This absolute catastrophe in the Gulf makes me sick just seeing and hearing about it; the massive scale of l devastation to living creatures, the inconceivable wreckage of coastlines from not only the oil, but from the millions of gallons of chemical dispersants, the decimation of the fishing and tourist industries, lifestyles of good, decent folks ruined. Some of them are people I know. It’s just frustrating because there’s little any of us can do to stop the oil, and the people responsible are unfortunately the most qualified and able to fix the problem. Once again, we’ve trusted the industry to police itself, believing it will act wisely in its own best interests and do the right thing. Once again, we learn the hard way that business often skips the “do the right thing” and “wisely” parts of the previous sentence to help boost the “best interests” part. When will we ever learn? One good thing to come out of this is the increased awareness of our addiction to fossil fuels, and the danger of it. But another one—which may be even more important—is the awareness of the importance of our waters, fresh and salt. Very often it seems we are being given a choice: cheap(er) energy or fresh (unpolluted) water. Both hydrofracturing to capture natural gas, and mountaintop removal to get coal, despoil enormous amounts of fresh water, never to be reclaimed. Is it really worth it? I’ve got water on the brain, that’s for sure, and it’s become a big part of this month’s issue. Our featured artist Christy Rupp has much to say on the subject, and she does so with verve, eloquence, and some arresting imagery. We had a great chat with Manna Jo Greene and Jeff Rumpf of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, who gave us the rundown on what’s going on with their ongoing mission, to create more awareness about the importance of our living waterways. And the absolute highlight: meeting the indomitable Pete Seeger. It was a lot like meeting a beloved family patriarch who happens to be a folk hero. It meant the world to me and my son, Dylan, to spend some time talking with him, and he just could not have been more gracious to us. RENOVATIONS, Since then, I think of Pete when I get upset about this whole oil spill, and it helps. Pete and his Clearwater crew saw the pollution of the Hudson ADDITIONS, River in the 60s, and saw that the way to effect change would be on a AND HISTORIC personal level, using the power of music, education, and the river itself RESTORATIONS to make people FEEL the importance of saving the Hudson, not just for since 1987 people to use and enjoy, but to provide a home for millions of creatures who inarguably deserve one. • Press Quotes
PRESS QUOTES ASSOCIATED PRESS: Wise words pour forth from Chris Smither – observations and aphorisms, similes and internal rhymes, run-on sentences and concise quips, all in a conversational flow. The careful construction of Smither’s lyrics is a thing of beauty and the bedrock of his bluesy folk music. Smither is an excellent acoustic guitarist and first-rate foot-stomper. NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: [Smither] taps his foot to keep the rhythm, much like the late blues legend John Lee Hooker. His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent. And then there's the voice – equal parts gravel and molasses. (I edited a little out) ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither's roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin' Hopkins in Smither's weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine. MOJO (5 STARS): Hundred Dollar Valentine is a thing of profound beauty; deep, sad, wise songs, allied to perfectly crafted arrangements, from a a man who’s live long enough in darkness to address the big, heavy questions with a lightness of touch. OXFORD AMERICAN It was that rhythmic push-and-pull, that New Orleans sensibility that made Smither stand out NEW YORK TIMES: With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate. MAVERICK: Cast your mind back to the first time you heard Hank Williams, Big Bill Broonzy or JJ Cale and remember how good it felt.

But how do I keep a positive outlook on something that has consumed a fair chunk of my life, and continues to take up so much of my time? I believe my brain loves the intersection of art, craft, and technology.

Flav Martin & Jerry Marotta Soul Redemption 2018 Album Review by Malcolm Moore www.malcolmmooremusic.com “To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest. To live fully is to be always in no-man's-land, to experience each moment as completely new and fresh. To live is to be willing to die over and over again. ” ― Pema Chödrön Soul Redemption by Flav Martin & Jerry Marotta is a beautiful collection of songs that take the listener on a secret journey of the soul. Martin composed most of these songs in a friendly and personal way (English AND Spanish!) that makes it seem like he’s talking directly to you. In addition to that, the album features his gorgeous guitar work that ranges all over the spectrum; everything from pop rock to flamenco! The sonic architect on this glorious effort is none other than famous drummer icon, Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Sarah McLachlan). Marotta’s production values are impeccable, as usual, and the team of A-list players he selected are spectacular. The band includes Tony Levin (King Crimson, Paul Simon, John Lennon) on bass, Peter Primamore (film/TV composer) on piano, and Mark Schulman (Chris Botti, Suzanne Vega) on guitar. The album was recorded at the illustrious Dreamland Recording Studios in West Hurley, New York. Tracks: 1. Soul Redemption- Radiant opening song that features a trio of diverse and textural guitars, including; Flav Martin, Mark Schulman, and Thor Jensen (SWB). Lyrically inviting and mysterious, this song welcomes the listener by floating in the door like a feather.
