‘Th ank God for great journalism. Th is book is a much needed, ex- haustively researched and eff ortlessly well written recent history of Ethiopia. A book that strips away the cant and rumour, the pros and antis and thoroughly explains the people, politics and economics of that most beautiful nation. A superb and vital piece of work by some- one who clearly loves the country of which he writes.’ Bob Geldof ‘Th e great Ethiopian famine changed everything and nothing. It fun- damentally altered the rich world’s sense of its responsibility to the hungry and the poor, but didn’t solve anything. A quarter of a century on, we’re still arguing about the roots of the problem, let alone the so- lution, and—though there has been progress—Ethiopia’s food inse- curity gets worse, not better. Peter Gill was one of the most thorough and eff ective television journalists of his generation. He was there in 1984 and his work at the time added up to the most sensible, balanced and comprehensive explanation of what had happened. Twenty-fi ve years later, he’s gone back to test decades of aspiration against the re- alities on the ground. It’s a book that bridges journalism and history, judicious analysis with a strong, and often gripping, narrative. Always readable, but never glib, this is a must for all those who think there is a simple answer to the famine, still waiting in the wings. ’ Michael Buerk ‘No outsider understands Ethiopia better than Peter Gill. He com- bines compassion with a clinical commitment to the truth.

  • BLACK JACKS Written by Eric Karkheck
BLACK JACKS Written By Eric Karkheck (323) 736-6718 [email protected] Black Jack: noun, 18th Century An African warrior who becomes a pirate. FADE IN: EXT. VILLAGE BEACH, WEST AFRICA - DAY Statuesque TERU FURRO (30s) sits in the sand braiding ropes together into a fishing net. She is left handed because her right is missing its pinky finger. She looks out to the vast ocean. EXT. HIDDEN LAGOON - DAY Blue sky and puffy clouds reflect in the surface of the water. A dugout canoe with a sail skims across it. Tall and muscular CHAGA FURRO (30s) paddles in the stern. His skinny son KUMI (13) is in the bow. Chaga spots a school of tilapia. CHAGA Kumi, mind the net. (Note: Italicized dialogue is spoken in Akan African and subtitled in English.) KUMI Yes, father. Kumi gathers the net into his arms. CHAGA Do it clean. If the lines tangle it will scatter the school. Kumi throws the net overboard. He pulls in the ropes. KUMI They are strong. The ropes zip through Kumi's hands. Chaga catches them. CHAGA Place your feet on the side to give you leverage. Together, they pull the net up and into the canoe to release a wave of fish onto themselves. CHAGA Ha Ha!! Do you see this my son?! Good, good, very good! Mother will be pleased. Yes. 2. Chaga wraps Kumi in a warm hug. Kumi halfheartedly returns the embrace. EXT. ATLANTIC OCEAN - DAY Chaga paddles toward land. Kumi scans the ocean horizon through a mariner's telescope. KUMI Can we go on a trip somewhere? Maybe to visit another tribe? CHAGA We are fishermen.

From the 1970s to the present, the Comic Market (hereafter Comiket) has been a leading venue for manga and anime fan activi- ties in Japan. Over the three days of the convention, more than thirty-seven thousand groups participate, and their dōjinshi (self-published fan fiction) and character goods generate ¥10 billion in sales.1 Contrary to the common stereo- type of anime/manga cult fans—the so-called otaku—who are males in their twenties and thirties, more than 70 percent of the participants in this fan fic- tion market are reported to be women in their twenties and thirties.2 Dōjinshi have created a locus where female fans vigorously explore identities and desires that are usually not expressed openly in public. The overwhelming majority of women’s fan fiction consists of stories that adapt characters from official me- dia to portray male–male homosexual romance and/or erotica.

  • Lesbianism and the Uncanny in Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla
Lesbianism and the Uncanny in Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla Sergio Ramos Torres Trabajo de Fin de Grado en Estudios Ingleses Supervised by Constanza del Río Álvaro Diciembre 2016 Universidad de Zaragoza 0 Contents Introduction 2 1. The vampire in literature and popular culture 5 1.1 Female vampires 10 2. Lesbianism and the uncanny in Carmilla 13 2.1 Contextualisation 13 2.2 Lesbianism and the Uncanny in Carmilla 16 Conclusion 23 Works Cited 25 1 Introduction The figure of the vampire has been present in most cultures, and the meanings and feelings these supernatural creatures represent have been similar across time and space. For human beings they have been a source of fear and superstition, their significance acquiring religious connotations all over the world. The passing of time has modified this ancient horror and the myth has changed little by little, most of the time being softened, giving birth to diverse conceptions and representations that differ a lot from the evil spawn – originating in myth, legend and folklore – that ancient people were afraid of. These creatures have been represented not as part of the human being, but as a nemesis, as the “other”, and as something that is dead but, at the same time, alive, threatening the pure existence of the human by disrupting the carefully constructed borders that civilization has erected between the self and the other, the human and the animal, between life and death. They are, like Rosemary Jackson said, “our relation to death made concrete” (68) and thus, they “disrupt the crucial defining line which separates real life from the unreality of death” (69).
