Prologue n a trip to Pennsylvania in 1988 to conduct the Pittsburgh OSymphony Orchestra, Henry Mancini felt an unmistak- able tug luring him back to West Aliquippa, the town where he’d grown up. It had been decades since Henry had been back to see what had become of the place where his life and musical journey began. The musician friends traveling with him from Los Angeles were happy to accompany their beloved bandleader on the impromptu roots trip. Henry shared some of his personal history with his com- panions on the drive. He told them how West Aliquippa was once a thriving steel town where the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company employed the majority of the town’s residents, includ- ing his father. It was not unlike other Rust Belt towns of that era, filled with hard-working immigrant families. As they pulled into what was left of the town, it was clear that Henry had not prepared himself for the level of economic devastation that had befallen West Aliquippa, which seemed to have been reduced to dust and broken glass. There were no people on the street—just a feral cat that darted out in front of their car. They drove around until Henry was able to trace his steps back to Beaver Avenue, which took longer than it should have because things were not all where they used to be. As they turned a corner, he felt a bit disoriented as he searched for numbers on the houses. Then he finally found it: 401, his childhood home.

  • The Gays in This Gay Press Exclusive, Queen Bey Talks Being Inspired by Her Gay Fans, Loving Lady Gaga and Remaking ‘A Star Is Born’
Beyoncé ‘4’ The Gays In this gay press exclusive, Queen Bey talks being inspired by her gay fans, loving Lady Gaga and remaking ‘A Star Is Born’ BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI f there’s any girl who runs the world, it’s Beyoncé. The reigning diva – she’s called Queen Bey for a reason, people – is one of the biggest and best voices behind a long run of hits dating back to the late ’90s, when she was part of Isupreme girl-group Destiny’s Child. Years later, Beyoncé still demonstrates just how irreplaceable she is as a solo artist, having released four albums – and dedicating her latest one, “4,” to that milestone – with some of the most memorable and gay-celebrated singles in pop music history. Not every artist can say they’ve had a gay boy lead a football team to glory by performing “Single Ladies,” as seen on “Glee.” And not every artist can say they have 16 Grammy Awards, making her one of the most honored artists in Grammy history. But that’s Queen Bey, who’s also assembled a gaggle of gay fans who are – you guessed it – crazy in love with her. In this exclusive chat with Beyoncé, her first gay press interview since 2006, the singer/actress/glamour-girl spoke about how the fierceness of her gay fans inspires her, the intimidation she’s feeling following in the footsteps of Judy and Barbra for her upcoming role in “A Star Is Born,” and what she really meant by the “girls” who run the world.

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 16, 2019 Contact: Rebecca Curtiss 617.496.2000 x8841 | 617.872.8254 | [email protected] Creative Team and Cast Announced for American Repertory Theater Premiere of Moby-Dick New Collaboration Between Dave Malloy and Rachel Chavkin To Run December 3, 2019 – January 12, 2020 Download images here. Cambridge, MA – American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University, under the leadership of Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus and Executive Producer Diane Borger, have announced the creative team and cast of Moby-Dick, with music, lyrics, book, and orchestrations by Dave Malloy, developed with and directed by Rachel Chavkin. Performances of the new adaptation of Herman Melville’s classic novel begin Tuesday, December 3 at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, MA. The production opens officially on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 and closes Sunday, January 12, 2020. “We are all in the belly of the whale…” From the creative team behind A.R.T.’s 2015 production of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 comes an epic musical adaptation of Herman Melville’s iconic American novel. As the egomaniacal Captain Ahab drives his crew across the seas in pursuit of the great white whale, Melville’s nineteenth-century vision of America collides head-on with the present. “I’ve always been fascinated with the surprising ways classic literature can resonate with contemporary times, and Moby-Dick is no exception,” says Malloy. “Melville was writing about America in 1851, as the country was struggling to define itself and reconcile all the conflicts that led inevitably to the Civil War; 170 years later, we’re still talking about the same issues— capitalism, democracy, environmentalism, race.
