Elder Abuse By: Dr. Barbara Bellar, MD, JD, MA A dedicated & experienced Family Medicine Physician at MetroSouth Medical Center It is a sad commentary in today's world that we even need to be aware of "Elder Abuse".

Elder abuse is when an older adult experiences harm or mistreatment occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust that is violated. It can be abuse from a family member, neighbor or people that the older person relies on for services.

It can be physical, emotional, financial, sexual, sheer neglect or abandonment. Statistical data is very weak in this area but 25% of vulnerable older adults will report abuse in the previous month. Unfortunately, the majority of elder abuse is perpetrated against women. Adding years to your age or being of female gender, does not mean you subtract the respect and support you deserve as you mature.

So where does an elder victim turn for help and protection? You call always talk to your local police Dept. Or your local church staff. Especially discuss any abuse problem you may be experiencing with your primary care doctor at any point, call their office or make an appointment. Your Family Practice Physician is your personal advocate who will see that you get the help, protection and respect you deserve.

Other assistance options include; 1. Seek out your local Area Agencies on Aging. In Blue Island call the Chicago Dept. On Aging at 312-744-4016 2. Contact the National Center on Elder Abuse at 1-800-677-1116 3. Call the Illinois Dept. On aging Senior Help Line at 1-800-252-8966
