Doran A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Megan Rancier © 2012 Molly Doran All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Since receiving its first performance in 1879, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s fifth opera, Eugene Onegin (1877-1878), has garnered much attention from both music scholars and prominent figures in Russian literature. Despite its largely enthusiastic reception in musical circles, it almost immediately became the target of negative criticism by Russian authors who viewed the opera as a trivial and overly romanticized embarrassment to Pushkin’s novel. Criticism of the opera often revolves around the fact that the novel’s most significant feature—its self-conscious narrator—does not exist in the opera, thus completely changing one of the story’s defining attributes. Scholarship in defense of the opera began to appear in abundance during the 1990s with the work of Alexander Poznansky, Caryl Emerson, Byron Nelson, and Richard Taruskin. These authors have all sought to demonstrate that the opera stands as more than a work of overly personalized emotionalism. In my thesis I review the relationship between the novel and the opera in greater depth by explaining what distinguishes the two works from each other, but also by looking further into the argument that Tchaikovsky’s music represents the novel well by cleverly incorporating ironic elements as a means of capturing the literary narrator’s sardonic voice.

    Insufficient Concern: A Unified Conception of Criminal Culpability Larry Alexandert INTRODUCTION Most criminal law theorists and the criminal codes on which they comment posit four distinct forms of criminal culpability: purpose, knowl- edge, recklessness, and negligence. Negligence as a form of criminal cul- pability is somewhat controversial,' but the other three are not. What controversy there is concerns how the lines between them should be drawn3 and whether there should be additional forms of criminal culpabil- ity besides these four.' My purpose in this Essay is to make the case for fewer, not more, forms of criminal culpability. Indeed, I shall try to demonstrate that pur- pose and knowledge can be reduced to recklessness because, like reckless- ness, they exhibit the basic moral vice of insufficient concern for the interests of others. I shall also argue that additional forms of criminal cul- pability are either unnecessary, because they too can be subsumed within recklessness as insufficient concern, or undesirable, because they punish a character trait or disposition rather than an occurrent mental state.     Music to My Ears: A Structural Approach to Teaching the Soundtrack Kathryn Kalinak Introduction and Rationale In one of the first film classes I ever took, the professor described the aim of the course as visual indoctrination: to loose the innocence of the untrained eye. Looking back on my own experi­ ence as a professor of film studies, I have come to realize how apt his characterization remains today. Beginning film students quickly learn the vocabulary to describe a film's image track. Mise-en-scene, camera position and movement, focal distance, and editing are common currency in the textbooks and courses which introduce film as an art form in colleges and universities across the country. Within the last decade there has been a noticeable effort to regard the soundtrack with the same attention: increased scholarship in the area, especially in terms of theory, and more and better chapters on the soundtrack in film textbooks. As a result, film students are growing more comfortable with the concepts and language necessary to describe the ways in which sound can be constructed.     Please read this before using this recommended guide! The following pages are being uploaded to the OSSAA webpage STRICTLY AS A GUIDE TO SOLO AND ENSEMBLE LITERATURE. In 1999 there was a desire to have a required list of solo and ensemble literature, similar to the PML that large groups are required to perform. Many hours were spent creating the following document to provide “graded lists” of literature for every instrument and voice part. The theory was a student who made a superior rating on a solo would be required to move up the list the next year, to a more challenging solo. After 2 years of debating the issue, the music advisory committee voted NOT to continue with the solo/ensemble required list because there was simply too much music written to confine a person to perform from such a limited list. In 2001 the music advisor committee voted NOT to proceed with the required list, but rather use it as “Recommended Literature” for each instrument or voice part. Any reference to “required lists” or “no exceptions” in this document need to be ignored, as it has not been updated since 2001. If you have any questions as to the rules and regulations governing solo and ensemble events, please refer back to the OSSAA Rules and Regulation Manual for the current year, or contact the music administrator at the OSSAA. 105 SOLO ENSEMBLE REGULATIONS 1. Februar geplante Veröffentlichung eines neuen Boxsets mit 13 CDs an. “Delectus” enthält eine Auswahl seiner frühen Alben. In der gigantischen Collection befinden sich alle bei Vertigo und Polydor erschienen Alben – hier zum ersten Mal unter den aufmerksamen Augen des legendären Komponisten neu gemastert. Die CDs befinden sich in zwei gestanzten, aufklappbaren Haltern in einem quadratischen, stabilen Slipcase mit 242mm Seitenlänge. Diese wiederum werden zusammen mit einem 64-seitigen Buch über diesen speziellen Zeitabschnitt in der produktiven Karriere des legendären Künstlers in einer aufwendigen Box mit einem Essay und einer Reihe seltener Fotos aufbewahrt. “Ich freue mich immer, meine Alben zu remastern und zwar aus zwei Gründen”, erklärt Vangelis. “Erstens gibt es mir eine Gelegenheit, den Sound den heutigen Standards anzupassen und zweitens kann ich mich noch einmal mit meinen Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen aus der jeweiligen Zeit auseinandersetzen.” “Delectus” beinhaltet die bahnbrechenden Werke “Earth”, “L’Apocalypse Des Animaux”, “China”, “See You Later”, “Antarctica”, “Mask”, “Opera Sauvage”,“Chariots of Fire”, “Soil Festivities” und “Invisible Connections”, sowie die in Kollaboration mit Jon Anderson als ‘Jon & Vangelis’ entstandenen Alben “Short Stories”, “The Friends of Mister Cairo” & “Private Collection”.
