Accepted manuscript version of: Schwanebeck, Wieland. “Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena.” Contemporary Masculinities in the UK and the US: Between Bodies and Systems, edited by Stefan Horlacher and Kevin Floyd, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, pp. 75–98, doi:10.1007/978-3-319-50820-7. Wieland Schwanebeck (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena Though it may not have required drastic proof, recent news from the political arena suggests that certain distinguished statesmen tend to rely on a candid exhibition of genitals in order to draw attention to their virility and, by implication, to their political power. Silvio Berlusconi made the headlines in 2010, when he insisted that the missing penis of a Mars statue be restored before the sculpture was deemed suitable to adorn his office as Italian Prime Minister, horrified reactions amongst art historians notwithstanding (cf. Williams). This anecdote sits comfortably amongst other tales from the bunga bunga crypt, yet one may as well wonder whether Berlusconi is not just a tad less inhibited than some of his colleagues when it comes to acknowledging that the body politic requires visible proofs of manhood. Slavoj Žižek has characterized the contemporary media environment as one in which it would not appear out of the question for a politician to “allow a hard-core video of his or her sexual shenanigans to circulate in public, to convince the voters of his or her force of attraction or potency” (208).

  • Hbo Premieres All New Series Girls and Veep
HBO PREMIERES ALL NEW SERIES GIRLS AND VEEP  Miami, July 9, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced that Girls and Veep, two new original comedies, will premiere on July 23. The first episode of both productions will be available on www.hbomax.tv after they air onscreen. Girls is a comedy directed by Lena Dunham, the up-and-coming filmmaker and actor, who also stars in the series. Veep stars Emmy®-award-winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has starred in popular series like Seinfield and Curb your Enthusiasm.  Created and led onscreen by Lena Dunham, Girls takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of women in their early 20s living in New York City. The series, which has already been renewed for a second season, focuses on the girls’ adventures in post-collegiate floundering.  A fresh and intimate look at friendship, relationships and self-discovery, Girls is a contemporary coming-of-age show that packs humor, farce and poignancy into each episode. Through four distinct characters, who may seem unlikely friends to some, Girls shines through as a voice of the post-recession generation who can hardly afford lunch, let alone Manolos. In addition to Lena Dunham as the anxious, rumpled Hannah, the cast of Girls includes Jemima Kirke as the beautiful Jessa, allergic to all things bourgeois; Allison Williams as Marnie, Hannah’s uptight roommate with strict rules about their best-friendship; Zosia Mamet (Mad Men) as Shoshanna, an NYU student and Jessa’s self-help obsessed roommate and cousin; and Adam Driver (HBO’s You Don’t know Jack) As Hannah’s love interest, Adam.

William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Arts › Features Reviews Books Review: Punt and Dennis – Ploughing on Regardless Hilarious radio duo Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt take to stage as Katy Sandalls reviews Monday 17 February 2014 Photo courtesy of Punt and Dennis ★★★★☆ As a perennial fan of Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt’s inputs on the BBC Radio 4 programme The Now Show, the prospect of seeing them live on stage promised to be a treat – and it didn’t disappoint. Indeed, sat in the majestic setting of the York Grand Opera House, at times it felt like I was at a recording of the radio show with Punt producing his usual masterful set ups for Dennis to later pick up and run with. And run he did, with topics ranging from the TV listings experience to our obsession with the snow the show touched upon every possible avenue. One thing that did come across, lost to a radio audience, was Dennis’ mastery of visual comedy. A particular favourite being his take on the giving out of buns in Denmark to celebrate the signing of the treaty of Rome. That was the first and probably the last time I will see a man old enough to be my father walk in circles around a stage with the flap of jacket lifted up showing the audience his “beautiful buns”. Punt’s earlier cynical comment really summed this up well; the pair are indeed “wasted on the radio”.
