Nathans Department of Theatre In the fall of 1947, the Theatre Guild, arguably the theatrical producing organization that had defined the American theatre aesthetic since its inception in 1918, splashed confidently and unhesitatingly into the barely-charted waters of the nascent medium of live television. The attempt seemed destined for success since the Guild had been producing a successful radio program for two years and was paired with NBC, the most successful of the early television networks. However, fourteen months later the Guild retired from television. It had failed in its ambitious plan to bring the sights, sounds of Broadway to every living room from coast to coast. I argue that the principal reason for its failure was artistic rather than commercial and that by 1948 the Guild’s various broadcasting ventures illustrate that the Theatre Guild, which had once defined itself as farsighted and experimental had in reality become nearsighted and stodgy. This dissertation explores the background of the Theatre Guild before it entered broadcasting, during the time it was developing its position as Broadway’s leading exponent of artistic plays and experimental theatre. It continues the story through the Guild’s production of The Theatre Guild on the Air, a weekly series of hour-long adaptations of stage plays that it began producing in 1945, and on to the Guild’s abortive first attempt at live television from 1947-1948. Finally, it documents the Guild’s efforts to return to television, which it ultimately did in 1953, although with a different purpose in mind and with a much more successful approach. Situation, But We Will Work Another Out” – The Theatre Guild in Limbo…………………………………………….….222 Epilogue: “… the new program seems certain to be one of the year’s major treats”– The United States Steel Hour……………………………………………….262 Conclusion………………………………………………………………….…………..268 Bibliography………………………………………………………………...………….271 iii Introduction In October 1947, Variety announced that the upcoming television premiere of a partnership between Broadway’s Theatre Guild and television’s National Broadcasting Company would be “the biggest thing that’s happened on video since the World Series.”1 Radio Daily hailed the collaboration as the first major “tie-in between TV and the legitimate theatre.”2 Observers of the fledgling medium of television anticipated the possibility of being able to watch a Broadway production from the comfort of one’s living room.3 However, after a rocky first production, the television series lasted only eight months and broadcast seven plays. By December 1948, the collaboration had dissolved.4 The combination of a Broadway producer and a broadcasting network would seem to be a natural merging of organizations. By the fall of 1947, the Theatre Guild had earned a reputation as arguably Broadway’s most distinguished producer with a history spanning nearly thirty years. For notice of the dissolution, see Television Digest and FM Reports, 11 December 1948, 4. 1 the largest linked network of affiliate stations in the United States.5 Moreover, the Theatre Guild came into the venture with broadcasting experience of its own. Since September 1945, the Guild had been producing a weekly hour-long radio drama with moderate commercial and critical success.6 Yet the combined talents of these two entertainment heavyweights could not produce a successful blending of theatre and television. The promise of what might have been has since faded and exists as an obscure footnote in the histories of both television and theatre. I first encountered the Theatre Guild’s initial television venture nearly thirty years ago while researching early live television drama.7 What struck me as curious was that although the print media in 1947 hailed the program as a revolutionary development in television, in the early 1980s none of the standard works on television history mentioned it.8 Later while investigating the program in its relation to theatre history, I discovered 5 See Walter Pritchard Eaton, The Theatre Guild: The First Ten Years with Articles by The Directors (Freeport, NY: Books for Libraries Press, 1929) for information on the Guild. The groundbreaking work, Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh, The Complete Directory of Prime Time Network TV Shows 1946-Present, 1st ed. (New York: 2 the same lack of attention to not only the Guild’s work in television and radio, but an overall disinterest in the interaction between the New York theatrical community and radio and television in the 1930s and 1940s. However, my research brought to light a multitude of artistic and creative links the legitimate theatre in New York had with both radio and television. Even so, most comprehensive theatre histories either overlook these connections entirely, or refer to them only in the context of a competition for prospective audience members.9 It occurred to me that the Theatre Guild’s experience could become a lens through which one could explore the contribution of theatre to what became the dominant form of entertainment in the latter half of the twentieth century. Gillis, a longtime associate of Arturo Toscanini, served as the conductor’s assistant and the producer for the NBC Symphony broadcast concerts from 1944 until they ended ten years later. Having spent the first several years of his professional life in T the opera pit, Toscanini then gained a reputation for his symphonic conducting, serving as principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1929 to 1936. When he left that post and retired to his native Italy, his American fans believed they would never again see the maestro conduct here. At the age of 70, however, when most individuals are happily settled into retirement, Toscanini returned to the podium, this time in a completely new and, in some ways controversial, forum, as head of the recently organized NBC Symphony. He would remain with the orchestra until his final departure in 1954. Toscanini died three years later in New York, just two months before his ninetieth birthday.

Built 1924-25; architects, Crane & Franzheim. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1024, Lot 7. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the ANTA Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The ANTA Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

Written by Martin Grams, Jr. The trial-and-error system being an old if frequently painful institution in the show business (else all stage plays would be hits, and all radio programs would have an Amos and Andy average in the Crossley ratings), the Columbia Broadcasting System’s Forecast series shrewdly dramatized the fact that there is no such phenomenon as a sure thing. For two particular seasons, the CBS people enlivened summer’s somewhat lethargic air waves with a schedule of experimental entertainments which, to tell the truth, aren’t experimental in the exact sense of the word, but have nevertheless a refreshing air about them, if only for the ideas they represented. The idea is that neither CBS nor anyone else knew, until they were produced, whether the programs were any good or not, though they were of course, hoping for the best. And, very sensibly, they made a game of it. Whereas the listener during the busy season was told to take what he got and, if possible, like it, Forecast invited criticism. Listening to the various episodes, one could not help but applaud for Marlene Dietrich in "The Thousand and One Nights," and convulsed with laughter as they listened to the amorous antics of "Mischa the Magnificent." (Mischa Auer, that is.) Whatever it was that made people bet on horse races or write letters to the editor, they could file an honest opinion about the programs and then sat back to await the verdict.

Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

The daughter of Herman Luyties Kuhns (b. 1855) and Dora Virginia Hartzell, Dorothy Hartzell Kuhns was born in Wooster, Ohio. Dorothy studied playwrighting at Harvard University, and as a fellow of George Pierce Baker's Workshop 47 she spent a summer's residency at the MacDowell Colony, an artists' retreat in New Hampshire, where she met South Carolina author DuBose Heyward (1885-1940). They married in September 1923. Their only child was Jenifer DuBose Heyward (later Mrs. Jenifer Wood, 1930-1984), who became a ballet dancer and made her home in New York, N.Y. Dorothy collaborated with her husband to produce a dramatic version of his novel "Porgy." The play became the libretto for the opera "Porgy & Bess" (first produced in 1935) by DuBose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin. She also collaborated with her husband to produce "Mamba's Daughters," a play based on DuBose Heyward's novel by the same name. In 1940 Dorothy Heyward succeeded her late husband as the resident dramatist at the Dock Street Theater (Charleston, S.C.). In the years following his death she continued to write and published a number of works including the plays "South Pacific" (1943) and "Set My People Free" (1948, the story of the Denmark Vesey slave insurrection), as well as the libretto for the children's opera "Babar the Elephant" (1953). Earlier works by Dorothy Heyward include the plays "Love in a Cupboard" (1925), "Jonica" (1930), and "Cinderelative" (1930, in collaboration with Dorothy DeJagers), and the novels "Three-a-Day" (1930) and "The Pulitzer Prize Murders" (1932).

This compilation gives us the clearest and most concise guide yet to the production and technical operations of television’s early days and the network that pioneered so much of the new medium. As you will see, many shows were done as “remotes” in NBC radio studios with in-house mobile camera units, and predate the official conversion date which signifies the studio now has its own control room and stage lighting.
