Baker iv ABSTRACT COSTUME CULTURE: VISUAL RHETORIC, ICONOGRAPHY, AND TOKENISM IN COMIC BOOKS Michael G. Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image.

So here is my addition. In fact, I had corrected other misspellings of Black Lightning and missed those other few. For every superhero, there's a supervillain, and the best ones are usually the loyal ally who turns out to be playing a double-game. Here, our hero is frequently outwitted by his malevolent rivals, the Rogues, despite his supposedly superior brainpower. Interesting plot with plenty of intrigue and action. In short, the Falcon is a hero among heroes. Almost Super 2. Great list, but I find myself enjoying the also ran characters mentioned in the comments section. See comments. Also, if you really want to read a superhero book or know a young middle grader who likes them and could do with some good lessons on friendships and family —then by all means point them toward the first book, Almost Super. With the exception of Spider-Man, almost all of Lee's household-name heroes were drawn by a fellow called Jack Kirby, who never enjoyed the star cameos Stan did in the Marvel movies. • Tony Isabella: Black Thought
Tony Isabella: Black Thought Tony Isabella wants you to know he’s ticked off. For years the industry veteran has championed positive portrayals of black heroes in the pages of comic books. In his Comic Buyer’s Guide column, “Tony’s Tips”, and on the internet he’s raged about the lack of ethnic diversity in comics publishing and the stereotypical treatment of minority characters. So it should come as no surprise that the seasoned writer has taken issue with events in the recently released Green Arrow #31. In his eyes, his most beloved creation -- Black Lightning -- was transformed into a cold-blooded murderer. Black Lightning/Jefferson Pierce sprang from Isabella’s imagination in 1977 to become the first African-American superhero at DC to get his own title. Gifted with electro-magnetic powers, along with a strong sense of community and Christian morality, Jefferson Pierce was designed to be an enduring symbol of justice. But over the years Isabella has watched his original character become distorted, even as he continually slipped on and off DC radar. Black Lightning’s debut series, written by Isabella, only made it to issue #11 before it fell prey to massive cutbacks in 1978. A string of guest appearances in other books such as Detective Comics and the Justice League followed before Black Lightning found a new home with The Outsiders, a street-level superhero team led by Batman, in the mid- 1980’s. After The Outsiders ended in 1988, Black Lightning was again downgraded to guest star status. It wasn’t until 1995 that Jefferson Pierce became a consistent player in the DC universe again.

  • Comic Book Biography: Keith Giffen by Rik Offenberger
Comic Book Biography: Keith Giffen by Rik Offenberger It’s one of the better creator stories of the past couple of years. After a stretch where he could barely get a nod of recognition from Marvel or DC, Keith Giffen is experiencing a career renaissance rarely seen. While he was a major force to contend with in comics in the later ‘80s and ‘90s, thanks to his work on Legion of Super- Heroes and Justice League, both titles ultimately went through major shifts in tone, and as their directions changed, so did their writer. For a long-ish period, it seemed that Giffen was gone from comics as well. His name would pop up occasionally, but for the most part, comics seemed to have moved on, and Giffen wasn’t on the train. Give it a few years, and things do change. With a solid foundation based in translating popular manga series, and some new superhero work through Boom! Studios, Giffen is back in full force, overseeing not one, but two major events: Annihilation at Marvel and 52 at DC. It’s a comeback that would make not only any of Giffen’s contemporaries, but…well, any creator working in mainstream comics jealous. During some of his rare free time, we sat down with Giffen for a look back, around, and forward. Newsarama: Keith, let's just jump into it at the beginning - where did you study art? Keith Giffen: The Little Falls public library. I didn't really have any formal art training and it shows. The year I spent at the NY School of Visual Arts was a faux hippie, metaphysical nightmare and the night courses I took at the DuCret School only reinforced what I'd already pulled from the library's books.

However, only in the past several years have their talent pools mingled, allowing for video game creations with the quality and depth of story necessary to convey the comic book experience. The Early Days The earliest comic book-based video game is 1978’s Superman, created by Atari for the Atari 2600, followed four years later by Parker Brothers’ Spider-Man for the same system. Neither games are anything to write home about, as both games feature blocky, nearly indecipherable graphics, but then again, that’s about all that was possible with the processing power of home consoles at the time. The graphics did not bother gamers, as they were happy to imagine themselves in the role of their favorite comic book heroes.
