A SURVEY of YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS a Dissertation
A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Robin A. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills. -

Our awareness can be increased only with powerful means. We should keep in mind that growth should not result in dilution of yoga. This newsletter must always carefully take traditional yoga practices ahead with the time. As said by a famous Yogi "Yoga has a complete message for humanity. It has a message for the human body, it has a message for the human mind and it also has a message for the human soul. Will youth come forward to carry this message, not only in India but in every corner of the world?" I wish that the newsletter will gain popularity among the masses. I hope that IYA will prosper to carry this message. - Dr HR Nagendrari, Senior Vice President Indian Yoga Association – a realization of a dream! It is a matter of great pride that Indian Yoga Association (IYA) has become active again. -

MORE PRAISE FOR QUIETING THE MONKEY MIND “Having herself benefitted from their beautiful music, my friend Naomi Judd told me about the husband and wife team of renowned musicians and purveyors of peace, Dudley and Dean Evenson, and shared, ‘you need to know these two and their music.’ So I did just that. I invited Dudley and Dean to perform live for some of my guided group meditations. As I discovered for myself, along with my workshop attendees, their musical gifts are immeasurable. The collaboration was beautiful and raised the experience to a higher level. Meditation with music can truly be transcendent. With their book, Quieting the Monkey Mind, Dudley and Dean transcend traditional teachings and skillfully guide us to disconnect from the noise of life while helping us make a deeper and more peaceful connection with ourselves. Their profound collective wisdom shared within these pages is what we can all benefit from to better understand the benefits of meditation, music, and for achieving the harmony we all seek.” —JOAN BORYSENKO, New York Times bestselling author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind “Music has been at the core of my being all my life. Amidst my personal and professional busyness of family and career, meditation is a practice that I need and can never have too much of. But, making the time, and getting to that ‘quiet place’ is sometimes a challenge. Well, help has arrived! My longtime friends Dudley and Dean Evenson, renowned musicians and creators of tranquil and peaceful music, have written a beautiful book that teaches meditation and the value of incorporating music into your practice. -

About this Document by A. G. Mohan While reading the document please bear in mind the following: 1. The document seems to have been written during the 1930s and early 40s. It contains gems of advice from Krishnamacharya spread over the document. It can help to make the asana practice safe, effective, progressive and prevent injuries. Please read it carefully. 2. The original translation into English seems to have been done by an Indian who is not proficient in English as well as the subject of yoga. For example: a. You may find translations such as ‘catch the feet’ instead of ‘hold the feet’. b. The word ‘kumbhakam’ is generally used in the ancient texts to depict pranayama as well as the holdings of the breath. The original translation is incorrect and inconsistent in some places due to such translation. c. The word ‘angulas’ is translated as inches. Some places it refers to finger width. d. The word ‘secret’ means right methodology. e. ‘Weighing asanas’ meaning ‘weight bearing asanas’. 3. While describing the benefits of yoga practice, asana and pranayama, many ancient Ayurvedic terminologies have been translated into western medical terms such as kidney, liver, intestines, etc. These cannot be taken literally. 4. I have done only very minimal corrections to this original English translation to remove major confusions. I have split the document to make it more meaningful. 5. I used this manuscript as an aid to teaching yoga in the 1970s and 80s. I have clarified doubts in this document personally with Krishnamacharya in the course 2 of my learning and teaching. -

A Global Understanding of the Spirit Grace Si-Jun Kim
A Global Understanding of the Spirit Grace Si-Jun Kim e are living in a global world. People of various ethnicities, religions and cultures are coming together to live as neigh <W bors side by side. As we enter this world of globalization and inter-reliance, it is clear that we must be able to dialogue and com municate with others so that there can be harmony and peace in the world. In this global world, many travel or emigrate to other countries. Cultures are constantly meeting one another. Some who emigrate to the West experience racism and being treated as inferior, different, and as the Other. Therefore, as various cultures and religions sometimes collide, and sometimes transform and merge with one another, it is important to understand the Other and seek to find common ground through dia logue, understanding and embracing of the Other. One such common place to stand among different religions and cultures lies in understand ing the Spirit. For some time, many have imagined that Christianity and the West dominated the definitions and understanding of the Spirit. But would it not be better to allow "the East" to help define the Spirit. The Spirit is present in many cultures and religions. As such it is important to ask whether there is one Spirit or many. There was a time, and even in some today when Christianity sug gests that it has the "true Spirit" and that other Spirits found in the world are lesser or evil. This paper compares a given thread of the Christian understanding of the Holy Spirit, and brings it into a dia- logical encounter with the Asian understanding of Chi. -
