First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

Video Reviews 3-23-07.Qxp
New On Video & DVD Eragon Is a fantastical adventure in a vein similar to that of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and The Chronicles Of Narnia. A classic story of a quest driven by destiny and set in a land where elves, magi- cians, and humans live side by side, the battle between good and evil, innocence and cynicism, is taken up once again. John Malkovitch camps it up as the evil King Galbatorix, a former guardian of peace who long ago went over to the dark side. He now rules over a land from which dragons have all but disappeared, until humble farm boy Eragon (newcomer Edward Speelers) happens upon a myste- rious blue object that turns out to be a dragon egg. Eragon befriends the charming dragon cub, Saphira (voiced with aplomb by Rachel Weisz), and becomes her rider, designating him as the princi- pal warrior in the fight against evil. Jeremy Irons steals the show as the wise and mysterious old man who becomes Eragon’s mentor, guiding him through the tasks of saving a princess (Sienna Guillory) battling an evil sorcerer (Robert Carlyle, Trainspotting), and fending off hordes of the hideous Urgals. All of this will strike the seasoned fantasy viewer as familiar territory, but the formula is given life by veterans Malkovitch and Irons, as well as the young Speelers. The film was shot mostly in Hungary, whose breathtaking landscape combines to great effect with excellent cinematography. The special effects, created by Lord Of The Rings’ Digital Magic and Star Wars’ Industrial Light and Magic, more than live up to the precedent set by those films, while the dragon is film’s true star. -
Smoking Presentation Trends in U.S. Movies 1991-2008
Smoking Presentation Trends in U.S. Movies 1991-2008 Kori Titus, MBA Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PHD BREATHE CALIFORNIA of SACRAMENTO-EMIGRANT TRAILS and the CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco, California February 2009 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tobacco presentations in commercial motion pictures are of serious public health concern because cumulative exposure to this imagery causes large numbers of adolescents to start smoking.1 An estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation is attributed to this exposure.2,3 To examine trends in the number of tobacco presentations over time, by Motion Picture Association of America age-classification and North American distributor, we surveyed a large sample of films released to U.S. theaters 1991-2008 to trace the proportion of smoking and smokefree films, incidence of tobacco imagery in films with smoking, tobacco impressions (incidents times paid admissions) delivered to theater audiences, and tobacco brand display. Policy advocacy aimed at reducing adolescent exposure to tobacco in youth-rated (G, PG and PG13) films by modernizing the rating system to rate smoking movies R, with some specific exceptions,4 has been directed at the major studio distributors and their parent corporations since 2001. Some companies have adopted public stances that reflect growing public concern over the issue of smoking in youth-rated films. We pay particular attention to smoking trends in youth-rated films over recent years. KEY FINDINGS Analysis of 1,769 films released over the past 18 years established that: • Most youth exposure to on-screen smoking occurs in youth-rated films, par- ticularly PG13. -

Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room. -

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – the Touring Years
1 THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS Release Dates U.S. Theatrical Release September 16 SVOD September 17 U.K., France and Germany (September 15). Australia and New Zealand (September 16) Japan (September 22) www.thebeatleseightdaysaweek.com #thebeatleseightdaysaweek Official Twitter handle: @thebeatles Facebook: facebook.com/thebeatles YouTube: youtube.com/thebeatles Official Beatles website: www.thebeatles.com PREFACE One of the prospects that drew Ron Howard to this famous story was the opportunity to give a whole new generation of people an insightful glimpse at what happened to launch this extraordinary phenomenon. One generation – the baby boomers - had a chance to grow up with The Beatles, and their children perhaps only know them vicariously through their parents. As the decades have passed The Beatles are still as popular as ever across all these years, even though many of the details of this story have become blurred. We may assume that all Beatles’ fans know the macro-facts about the group. The truth is, however, only a small fraction are familiar with the ins and outs of the story, and of course, each new generation learns about The Beatles first and foremost, from their music. So, this film is a chance to reintroduce a seminal moment in the history of culture, and to use the distance of time, to give us the chance to think about “the how and the why” this happened as it did. So, while this film has a lot of fascinating new material and research, first and foremost, it is a film for those who were “not there”, especially the millennials. -
