Demaree, Jr., Dean ofthe Arts Eight o'clock Tuesday, November 10, 1992 Campus Auditorium 1992-1993 Season, Tenth Program Shortly before Franz Peter Schubert's (1797-1828) death, the first section of his song cycle Winterreise. to the texts ofWilhelm Miiller, was published in Vienna. The review, which appeared in the Wiener Allgemeinc Thcatcrujtung of the 29th March 1828, reads as follows: "Schubert has understood his poet with the kind of genius that is his own. His music is as naive as the poet's expression; the emotions contained in the poems are as deeply reflected in the composer's own foelings, and these are so brought out in sound that none can sing or hear them without being touched to the heart." The above statement can be applied to the bulk of the ~composedby this master of song. Song literally poured out of Schubert. For example, on 19 August 1815, he produced five songs to Goethe texts: Der Rattenfanger. Der Scha(7griiber, Bundeslied, An deg Mond and Heidenroslein. Such days were not atypical. Schubert's great innovation was the wedding of the music of the theater to the music of the folk in his 630 songs. In addition, he increased the role of the piano to that of an equal with the voice. The 1992-93season fmds John Wustman and his Schubert class engaged in the third of a six-year cycle devoted to the study and performance of all the songs of Schubert, in modified chronological order, culminating in January 1997, the 200th anniversary of the birth of the composer. Supported by the School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where Mr. Wustman bas been engaged since 1968, this historic series of concerts gives singers, pianists, and the general public the opportunity to examine minutely the miraculous songs of the acknowledged master of the genre. --Thomas H. Franz (Peter) Schubert was born in the suburbs of Vienna on the last day of January 195 years ago. five years hence, in 1997. the whole world will 1797-1828 venerate his memory and hjs music in festjval performances. Much of that veneration will focus on the Schubert lieder, for his songs - and he wrote well over six hundred of them - reflect his fashioning and refining of a splendid, almost new form of aesthetic expression. •1 work every morning•. Schubert said of himself. "When I have finished one piece I begin another.• (He finished eight, no less, on a single day in 1815, a year in which - in addition 10 other wodcs - be composed 144 songs! He was only 18, yet each one he wrote that season was crafted with all the care and pl'ecision of a Rembrandt working over a miniature.) Following the success of Ahnfrau, however, Grillparzer returns to a much more widespread use of Classical themes, motifs and vocabulary, especially in Sappho, Grillparzer's mood in the period 1816-21 was one of introversion and pessimism, and there is an emphasis on the vocabulary of quiet peace and withdrawal.

[1] The formation of large impact basins (diameter D ≥ 300 km) was an important process in the early geological evolution of Mercury and influenced the planet’s topography, stratigraphy, and crustal structure. We catalog and characterize this basin population on Mercury from global observations by the MESSENGER spacecraft, and we use the new data to evaluate basins suggested on the basis of the Mariner 10 flybys. Forty-six certain or probable impact basins are recognized; a few additional basins that may have been degraded to the point of ambiguity are plausible on the basis of new data but are classified as uncertain. The spatial density of large basins (D ≥ 500 km) on Mercury is lower than that on the Moon. Morphological characteristics of basins on Mercury suggest that on average they are more degraded than lunar basins. These observations are consistent with more efficient modification, degradation, and obliteration of the largest basins on Mercury than on the Moon. This distinction may be a result of differences in the basin formation process (producing fewer rings), relaxation of topography after basin formation (subduing relief), or rates of volcanism (burying basin rings and interiors) during the period of heavy bombardment on Mercury from those on the Moon.

The marionette has been everywhere and is everywhere. One cannot write of the puppets without saying more than one had in- tended and less than one desired: there is such a piquant insistency in them. The purpose of this book is altogether modest, but the length of it has grown to be presumptuous. As to its merit, that must be found in the subject matter and in the sources from which the material was gathered. If this volume is but a sign-post pointing the way to better historians and friends of the puppets and through them on to more puppet play it will have proven merit enough. The bibliography appended is a far from complete list of puppet literature. It includes, however, the most important works of modern times upon mario- nettes and much comment, besides, that is casual or curious or close at hand.
