FROM AN IDEOLOGICAL CENTER TO GEOGRAPHICAL MARGINS ŞTEFAN BAGHIU1 ABSTRACT. Translating Novels in Romania: the Age of Socialist Realism. From an Ideological Center to Geographical Margins. This article uses quantitative research methods to explain the situation of novel translation during the first decades of communism in Romania. The widespread ideas about the period imply that realist-socialism was a univocal ideology that did not permit real cultural development, as it happened in Western countries. However, as the statistics on literary translations in Romanian during the 1940s and the 1950s show, this was one of the first periods of reevaluation for cultural peripheries. Even though it was a result of a strong propaganda mechanism, this kind of cultural program puts a minor self-colonizing culture ”as theorised by Alexander Kiossev,” in front of an impressive international diversity. The main objective of this article is to discuss the morphologies of novel translation during socialist- realism from an objective, quantitative point of view. Keywords: Socialist realism, translation of novel, Romanian culture, Soviet literature, periphery cultures REZUMAT. Scopul principal al acestui 1 Ştefan Baghiu is an MA student at Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. He has published several articles in very influential Romanian cultural journals: Cultura, Vatra, Steaua, Familia, Echinox, Trasilvania. He is interested in the policies of contemporary and recent literatures, particularly in Romanian literature during the communist and the post-communist age. Contact address: <[email protected]>, <[email protected]>. ŞTEFAN BAGHIU articol este să discute morfologiile romanului tradus în timpul realismului socialist dintr-un punct de vedere obiectiv, cantitativ. Cuvinte cheie: Realism socialist, traducerea romanului, cultura română, literatură sovietică, culturi periferice There are two main clichés that underpin the core of twentieth century literature in Romania. According to the former, the diversity and cultural freedom of the interwar period were corrupted by the communist regime after World War II. According to the latter, the 1940s and the 1950s were plain and arid decades that could not offer too many incentives to those willing to study the mechanisms of the literary field2. The former may be partially true: there was, of course, a great tendency

  • Niche Parties in the Benoit and Laver Expert Survey
Niche parties in the Benoit and Laver expert survey Note: 1) This list is not to be treated as exhaustive as the expert survey restricted itself to the most important parties in each country. Many smaller parties are therefore not included in the dataset. 2)Only countries with more than three parties are included in the analysis as it is not reasonable to calculate mean salience scores with just one or two competitors. While smaller party systems may also have niche parties, it is difficult to assess relative levels of salience if the number of other competitors is so small. This excludes Malta and the United States from the sample for this survey. 3) Party family information is taken from the CMP dataset. 4) For more on the survey and precise question wording, see: Benoit, K. and M. • Anti-Establishment Coalition Governments in Southern Europe: Greece and Italy
Anti-establishment coalition governments in Southern Europe: Greece and Italy Vasiliki Georgiadou Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, 136 Syngrou Ave. 17671, Athens, Greece. Email: [email protected] Jenny Mavropoulou Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, 136 Syngrou Ave. 17671, Athens, Greece. Email: [email protected] Abstract Anti-establishment parties with either a left-wing or a right-wing ideological slant have been entering contemporary European Democracies with sizeable vote shares. During the Great Recession, the Greek and the Italian party system could be perceived as convergent case-studies for the formation and breakthrough of anti-establishment parties. Given the fact that ideologically diverging anti- establishment parties – the Coalition of the Radical Left - Social Unionist Front (SYRIZA) and the Independent Greeks (ANEL) in the Greek case, as well as the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the League in the Italian one – came to power and formed coalition governments, the primary goal of this article is to enquire into supply-side parameters, exploring potential associations along a range of programmatic stances and policy dimensions that effectuated these governing alliances. Using the Comparative Manifesto Project dataset, our findings confirm the existence of expected programmatic differences as well as a converging policymaking basis between the anti-establishment coalition partners of both governing alliances. Keywords: anti-establishment parties, SYRIZA, ANEL, M5S, League, supply-side,

  • (Re)Naming Streets in Contemporary Bucharest: from Power Distribution to Subjective Biography
Page|69 (Re)Naming Streets in Contemporary Bucharest: From Power Distribution to Subjective Biography Ana-Maria Niculescu-Mizil University of Bucharest, Romania Abstract The present study is grounded on the premise that street names represent an embodiment of the socio-political order in the realm of everyday life (Azaryahu 2002, 135-144). It develops on three complementary axes of interest: a descriptive statistical analysis of power distribution among genders and professional categories in the current configuration of street names, a case study of Ion Câmpineanu Street as a ‘memorial landscape’ (Dwyer and Alderman 2008, 165 – 178) and the street's subjective history as it is recalled by locals in semi-structured interviews. Research’s findings sustain the idea that individuals invest personal or contextual significance endorsed with emotional resonance, in street names and rarely reflect upon the personalities naming their streets. The case study outlined Ion Câmpineanu Street as a self-contradictory, vivid landscape, an urban setting where several versions of history vindicate their memory. The analysis of street names in sector one reveals an unequal distribution among genders in favor of men, who are prominent in naming streets. The novelty in the present inquiry emerges from a gender sensitive approach upon the subject of street toponymy and social memory. Street names are understood as an embodied instrument employed in the social construction of gender in urban spaces. Keywords: social memory • memorial landscape • street toponymy • power relations • social construction of gender Introduction The cornerstone of the present research consists of Azaryahu's and Light, Nicolae and Suditu's findings according to which street names are established and modified according to principles which reflect the socio-political order of the moment (Azaryahu 1996).

  • A Discussion of the Poem by Mihai Eminescu
"Why Don't You Come?" A Discussion of the Poem by Mihai Eminescu Written by Garry Gamber Mihai Eminescu, 1850-1889, was a writer, journalist, and romantic poet, often celebrated as Romania's greatest and most famous poet. For many years he was considered Romania's national poet and was called "the most important figure in Romanian culture." Even now, his fame pervades modern day Romania. For example, his face has been engraved on a couple of Romania's paper currencies. Also, numerous statues and busts of Eminescu can be found throughout the country. There are several schools and libraries and other buildings named after Eminescu. And the anniversaries of his birth and death are observed with national celebrations. The Poet Eminescu was born and raised in Moldova, the northeast region of Romania. He attended school until age 16 and began publishing some of his poems at that age in a Budapest, Hungary, literary journal. For several years Eminescu worked as a clerk for a theater troupe in the newly named capital city of Bucharest. Throughout this period he continued to write and publish his poetry. Eminescu left the troupe after three years and traveled to Vienna where he studied philosophy for three years. During this period he contributed political articles and poems to a local literary journal. He also became a contributing journalist to a newspaper in Budapest. Eminescu then went to Berlin for two years where he continued his studies. After Berlin, he moved to Iasi, the cultural and economic center of Moldova, Romania, where he worked as the director of the Central Library.

  • Challenger Party List
Appendix List of Challenger Parties Operationalization of Challenger Parties A party is considered a challenger party if in any given year it has not been a member of a central government after 1930. A party is considered a dominant party if in any given year it has been part of a central government after 1930. Only parties with ministers in cabinet are considered to be members of a central government. A party ceases to be a challenger party once it enters central government (in the election immediately preceding entry into office, it is classified as a challenger party). Participation in a national war/crisis cabinets and national unity governments (e.g., Communists in France’s provisional government) does not in itself qualify a party as a dominant party. A dominant party will continue to be considered a dominant party after merging with a challenger party, but a party will be considered a challenger party if it splits from a dominant party. Using this definition, the following parties were challenger parties in Western Europe in the period under investigation (1950–2017). The parties that became dominant parties during the period are indicated with an asterisk. • Parties in Government: the Case of the Five Star Movement and SYRIZA
Italian Political Science, VOLUME 13 ISSUE 2, OCTOBER 2018 Party change in ‘populist’ parties in government: the case of the Five Star Movement and SYRIZA Davide Vittori LUISS GUIDO CARLI UNIVERSITY, ROME Abstract FSM and SYRIZA are the main anti-establishment parties which seized power during the Great Recession. As in the Greek case in 2015, when SYRIZA coalesced with right-wing party ANEL, FSM coalesced with a radical- right party (The League). Regardless of their different ideological backgrounds, both SYRIZA and FSM were relatively ‘new’ parties at the time of their first relevant electoral performance. While the literature has sofar tack- led the issue of the growth of these two parties in their political system, their organizations and their electorates, little has been said in comparative perspective on the internal reforms that the two parties undertook and their institutionalization process. The aim of this paper is to enquire into the nature of the party reforms within those parties, which the literature has labelled as anti-establishment or populist. To what extent do their reforms cor- respond to the theoretical frameworks that were designed in the past for mainstream parties? And, secondly, are these changes that the parties have undergone similar? In what ways? The findings show that, albeit follow- ing different paths, party changes in the two parties followed the same pattern as mainstream parties. Introduction n January 2015, for the first time since Greece’s transition to democracy, the Coali- tion of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) obtained a relative majority in the Greek I Parliament and made an alliance with a newly-established radical-right party, the In- dependent Greeks (ANEL) (Katsourides 2015).
