Representations of Jesus in Islamic Mysticism: Defining the „Sufi Jesus‟ Milad Milani Created from the wine of love, Only love remains when I die. (Rumi)1 I‟ve seen a world without a trace of death, All atoms here have Jesus‟ pure breath. (Rumi)2 Introduction This article examines the limits touched by one religious tradition (Islam) in its particular approach to an important symbolic structure within another religious tradition (Christianity), examining how such a relationship on the peripheries of both these faiths can be better apprehended. At the heart of this discourse is the thematic of love. Indeed, the Qur’an and other Islamic materials do not readily yield an explicit reference to love in the way that such a notion is found within Christianity and the figure of Jesus. This is not to say that „love‟ is altogether absent from Islamic religion, since every Qur‟anic chapter, except for the ninth (surat at-tawbah), is prefaced In the Name of God; the Merciful, the Most Kind (bismillahi r-rahmani r-rahim). Love (Arabic habb; Persian Ishq), however, becomes a foremost concern of Muslim mystics, who from the ninth century onward adopted the theme to convey their experience of longing for God. Sufi references to the theme of love starts with Rabia al-Adawiyya (717-801) and expand outward from there in a powerful tradition. Although not always synonymous with the figure of Jesus, this tradition does, in due course, find a distinct compatibility with him.

  • A Study of Fatawas (Religious Decrees)
PSYCHOLOGY AND EDUCATION (2021) 58(3): 2996-3002 ISSN: 00333077 A STUDY OF FATAWAS (RELIGIOUS DECREES) REGARDING TEACHING AND LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE Muhammad Imran Saeed Lecturer, Humanities Department, COMSATS University Islamabad, Vehari Campus [email protected] Dr Saeed Ahmad Assistant Professor, Department of English, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar Campus [email protected] Muhmmad Nasir Lecturer, Department of English, Institute of Southern Punjab Multan [email protected] ABSTRACT: The present study discusses Muslim religious scholars' attitudes in the sub-continent when it was under British rulers' influence. The study focuses on the causes of religious scholars' indifference and their hostile attitudes towards the English language in the pre-partition era. The data has been collected from various fatawa books written by Muslim religious scholars during the pre-partition period. Researchers analyse the fatawas (religious decrees) under the paradigm of Islam and English language and attitudes of religious scholars in the pre- partition era. The fatawas has been examined through a content analysis of the text. The study's findings reveal that Muslim religious scholars were against English language learning and teaching to such an extent that they issued Fatawas declaring that learning and teaching English was illegitimate (Najaiz) because they believed that Christian missionaries were against Muslims and Islam. The findings further suggest that future English language curriculum planning should consider society’s cultural and religious requirements so that everyone in the community can learn English according to their needs. The study also highlights cultural harmony from the perspective of English language learning. • 468 Classical and Modernist Approaches to the Miracles
e-Şarkiyat İlmi Araştırmalar Dergisi/Journal of Oriental Scientific Research (JOSR) ISSN:1308-9633 Ağustos-2019 Cilt:11 Sayı:2 (24) / August-2019 Volume:11 Issue:2 (24) Sayfa:468-479 CLASSICAL AND MODERNIST APPROACHES TO THE MIRACLES IN THE QUR’AN: A DIACHRONIC REVIEW Ahmet Özdemir Abstract In the last two centuries, an increasing number of Muslim scholars have adopted a modernist/decontextualisation approach to the interpretation of the Quran. This adoption is attributable to their worldviews or philosophical approaches that have changed over time. Instead of looking for primary and contextual meanings of words and miraculous events addressed in the Qur’an, they prefer to look at the connotative meanings, which are out of the context. This review argues that such decontextualized interpretations substantially contradict Quranic principles and contextual meanings of miracles. Muslim and non-Muslim, classical and modernist approaches to the Quranic miracles need to be reconsidered, so as to avoid or reduce misinterpretations. For this aim, the author has applied a diachronic (semantic) method of reviewing different approaches to definitions or conceptions of miracles in Arabic dictionaries, Islamic literature, classical standpoints, and modernist viewpoints. Keywords: Quran, Tafsir, Miracle, Semantic, Diachronic Review KUR’ÂN’DA GEÇEN MUCİZELERE KLASİK VE MODERNİST YAKLAŞIMLAR: ART-SÜREMLİ BİR İNCELEME Öz Son iki yüzyıl içinde, giderek artan sayıda Müslüman alim Kuran'ın yorumlanmasında modernist bir yaklaşım benimsemiştir.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Journal of Religion & Film by an authorized editor of DigitalCommons@UNO. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Inception and Ibn 'Arabi Abstract Many philosophers, playwrights, artists, sages, and scholars throughout the ages have entertained and developed the concept of life being a "but a dream." Few works, however, have explored this topic with as much depth and subtlety as the 13thC Andalusian Muslim mystic, Ibn 'Arabi. Similarly, few works of art explore this theme as thoroughly and engagingly as Chistopher Nolan's 2010 film Inception. This paper presents the writings of Ibn 'Arabi and Nolan's film as a pair of mirrors, in which one can contemplate the other. As such, the present work is equally a commentary on the film based on Ibn 'Arabi's philosophy, and a commentary on Ibn 'Arabi's work based on the film. The ap per explores several points of philosophical significance shared by the film and the work of the Sufi as ge, and their relevance to contemporary conversations in philosophy, religion, and art. Keywords Ibn 'Arabi, Sufism, ma'rifah, world as a dream, metaphysics, Inception, dream within a dream, mysticism, Christopher Nolan Author Notes Oludamini Ogunnaike is a PhD candidate at Harvard University in the Dept.

Introduction Islam emerged in a society which already had an economic history. Despite the fact that the early Arab society was pagan in nature, they knew the value of earning and therefore traded. They were also engaged in a wide scale barter economy as this met their immediate needs and wants. Their would have naturally had people minting gold and silver coins since the prevalence of the gold dinār and the silver dirham bear testimony to the usage of these two metallic based coins as the store of economic value and as a medium of commercial exchange. We do take note that early Arab society had no standard mint. The coins must therefore have been produced by different goldsmiths and blacksmiths. However, the coins could be distinguished to some level or the other in regard to where they contained more gold/silver or more alloys.

  • Must Money Be Limited to Only Gold and Silver?: a Survey of Fiqhi Opinions and Some Implications(1)
JKAU: Islamic Econ., Vol. 19, No. 1, pp: 21-34 (2006 A.D/1427 A.H) Must Money Be Limited to Only Gold and Silver?: A Survey of Fiqhi Opinions and Some Implications(1) MUHAMMAD ASLAM HANEEF and EMAD RAFIQ BARAKAT Associate Professor, Department of Economics International Islamic University Malaysia, and Assistant Professor Department of Islamic Economics and Banking Yarmouk University, Jordan ABSTRACT. This paper attempts to provide a survey into the issue of money in Islam. Specifically, it looks at the views of Muslim scholars (primarily past fiqh scholars), on whether money has to be limited to gold and silver or not and discusses some implications of the findings of this brief survey on present day opinions. In this connection it discusses some general points on gold and silver as money, from a historical and ‘contextual’ perspective, followed by some points that are agreed upon by the majority of scholars. It also compares the views of scholars who take the position that only gold and silver can be used as money and the evidences given to support their stand with the views of those who do not limit money to only gold and silver, together with their evidences. 1. Introduction The discussion of money is certainly as old as the economics discipline itself. Early definitions of the discipline were even focused on money/wealth while most measurements today in economics are based on some money value. In the years since the 1997/98 financial crisis, there has been a renewed interest in and perception popularised by some that the Islamic currency as sanctioned in the shari’ah is gold and silver.(2) The crisis created renewed interest in the discussions and debates on money, the monetary system and even calls for a new international financial architecture.

  • Participatory Banking (PB) Taking Measures Against Covid-19 in Turkey Issues and Proposed Strategies Rusni Hassan Zulfahmi
Turkish Journal of TUJISE Islamic Economics Participatory Banking (PB) Taking Measures Against Covid-19 in Turkey Issues and Proposed Strategies Rusni Hassan Zulfahmi Abstract: Not much research has been carried out to examine Participatory Bank (PB) in Tur- key. This is despite the fact that Turkey has a long history in Islamic civilisation. The legacy of strong Islamic law, the majority Muslim population, and the strategic location of the country have failed to serve as a catalyst to boost the market share of participatory banking in the coun- try. The present study aims to explore problems, solutions, and strategies for developing PBs in Turkey. This research also captures the condition of PBs in facing the Covid-19 pandemic. The study adopts a qualitative method that uses library research benefitting from various sources of literature, namely books, journals, and other sources. Semi-structured interviews were conduct- ed with experts including practitioners, regulators, and academicians who have direct involve- ment in PB. The findings are presented in the form of Strength-Weakness-Opportunity-Threat (SWOT) of PBs in Turkey. Interestingly, the preliminary finding shows that the problems of PBs in Turkey stem from both internal and external factors. Lack of understanding and skills, and lack of good Shariah governance practices are the main internal factors. Lack of regulato- ry support, lack of public literacy, lack of academic research and educational institutions, and a regulatory system are the primary external factors. The study suggests two main solutions, namely internal and external solutions, as well as strategies to address the problems. This study could serve as a reference point for the regulator in formulating appropriate policy strategies to increase the market share of PB in Turkey.
