We moviegoers have been obsessed with multiple personality disorder for decades, even if Charlie Kaufman from Adaptation reckons it’s the number one most overused idea in fi lm screenplays ever (apparently the second most overused is serial killers). Now Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to produce and star in a fi lm about the fi rst man who ever used the disorder as a successful legal defence, in the upcoming biopic The Crowded Room. It’s based on an early ‘80s biography about Billy Milligan, who was arrested for rape, armed robbery and a string of other felonies and went to trial in the late ‘70s. His psychologist diagnosed him with MPD, asserting that Billy had 24 different personalities. We don’t care what Kaufman says – we’re excited about this one.
