COM | 8 1 8 -563-412 1 BIOGRAPHY MYSTICARTTPICTURES Katy Wallin launched the award-winning, multifaceted casting and production company, MysticArt Pictures. Un- der her leadership, the company has become an innovative force in the entertainment industry. With a fierce commitment to creating visionary and innovative projects, Katy has successfully completed over 800 hours of television programming, over 75 feature films, and thousands of hours of unscripted television shows. Katy’s mission has always been to IMAGINE, COLLABORATE & CREATE... She is proud to have collaborated with and contributed to the careers of Ryan Reynolds, James Earl Jones, Jon Bon Jovi, Jeff Probst Dave Matthews, bernie Mac,Tom Green, Jason Alexander and so many other talented individuals in the Motion Picture and Televi- sion Industry. With her tenacious approach and believing that anything is possible, Katy raised Equity Funds and produced the award-winning and critically acclaimed independent film, Finder’s Fee. The film stars iconic actor James Earl Jones, Oscar nominated actor Robert Forster, Erik Palladino, Matthew Lillard, and Ryan Reynolds. She partnered with writer/director Jeff Probst. Finder’s Fee was acquired and released by Lions Gate Entertainment. Katy has always had a passion for working on projects that promote positive family values and believes it is important to cherish classic literary achievements through the film medium. She produced the award-winning, time-honored classic Where the Red Fern Grows, starring Dave Matthews, which was released by Walt Disney Studios. Katy recently completed producing Tom Green’s feature film Prankstar. Katy has once again teamed up with Jeff Probst to produce Kiss Me, a coming of age story that explores the challenges that accompany being a teenage girl transitioning into adulthood. For 15-year-old Zoe (Sarah Bolger) this transition is further complicated when she learns she has scoliosis and must wear a back brace. Already at an awkward age, Zoe now feels unattractive and -- as many teenagers do-- alienated from her parents. She seeks attention and affection from Chance (John Corbett), the man whose kids she babysits. She may also be develop- ing feelings for her best friend Shelby (Emily Osment). Jenna Fischer (The Office, Hall Pass), Rita Wilson ( Wife, It’s Complicated), Steven Weber (Wings, Without a Trace), and Emily Bicks round out a stellar cast. Jeff Probst will also be directing this feature, which is a beautiful story written by Liz Sarnoff (Lost, Deadwood, Alcatraz). When Katy expanded MysticArt to include an unscripted television department, the company quickly earned a reputation for being one of the most established and well respected in the industry. Katy has had the privilege of working with almost every major broadcast and cable network including ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, HBO, MTV, USA, OWN, Oxygen, Lifetime, Bravo, TLC, and E! Entertainment. This led to projects such as the hit television series WIPEOUT (Season 1-5), The Choice, Million Dollar Money Drop, THe Moment, Dating in the Dark, The Mole, How to Look Good Naked, Top Design, Paradise Hotel, Nanny 911, just to name a few. Because of her extensive network and relationships with talent, Katy has further expanded by creating, developing, and packaging new television content and providing production services to networks and other production companies. She recently created and executive produced a real life romantic comedy Welcome to the Family. She partnered with media mogul Reveille Entertainment and the late Bernie Mac to produce the pilot for NBC. Katy has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra, MTV, Entertainment Weekly, People Magazine, LA Times, New York Times, and several other national television shows and publications. She has lec- tured all over the US and was a guest instructor at USC and UCLA where she developed curriculum on what it takes to build, launch and sustain a successful brand in the industry. In addition to having served as the Vice-President of the Casting Society of America, Katy is an active member of organizations such as the Independent Feature Project West and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and cofounder of the Women’s Image Network; a non-profit organization which offers development money to those who create projects for film and television which depict women in a more positive light. • CP UNITED STATES of TARA 4P.Indd

  • Narrative Pleasure and Uncertainty Due to Chance in Survivor
Mary Beth Haralovich Michael Trosset Department of Media Arts Department of Mathematics University of Arizona College of William and Mary 520 621-7800 757 221-2040 [email protected] [email protected] “Expect the Unexpected”: Narrative Pleasure and Uncertainty Due to Chance in Survivor In the wrap episode of Survivor’s fifth season (Survivor 5: Thailand), host Jeff Probst expressed wonder at the unpredictability of Survivor. Five people each managed to get through the game to be the sole survivor and win the million dollars, yet each winner was different from the others, in personality, in background, and in game strategy. Probst takes evident pleasure in the fact that even he cannot predict the outcomes of Survivor, as close to the action as he is. Probst advised viewers interested in improving their Survivor skills to become acquainted with mathematician John Nash’s theory of games. Probst’s evocation on national television of Nash’s game theory invites both fans and critics to apply mathematics to playing and analyzing Survivor.1 While a game-theoretic analysis of Survivor is the subject for another essay, this essay explores our understanding of narrative pleasure of Survivor through mathematical modes of inquiry. Such exploration assumes that there is something about Survivor that lends itself to mathematical analysis. That is the element of genuine, unscripted chance. It is the presence of chance and its almost irresistible invitation to try to predict outcomes that distinguishes the Survivor reality game hybrid. In The Pleasure of the Text, Roland Barthes explored how narrative whets our desire to know what happens next.2 In Survivor’s reality game, the pleasure of “what happens next” is not based on the cleverness of scriptwriters or the narrowly evident skills of the players.

HBO Leads 60th Primetime Emmys 30 Rock, Mad Men Take Top Series September 21, 2008 A 1960s advertising agency, a fictional sketch-comedy show and the second president of the United States were among the big winners at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. Among the twenty-eight awards handed out over the course of the Television Academy’s diamond anniversary event, which was telecast live on ABC, HBO topped the night with 10 winged statuettes. NBC followed with four. Combined with its awards at last Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys, HBO led for the year as well, with 26 in all. Leading the recipients of multiple awards between the two awards ceremonies was HBO’s seven-part historical miniseries John Adams, with 13 Emmys, surpassing a miniseries record set by another HBO production, Angels in America, which won 11 in 2004, and ABC’s Eleanor and Franklin, which won 11 in 1976. It was an evening of milestones and memories. Among the September 21 ceremony’s firsts: the Primetime Emmys’ debut in their new venue, NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, in downtown Los Angeles. In another landmark, 2008 was the first time an Emmy was awarded for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. The five nominees, Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor) and Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) — commemorated the new category by hosting the festivities. In addition, a new record was set for consecutive wins in a single category when Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart prevailed as outstanding variety, music or comedy series and CBS’s The Amazing Race was named outstanding reality-competition program.
