  • Australian Exchange (Kalgoorlie) 2017
Australian Exchange (Kalgoorlie) 2017 Erena Hosford—RMIP Wairarapa We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love… and then we return home. – Australian Aboriginal Proverb The super pit In July 2017 I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to be placed in rural Western Australia for two weeks of my 5th year medical training. I was placed at Kalgoorlie Hospital in the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which is in the goldfields 595km inland from Perth. The town has a population of over 32,000 people and was founded in 1893 during the gold rush. The largest employer in the area is the ‘Super pit’, an open cut gold mine, which is over 3 km long. The evening my fellow RMIP classmate and I landed in Kalgoorlie we were greeted at the airport by staff from the medical school who took us to our accommodation. There we met some of the Australian rural medical students. They had just started their mid year break but were still happy to take us out for dinner and show us around the town. The next day we started at the hospital. Kalgoorlie Hospital has an incredibly large catchment area, with some patients having travelled over 900km to attend clinics. While in Kalgoorlie I was on the Paediatric and General Medicine teams. I found the medicine there to be really interesting. There were many indigenous Australian patients, as well as a surprisingly large amount of New Zealanders (who move to Kalgoorlie to work in the mines).

  • Tidal Wave of Construction and 1300 Jobs Heading for South Australia
Tidal wave of construction and 1300 jobs heading for South Australia 11/10/2020 | Corey Wingard MP | More Jobs | Better Services A tidal wave of major construction is heading for South Australia with works starting on more than $1 billion worth of infrastructure projects within the next six months. The building boom kicks off this month and will support more than 1,300 jobs as the Marshall Government continues to build what matters to South Australians. Major construction begins on two of the biggest regional infrastructure projects ever undertaken in this state - the Port Wakeeld Overpass and Highway Duplication and the Joy Baluch AM Bridge Duplication Project. Showcasing a commitment to improving regional roads, next month shoulder sealing works will also begin on the Tod and Birdseye Highways. In metropolitan Adelaide, major construction works will start by the end of the year on the much anticipated upgrade of the intersection of Goodwood, Springbank and Daws Roads, as well as the Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads Intersection Upgrade. Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said these important projects will support our economy and deliver jobs at a time when our state needs it most will support our economy and deliver jobs at a time when our state needs it most. “The economic challenges our state is facing at the moment are unprecedented,” Minister Wingard said. “Getting major works started on infrastructure projects across South Australia will help keep the economy ring as we navigate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic. “Creating jobs is critical to our economic recovery and we’re delivering around 1,315 over the next six months in road infrastructure projects alone.

  • Western Australia – Permits and Permissions Required to Access Indigenous and Other Lands, Including National Parks
Western Australia – Permits and permissions required to access indigenous and other lands, including national parks General: Quite a number of transit permits for aboriginal lands in WA are able to be issued by the Aboriginal Lands Trust of WA. (N.B.: The Aboriginal Lands Trust has no involvement whatever in the issuing of permits for the Canning Stock Route – for Canning information and Permits see below under the heading of Canning Stock Route). The Trust is a part of the Department of Indigenous Affairs. Applications can be made on-line at www.dia.wa.gov.au and simply follow the prompts. The web site contains a lot of excellent information including maps showing the specific areas and tracks where Permits are required and whether the Trust or a Land Council issues them. The conditions under which permits can be gained via an automated on-line process are also explained. Once you log on to the web site, click on the “Entering Aboriginal Land” button on the left side of the Home Page and read all of the information under the nominated four (4) headings BEFORE applying on-line. The maps showing the tracks and whether DIA or a Land Council, etc., issues them can be found under the “Travel Information” heading. About half way down that page is a map of WA showing the Land Council areas; simply click on the area you want to visit. The Trust can be contacted at: The Permits Officer, Aboriginal Lands Trust, PO Box 7770, Cloisters Square, Perth, WA 6850. Telephone (08) 9235 8000 or Fax (08) 9235 8088.
