helens was the first climb undertaken by the Club. July to October Most Difficult Trail Highlights: This trail enters the Mount Hood Wilderness Area. The Timberline Trail is a classic Pacific Northwest trail circumnavigating Mount Hood with alpine vistas, waterfalls, alpine meadows and west side Cascade forest. It was constructed primarily by Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s and encircles Mount Hood at or near treeline. The segment of trail between Timberline Lodge and Yocum Ridge overlaps the Pacific Crest Trail #2000. Trail Description: This trail can be accessed from many different points. The trail climbs in and out of glacial fed drainages throughout its length. Most hikers find the fast moving river fords to be the most challenging part of the trail. Newton, Coe, Muddy Fork, Sandy and White Rivers are typically the most challenging fords but are typically not more than knee deep. Regulations & Leave No Trace Information: Wilderness Permits are required between May 15 and Oct 15. Group size is limited to 12. Stock are counted in the group size. For example, 3 people riding their own horse plus a spare horse in the group for packing would make a group of 7. It wasby far the nosr voluminousof lhe three periods,producing enoughclastic debris to bury the glacialtopography ofthe southwestface of the mountain beneatha snootb debris fan. Snaller debris fans were forned in the upper reachesof the Sandy and Salmon Rivers. Timberline-agelahars trareled the length of the Zigzag and SandyRivers, a disrancein ercesso{90 krn. Thesejahars and associatedfluvial depositshelped forrn flat-floored valleys near the confluenceof these rivers and cr€ated a deha at the mouth of the Sandy at the Colunbia River. The flons probably atlained depthsofg to 12 m above modern river level for nost of their passage.Pyroclastic flows of this age traveled at least 13 km frorn the rent a.€a at Crat€r Rock along the Zigzag or Litle Zigzag Rirers. Between400 and 600 yearsBP, ihe Zigzag erupriveperiod produceddeposirs along the middle reachesof the Zigzag River and the upper Sandy River. Bouldert labars and flurial depositscreated a terrace B to I0 n above present river lerel along the Zigzag and veneereda Timberlin€-aget€rrace on the Sandy River. The Old Maid eruptive period occured b€tw€€n lB0 and 2?0 years BP. A single lahar flowed down the Sandy River at least as {ar as Brightwood,30 }n from Crarer Rock. Sand d€posilsthat may b€ related to this erent are found down to the nouth of the SandyRiver.
