Notes on the distribution of Augyles marmota (Kiesenwetter, 1850) (Heteroceridae), Trichodes punctatus Fischer von Waldheim, 1829 (Cleridae), Laena reitteri Weise, 1877 (Tenebrionidae), Brachysomus ornatus Stierlin, 1892, Lixus cylindrus (Fabricius, 1781) (Curculionidae), Mylacomorphus globus (Seidlitz, 1868) (Curculionidae) are given. During a short collecting trip to Montenegro in 2014, 26 locations were sampled and 692 specimens belonging to 45 species of water beetles were collected. The following species are recorded for the first time from Montenegro: Haliplus dal- matinus J. Müller, 1900, Haliplus heydeni Wehncke, 1875, Haliplus laminatus (Schaller, 1783), Hydroporus erythrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Hyphydrus anatolicus (Guignot, 1957), Melanodytes pustulatus (Rossi, 1792) and Rhantus bistriatus (Bergsträsser, 1778). The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. The evolution of the coleopteran suborder Adephaga is discussed based on a robust phylogenetic background. Analyses of morphological characters yield results nearly identical to recent molecular phylogenies, with the highly specialized Gyrinidae placed as sister to the remaining families, which form two large, reciprocally monophyletic subunits, the aquatic Haliplidae + Dytiscoidea (Meruidae, Noteridae, Aspidytidae, Amphizoidae, Hygrobiidae, Dytiscidae) on one hand, and the terrestrial Geadephaga (Trachypachidae + Carabidae) on the other. The ancestral habitat of Adephaga, either terrestrial or aquatic, remains ambiguous. The former option would imply two or three independent invasions of aquatic habitats, with very different structural adaptations in larvae of Gyrinidae, Haliplidae and Dytiscoidea. Existing ecological records relating to the estate have been sought out. These have been collected in a single spread sheet. A survey of several small lochs in one catchment on the estate has shown that the invertebrate assemblage of the aquatic ecosystem is not abundant, but is reasonably diverse. The members of invertebrate communities identified are mainly acid-tolerant, pollution-sensitive taxa, and as such are consistent with the flora, geology and land-use of the area. Abstract The ecology of ponds is threatened by urbanisation and as cities expand pond habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate. Pond communities are structured by local (water quality, physical) and regional (land-use, connectivity) processes. Since ca1904 >80% of ponds in Birmingham, U.K., have been lost due to land-use intensification, resulting in an increasingly diffuse network. A survey of thirty urban ponds revealed high spatial and temporal variability in water quality, which frequently failed environmental standards. Most were eutrophic, although macrophyte-rich, well connected ponds supported macroinvertebrate assemblages of high conservation value. Statistically, local physical variables (e.g. shading) explained more variation, both in water quality and macroinvertebrate community composition than regional factors. -

136 entomologische berichten 69 (4) 2009 Notities over de Nederlandse status en de Europese verspreiding van Gyrinus natator, G. colymbus en G. urinator (Coleoptera: Gyrinidae) Bas Drost TREFWOORDEN Faunistiek, verspreiding, schrijvertjes Entomologische Berichten 69(4): 136-141 De familie Gyrinidae, bekend onder de naam ‘schrijvertjes’, is een groep waterkevers waarvan de vertegenwoordigers opvallen door hun glimmende uiterlijk en door de grote beweeglijkheid waarmee zij zich over het wateroppervlak verplaatsen. Het voorkomen in Nederland van drie soorten schrijvertjes, Gyrinus natator (L.), G. colymbus Er. en G. urinator Ill., wordt hier besproken. Gyrinus colymbus wordt als nieuw gemeld voor de Nederlandse fauna. Van G. urinator bestaat enkel één twijfelachtige waarneming, zodat deze soort niet als inlands kan worden beschouwd. De onderzochte collecties leverden van G. natator alleen oude waarnemingen op tot 1930. Nieuwe waarnemingen van G. natator uit ons land blijven mogelijk, zeker omdat de soort recent gemeld is uit België van een locatie dichtbij de Nederlandse grens. Several names of Gyrinidae taxa have been found in the literature which are given with incorrect publishing dates. The correct data could be assigned to these taxa by specifying the true publishing dates mainly of fi ve important works: Aubé’s ‘Species général’ is dated September 29, 1838, and the third part of his ‘Iconographie’ December 31, 1838; Hatch’s ‘Phylogeny of Gyrinidae’ is dated 1926 instead of 1925; Modeer’s work on Gyrinidae is dated 1780 instead of 1776; Ochs’ works on Dineutini are dated again 1926 instead of 1927. Incorrectly cited publishing data of a few further works are also rectifi ed. Nomenclatural notes on several names in the family Gyrinidae are provided. These are on generic level Potamobius Stephens, 1829b, and Potamobius Hope, 1838, which are both juni- or subjective synonyms of Orectochilus Dejean, 1833 as well as junior primary homonyms of Potamobius Samouelle, 1819 (Decapoda), and thus they are perma- nently invalid. Five specifi c names were found to be junior primary homonyms. One of them, Gyrinus orientalis Régimbart, 1883 is replaced by Gyrinus mauricei nom. nov. Three names are not only junior homonyms, but also junior subjective synonyms, and thus no replacement name is currently needed: Gyrinus striatus Olivier, 1795, Gyrinus urinator Drapiez, 1819, and Gyrinus lineatus Lacordaire, 1835. -

Racula-Modrzewiowa 5, 66-004 Zielona Góra, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: On the basis of original field surveys, carried out in Bulgaria in 2010, 2012 and 2015, 137 water beetle species from 12 families were recorded, 23 species new to this country. Compared with the 254 species from these families already known from Bulgaria, this figure is ca 9%, a significant result for a European country. Only within the Hydradephaga have the authors confirmed the satisfactory state of knowledge of the relevant fauna of Bulgaria, since the 2 new species as against 144 known ones makes up just 1.4%. In contrast, the percentages of species new to Bulgaria within the families Hydrochidae, Hydrophilidae and Helophoridae are 300% (sic!), 25% and 36.3% respectively, which indicates the poor state of knowledge of this group of beetles. Submission of Manuscripts: Works published or under consideration elsewhere (including on the internet) will not be accepted. At first submission, one double spaced hard copy (text and tables) with figures (may not be original) must be sent to the Editors, Dr. Hüseyin Özdikmen for publication in MEZ. All manuscripts should be submitted as Word file or PDF file in an e-mail attachment. If electronic submission is not possible due to limitations of electronic space at the sending or receiving ends, unavailability of e-mail, etc., we will accept “hard” versions, in triplicate, accompanied by an electronic version stored in a floppy disk, a CD-ROM. Review Process: When submitting manuscripts, all authors provides the name, of at least three qualified experts (they also provide their address, subject fields and e-mails). Then, the editors send to experts to review the papers. The review process should normally be completed within 45-60 days. After reviewing papers by reviwers: Rejected papers are discarded. For accepted papers, authors are asked to modify their papers according to suggestions of the reviewers and editors.
