While peace, love and harmony is the goal of Rasta, that’s not the essence of Rasta. Moveme nt? So I was very surprised at the messages I got when I decided to play some reggae songs in support of the protestors in Ferguson, Baltimore and Tel Aviv. One person even went as far to tell me that reggae is love and the music I was FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK posting was not reggae. I am not making this up. I was posting songs from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown and Max Romeo. We are talking about the king of reggae, the prince of reggae, the 18 Kara 67K likes stepping razor himself and a living legend in Max Romeo. The songs I posted were songs like “Revolution”, “Burning and Looting” and “Get up stand up” by Bob Marley. I also posted Like Page “Revolution” by Dennis Brown and “Equal Rights and justice” by Peter Tosh. Be the first of your frie How could someone claim to love reggae but nd some of the classic reggae songs oensive? The reason is a lot of people heard Bob Marley’s song “One Love” and have no idea what the term means or even who coined the term. “One Love” is a term coined by Marcus Garvey and it was not meant to be a Kumbaya song. One Love was a phrase for Blacks to unite and return to the motherland. Some white people also choose to conveniently ignore the part in the song where Bob Marley says, “Let’s get together to ght this Armageddon”. Who is he telling to let’s get together and who are they going to ght against? Again, Rasta is not all about one love. In fact, the motto of the Nyabinghi is, “Death to all Black and White oppressors”. So trying to stie certain reggae songs and pigeon hole militant Rastas as weed smoking hippies is ridiculous. So I could https://www.18karatreggae.com/2015/05/05/the-dilution-and-destruction-of-rasta-and-reggae/ 2/59 12. 3. 2018 The dilution and destruction of Rasta and Reggae. play Bob Marley’s “One Love” but I mute the part about ghting the Armageddon and I should not play his songs like “Revolution” or “Get up stand up”? It is alright when Dennis Brown says “Here I come with love and not hatred”, but not when he says “Are you ready to stand up and ght the right revolution?” If you are just on the Rasta bandwagon because it seems cool, please hop o. Rasta is way deeper than just being cool. Reggae is way deeper than just being cool. Big up all protestors from Baltimore to Tel Aviv. As Bob Marley said,”Arm in arm with arms we ght this struggle.. CANOE -- JAM! - Tribute to late reggae great Mittoo 5/17/08 9:05 AM March 14, 2008 Tribute to late reggae great Mittoo By ERROL NAZARETH - Sun Media TORONTO - "He made me a better keyboard player in 30 seconds." That's keyboardist Jason Wilson reminiscing about reggae icon Jackie Mittoo's magic touch. And it was a magic touch, indeed. Widely considered one of the architects of reggae, rocksteady and ska music, Mittoo began playing keyboards when he was just four. And by 15, he became the musical director at Studio One, the legendary Jamaican label that was operated by Clement (Coxsone) Dodd, one of reggae's most prolific producers. Shortly after hooking up with Dodd, Mittoo formed one of the most influential ska bands in history, The Skatalites. To get an idea of his talent, consider this: Dodd stipulated that Mittoo would be paid only if he delivered five new rhythms every week! "I believe that," says Wilson, who was a close friend of the prolific songwriter. "He's the creator or co-creator of so many classic rhythm tracks like ram jam, pass the kutchie and dream song that are continuing to be reproduced by reggae and non-reggae artists. I can't even begin to list the people that Jackie collaborated with." Wilson says one of the reasons he admired Mittoo was because he elevated the role of keyboards and organ in reggae. "He helped popularize the idea that you could have multi keyboard parts on a single song," Wilson says. "For instance, he was big on clavinets and string pads and then he'd have a rhythm organ and then, of course, he'd have a lead organ.

M i c h a e l W a d d a c o r p r e s e n t s Strange Brew Celebrating seminal rock music | Edition 11 | Sunday September 30 2007 So much trouble in Jamaica The dark prelude to making the Exodus album The international big-hit album by Bob Marley and the Wailers, Exodus, and its subsequent three studio albums may never have been made. Thanks to amateurish marksmanship, Marley, his manager, Don Taylor, his former wife, Rita, and others were saved from death when masked gunmen burst into the Marley home at 56 Hope Road in Kingston 6 on the night of December 3 1976 and sprayed bullets at and around them – none of which was fatal. The group then left Jamaica and went into prolonged exile in Babylon, during which time they recorded their Exodus album and most of the material for its follow-up, 1978’s Kaya album. major turning point in Bob Marley’s comparatively short, but highly influential Ainternational music career occurred in 1972 when he and the Wailers were signed to Chris Blackwell’s hip and growing Island Records label, which by now was expanding beyond rock and folk-rock (eg, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, Free, Jade Warrior, Spooky Tooth and Traffic) to embrace the emerging sounds of reggae, ska and Bob Marley … hip, happy, cool, gifted and the associated musical idioms of Jamaica and the undisputed Poet Laureate of Reggae wider West Indies. Dooley, Jim – “Natty Never Get Weary Yet: The Story of Culture”, The BEAT, Volume 22, No. 5, 2003, pp. 30-35. Reggae music is a genre full of interesting individuals, but Culture’s lead singer Joseph Hill has to be considered one of its most complex and engaging performers. At times Hill speaks in metaphors, and at other times he can be completely straightforward. Hill is not only one of the true veterans of reggae music; he is one of its most bold performers and unique personalities. Much of Hill’s individuality can be heard in the group’s vibrant new album titled World Peace (Heartbeat Records). On the recording, Hill revisits themes he has sung about throughout his lengthy career, but at the same time the album breaks new artistic ground. In spite of having been in the recording business for over thirty years, Hill seems as determined as ever to spread his unique message. When he first sang ‘Natty Never Get Weary’ in the late 1970s, who knew the song title would still apply to him in the year 2003? When asked to consider the sound on the recently issued World Peace, Hill has a one- word answer, “demanding!” A long time believer that reggae music has deteriorated in the digital era, Hill adds, “You have to use musicians because, the dead instrument by itself is quite lonely, and I don’t love the lonely sound because music was meant to be man’s company.” As Culture’s lead singer and chief songwriter, Hill insists that reggae music requires both strong lyrical and musical qualities.
