oreign Legion officer, Galoup, recalls his once glorious life, leading troops in the Gulf of Djibouti. His existence there was happy, strict and regimented, but the arrival of a promising young recruit, Sentain, plants the seeds Fof jealousy in Galoup’s mind. He feels compelled to stop him from coming to the attention of the commandant who he admires, but who ignores him. Ultimately, his jealousy leads to the destruction of both Sentain and himself. Recently IndieWire named BEAU TRAVAIL #2 on the list of The 100 All-Time Greatest Directed by Women.

The focus of this year’s retrospective, Claire Denis is a French director and writer, best known for 35 SHOTS OF RUM (2008), BEAU TRAVAIL (1999) and the 2019 CUFF selection HIGH LIFE.

What Ms. Denis has made...is the visually spellbinding cinematic equivalent of a military ballet in which the legionnaires’ rigorous drills and training rituals are depicted as ecstatic rites of purification, the embodiment of an impenetrable masculine mystique before which the director stands in awe...Ms. Denis is in search of something deeper, more elemental and ultimately more elusive.

stranged from his cancer-stricken mother, Stan, a quixotic 19-year-old, dons a disguise and joins a therapy workshop for disfigured patients in a misguided attempt to reconnect with her. When Stan is exposed as an E impostor, he strikes a deal with the workshop facilitator: in exchange for staying in the group, he’ll train them how to use their physical differences as a weapon against our beauty-obsessed culture. Directed and co-written by Alexandre Franchi (CUFF 2010 Best Narrative Feature Winner THE WILD HUNT), the film is based on autobiographical events as Alexandre grew up witnessing his single mother’s struggle with cancer. The other characters are all played by real people with facial differences playing a fictionalized version of themselves. Set in 1990s Montreal, HAPPY FACE is part autobiographical coming-of-age story, part Dungeons & Dragons fuelled fable, and part antitode to the Tyranny of Beauty.

Director Alexandre Franchi successfully shows the experiences of these marginalized individuals. FILM THREAT

ecky Something (Elisabeth Moss) is a ‘90s punk rock superstar who once filled arenas with her grungy all- female trio Something She. Now she plays smaller venues while grappling with motherhood, exhausted band B mates, nervous record company executives, and a new generation of rising talent eager to usurp her stardom. When Becky’s chaos and excesses derail a recording session and national tour, she finds herself shunned, isolated and alone. Forced to get sober, temper her demons, and reckon with the past, she retreats from the spotlight and tries to recapture the creative inspiration that led her band to success. Anchored by a towering, unflinching performance from Golden Globe and Emmy winner Moss, and supported by a stellar ensemble cast, HER SMELL examines the grit, grace and gravitas of an unforgettable fictional rock star crashing down to earth into the harsh realities of mid-life. With his incendiary and deeply humane sixth feature, writer-director Alex Ross Perry (LISTEN UP PHILLIP, QUEEN OF THE EARTH, and the CUFF 2012 selection ) pumps up the volume and shines a light on the terrifying moment when superstardom wanes —and quiet becomes the new loud.

haunting ghost story set against the backdrop of a busy winter sales period in a department store, IN FABRIC follows the life of a cursed dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences. Part A nightmare, part couture, acclaimed director Peter Strickland (2015 CUFF selection THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY, 2013 CUFF selection BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO) executes his signature style of dry humour, eroticism and an element of the surreal.

A raucous, full-tilt descent into bishop-sleeved madness. LITTLE WHITE LIES The source may be different for everyone, but the thrill is always the same. IN FABRIC doesn’t know what you want, but Peter Strickland is certain that it will drive you wild. INDIEWIRE

aris, Summer 1979. Anne produces third-rate gay porn. After her editor and lover Lois leaves her, she tries to win her back by shooting her most ambitious film yet with her trusted, flaming sidekick Archibald. But one of her Pactors is brutally murdered and Anne gets caught up in a strange investigation that turns her life upside-down. In Yann Gonzalez’s second feature, a masked serial killer stalks a producer and her film company in this love letter to European , American cinema, and ‘70s gay porn.

ome for the holidays with nothing to do, two old high school friends get in over their heads when they try to solve the kidnapping of a Washington D.C. socialite. What starts as a night of debauchery evolves into a Hself-indulgent quest when the two become convinced that they are the only ones who can solve the case. LOST HOLIDAY is a dark comedy that follows a New York social worker who finds herself embroiled in a noirish tale of kidnapping, drugs and murder on the outskirts of America’s capital. But something happened to her inside the circuitry: she developed a taste for human souls and turned to the dark side. Some years later, Howard North, a scruffy down-on-his-luck sewerage-waste worker, mysteriously orphaned while still a baby, learns that he is the only one with the ability to stop a demonic corporate billionaire’s plot to devour the souls of a million human beings. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the corporate billionaire is Finnegan, who also happens to be his mother. Now, with the help of Molly and Torquel (sisters – and Nekromancers) he must learn to harness his newfound powers, train to destroy online demons, deal with his stoner friend Rangi’s death (and resurrection as a sarcastic ghost), and somehow find time to save the world – all while dodging bullets, wraiths, exploding goats, plasma-lightning and his megalomaniacal, demonic mother who is trying to eat his immortal soul.

HO LET THE DOGS OUT is a song that has transcended generations, and has led Ben Sisto to dedicate eight years exploring and exposing a story steeped in show business, legal battles, female empowerment, Wartistic integrity and one very catchy hook. This documentary follows Sisto on his popular live talks across the world that explain the story of “Who Let The Dogs Out” accompanied by a museum of over 250 pieces of ephemera relating to the song and its origins. Sisto’s thesis to his life’s work: the idea that everything is based on prior art, and everything is source material for future art. It’s from this mantra that the dogs were let out…and we are here to explore who did it.
