BONVILLIAN (1948 –2018) John Bonvillian was one of the early pioneers in the acquisition of signs by children with disabilities, beginning in the early 1970s, laying the groundwork for many future studies. He was one of the first people we approached to contribute a chapter about sign with children on the autism spectrum. At the time (2016), he was very busy as an emeritus faculty member in the Department of Psychology and the Program in Linguistics at the University of Virginia and a fellow of both the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association. He was also preparing his own manuscript on Simplified Signs. However, he kindly agreed to take part, and it was whilst he was writing for us that he was diagnosed with the illness that was to prove terminal. Typically, he was the first author to complete and submit his chapter. We are saddened by his passing, but we celebrate the inspiration he offered to generations of students and researchers. We are delighted to dedicate this book to the memory of a visionary academic, who valued both signing, and the lives of children with developmental disabilities.     Communication rarechromo.org Communication guide Communication isn’t just about speech. We communicate in lots of different ways. Speech, signing, pointing, eye contact, body movements, expressions etc. It can and is used by everyone, every day. This guide was written to help parents whose child has a rare chromosome or gene disorder, and includes ideas to help them to teach communication skills and to learn how to communicate with their child who has a developmental delay. Speech is a skill that children begin to develop as babies. Infants start by communicating through crying, then they move onto develop babbling speech which contains no real words. This can carry on for some time. For most children, their first words are made up of simple vowel sounds like ‘da da’, ‘ma ma’ or ‘ba ba’. Gradually children begin to use these sounds to form language but this can come at very different ages. As children begin to develop more complicated language, they produce longer words and can string words together to form a sentence. By the time they start school; most children have speech that is easily understood. However, some children take longer to develop their speech to a level where everything they say can be understood. Some children do not learn to speak at all and have to find other methods of communicating their wants and needs. If your child has a Speech – the oral sounds that are made developmental delay, speech Language - the use of words or gestures will often also be delayed, or Receptive skills - understanding language not develop at all.

    SIGNALONG in Swindon What is Signalong? It encourages Total Communication. This means using a combination of speech, facial expression, body language, tone of voice and sign to communicate our message. It is based on BSL (British Sign Language) but only key words are signed. Key words are the important words that you want to emphasise in a sentence / phrase, for example: the dog is eating the biscuit. It is sign supported communication. You always sign AND say the word. This means that it will encourage language development, not hinder it, in any way. It’s similar to Makaton and Mr Tumble’s signs, but in Swindon we chose to use one system across all settings …that choice was Signalong. Signs are introduced in everyday, real-life situations using objects or pictures. For example, every time you give your child a cup, you would say the word “cup”, and use the sign alongside this. Why sign with my child? There is no evidence that signing holds back speech and language. Signing can help reduce frustration. It gives your child a way of getting their message across. develop a child’s understanding of words Signing helps to . Spoken words are fleeting and quickly gone. This can make them hard to learn. The combination of seeing a sign and making a sign can help children to remember new words. Signing will help to gain your child’s attention as they will look at the actions that you make.     Deaf Blindness I see with my hands and I hear with my body. I feel what you see and I hear through vibrations. -Anonymous What is Deaf-blindness? Deaf-blindess is legally defined as "[having] concomitant hearing and visual impairments, the combination of which causes such severe communication and other developmental and educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for children with deafness or children with blindness" (IDEA §300.8 ?[c][2]). A person who is deaf-blind is not necessarily completely deaf and/or blind; rather, the degrees to which deaf-blindness and its combination in individuals vary (deafblindinfo. org). While some may be completely deaf and blind, it is more common for individuals to have some degree of residual vision and/or hearing. The condition of deaf-blindness may occur at any stage in life: some may be born deaf and become blind later on in life; others may be born blind and become deaf later; still others might experience a residual loss of both vision and hearing (AADB). Additionally, some deaf-blind individuals may carry additional physical or cognitive disabilities, though this isn't necessarily a given. Depending on the degree of blindness, deaf-blind persons may utilize sign language or tactile sign language for communication; likewise, if there is some degree of hearing, individuals may choose to utilize spoken language for communication . What Causes Deaf-blindness? There are various ways that people become deaf-blind. Some ways include birth trauma, optic nerve atrophy, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy. Some may become deaf and blind through birth trauma.

[email protected] Abstract: The strong predominance of right-handedness appears to be a uniquely human characteristic, whereas the left-cerebral dom- inance for vocalization occurs in many species, including frogs, birds, and mammals. Right-handedness may have arisen because of an association between manual gestures and vocalization in the evolution of language. I argue that language evolved from manual gestures, gradually incorporating vocal elements. The transition may be traced through changes in the function of Broca’s area. Its homologue in monkeys has nothing to do with vocal control, but contains the so-called “mirror neurons,” the code for both the production of manual reaching movements and the perception of the same movements performed by others. This system is bilateral in monkeys, but pre- dominantly left-hemispheric in humans, and in humans is involved with vocalization as well as manual actions. There is evidence that Broca’s area is enlarged on the left side in Homo habilis, suggesting that a link between gesture and vocalization may go back at least two million years, although other evidence suggests that speech may not have become fully autonomous until Homo sapiens appeared some 170,000 years ago, or perhaps even later. The removal of manual gesture as a necessary component of language may explain the rapid advance of technology, allowing late migrations of Homo sapiens from Africa to replace all other hominids in other parts of the world, including the Neanderthals in Europe and Homo erectus in Asia.
