I Believe, I Achieve is a highly effective school-based mentoring program run by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of Westchester. This innovative program has had a positive impact on the lives of many students at Scholastic Academy. This program has provided our mentees with life skills that have allowed them to become high achievers, wise decision-makers, and responsible leaders. A big part of the success of the program has been its holistic premise that parents, teachers, and mentors can work collaboratively to provide students with the guidance and support they need to succeed. Children need caring and responsi - ble individuals in their lives and mentoring is a way to fill this need for many students. According to Redd, Brooks, and McGarvey (2002), “high-quality early childhood programs, mentoring programs, and pro - grams aimed at boosting academic outcomes can positively influence a number of factors related to teens’ social and psychological adjustment to school, as well as their achievement in school.” The mentors and facilitators involved with I Believe, I Achieve are dedicated, intelligent and compassionate and the bonds they form with the mentees is the key that offers our children a better future.

I would like to extend my gratitude to Ms. Marsha Tom, Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Lanza Family Foundation and the Vera and Walter Scherr Foundation for all they have done to make sure I Believe, I Achieve succeeds and for their dedication and devotion to the children at Scholastic Academy. With a shared mission and vision, we will work together to make sure our children achieve their life- long goals and reach their full potential.

With great appreciation, Taren Washington Taren Washington Principal, Scholastic Academy

- 4 - All about the I Believe, I Achieve Mentoring Program By Colleen Davis Gardephe and Kylee Harris

The I Believe, I Achieve mentoring program has had a highly successful second year, thanks to the grants and support from the Vera and Walter Scherr Family Foundation and the Lanza Family Foundation. The mentoring program run by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of Westchester is a unique collaboration of parents, students and mentors from Mercy and Manhattanville Colleges. The goals of the program focus on enhancing the academic performance of the students, helping them develop positive self-esteem, and motivating them to do their best in the classroom and throughout life. Both the parents and the students in the program are held accountable for their progress. Parents attend engaging workshops, participate in educational field trips and encourage their child’s participation in the program. Students are asked to sustain good school attendance, improve their grades, read books on their own, work toward staying fit and perform community service. Mentors meet with the mentees once a week for 90 minutes, reinforcing the lessons they are learning in school, helping them with homework and becoming a caring adult in their mentee’s life. Twice a week, the students receive after-school instruction in writing, science, the arts and dance. One of the highlights of this past year took place at the Ice Cream Social in September, when the students almost fainted once they heard they were all getting laptops. All year long, they have used their new laptops to conduct research, write papers, create PowerPoint presentations and learn about graphic design. This year’s field trips were also remarkable, with several trips to Broadway to see Lion King, Spider-Man and Mary Poppins, visits to educational sites like the Maritime Aquarium, the New York Hall of Science, and the SONY Wonder Lab, along with fun excursions to New Roc City, CitiField, Sports Time USA and Homefield Bowling. The students also had the opportunity to go fishing, learn marital arts, dance and build robots this year. They also learned about the value of helping others by volunteering at FSW’s Sharing Shelf, which distributes gently used clothing to families in need. All in all it has been a spectacular year of learning, motivation, and fun. We are so excited about the beginning of year three of the I Believe, I Achieve program.

- 7 - Ask Double Trouble!

By Saira Naj and Angelica Nuñez

All kids and even many adults have concerns about making friends, getting their work done and being their best. In this Advice column, Saira and Angelica, the oldest members of the program, respond to questions posed by other I Believe, I Achieve participants.

Q: How do I avoid forgetting my homework? A: You get a little notebook with dates in it at school. You can write down your homework assignments each day. If you forget something, call a friend.

Q: What’s the best way to make new friends outside of school? A: The best thing is to be friendly. Try not to be uptight. Mingle with people you don’t know. But don’t talk to total strangers.

Q: How can I be a responsible teenager at home and at school? A: At home, listen to your parents even though you don’t always want to do that. At school do your work and try not to play around. There is a time during the day and week for playing around – during recess and lunch, after school and on the weekends – so when you are in class, focus on the lesson and your homework assignment.

Q: What is the best way to survive middle school? A: AVOID CONFLICT! Don’t judge the book by its cover goes the expression so stay open to new people. Try to make friends with a variety of people but don’t hang out with people who you know would be trouble. Do your work! School is not about talking to your friends although you should make friends. You’re there to learn and become smarter than you already are!

Q: How do you avoid drama with the girls? A: AVOID GOSSIP!! Do not start problems with others. Avoid judgmental people. Stay away from the ones who talk a lot but can’t back it up.

Q: How do you keep from being in trouble with your parents? A: The best thing to do is listen to them. If they are giving you a lecture or yelling at you, stay shut! Listen to what they say, even if you don’t always agree with them. Remember that they want what’s best for you!

- 8 - Adele Gives Me Goosebumps

By Diana Marji

Many people all over the world say that Adele has an amazing voice. I agree with them.

Adele was born on May 5, 1988. Many people wonder why Adele names her albums random numbers. The names of her albums “19” and “21” aren’t random numbers after all. The numbers represent the ages that she was when she wrote the material for her first two albums. Many people wonder why Adele missed her tour in 2008. You really can’t blame Adele because she wanted to be with a former boyfriend. She couldn’t bear to be without him. When Adele was growing up, she was a fan of the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls were a major influence on her regarding her love and passion for music. Adele likes to impersonate the Spice Girls. The thing that I love about Adele is her amazing voice and that she is so kind. She has given $12,000 to keep a child alive. The child wasn’t doing that well and the family couldn’t afford medical treatment for the child so Adele was kind enough to donate the $12,000 needed. Adele’s amazing song “Rolling in the Deep” got her eight Grammy Awards in total. She had received two Grammys for her album “19” and six Grammys for her new album “21.” Her songs win so many Grammy Awards because she writes about how she feels in her songs. Adele became so popular because her friend posted a video on MySpace in 2006. She had an opportunity to record a demo and she did it. In 2007, Adele won the Brit Awards. In 2008, Adele won the “Critic’s Choice Award.” Her album “19” was released in 2008. Her album went platinum in the UK. At the 2009 Grammys, Adele received the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performances. Adele released her second album “21” in early 2011. “21” helped Adele earn six Grammy Awards. Her album “21” has been certified Platinum 16 times in the UK. Her album “21” has been so popular all over the world because of her amazing songs. Adele gives me goosebumps because her music just speaks to me and her music is amazing. I hope Adele continues to make more of her amazing music!!!!!!!!!!!

- 9 - Vanilla Twilight By Amber Cuevas “It takes two to whisper quietly…”

What does Vanilla Twilight really mean to ? Vanilla Twilight was one of Owl City’s (Adam Young) very first songs, so it is one of the oldest on his albums. This song is a heartwarming tale of how it can sometimes be hard to let go of the ones you love. But, what does it really mean? Well, there are a few things about the video too... some confusing things.

After doing some research on the song and its reach / Back through the past / I’d whisper in your popularity, I found out this was not only a love ear / oh darling, I wish you were here.” song. Adam made this song based on a certain girl in his life. When Adam was in high school, he was Now moving on to the video. In the video there are in a relationship with his longtime girlfriend. But he some confusing parts that I may be able to found out that she had to move away. Since he decipher. One thing is the reason why the people didn’t want to let her go, he includes the lyrics “I in the video change their moods. This happens swear I won’t forget you / oh, if my voice could when they look up into the vortex in the sky. At first their moods seemed gloomy and sad. The reason I think this is happening is because, when they look at the sky the vortex means something like, there is hope after all. Like for the homeless man who drops his cup of pennies on the floor. But maybe their reactions have some connection with the song’s meaning. But one question still remains… WHY WAS SHAQUILLE O’NEAL THERE!?!

- 17 - Mariah Carey: 200 Million Records Sold and Twins!

By Dwonasia Hadley

Mariah Carey was born March 27, 1970, in Long Island, New York, and began taking voice lessons at age four. At 18 she signed with Columbia Records, and her first album had four number-one sin - gles, including "Vision of Love" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." She went on to produce several more albums (later with other studios) and top singles, and is one of the best-selling female artists of all time.

When she was 18, Carey and her friend, singer Brenda K. Starr, went to a party hosted by CBS Records. Starr convinced Carey to bring along one of her demo tapes. She intended to give the tape to Columbia's Jerry Greenberg, but Tommy Mottola, the president of Columbia Records (later Sony), intercepted it before she could hand it to Greenberg. After listening to the tape on the way home from the party, Mottola signed Carey immediately and set her to work on her first album, Mariah Carey (1990) which included four No. 1 singles: “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Some Day,” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” Her second album Emotions was released in 1992; the title track became her fifth No. 1 single, and included hits “Can’t Let Go” and “Make it Happen.”

“We Belong Together” (2005) and “Touch My Body” (2008) were more recent hits. On April 30, Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon welcomed boy and girl twins!

- 19 - Alvin Clayton Encourages Students to Be Kind & Work Hard

By Colleen Davis Gardephe and Kylee Harris

One of the highlights of our Magazine project was the chance for the I Believe, I Achieve students to interview Alvin Clayton, a restau - rant owner, artist, model, soccer star and devoted father and husband. Alvin is the owner of a highly successful Southern/ Caribbean restaurant in New Rochelle called Alvin and Friends. His paintings have been collected by such A-list movies stars as Denzel Washington and Halle Berry. As a model with the Wilhelmina and Ford agencies, Alvin has been on the cover of New York magazine and has been featured in Esquire, Elle and Vogue as well. Alvin credits his many successes to a combination of luck, optimism, hard work and encouragement from friends, teachers and family members. He told the students that they can achieve anything they put their minds to, but that success doesn’t come magically. Achieving your goals, he said, requires responsibility, diligence and dedication.

IBIA students interviewed restaurant owner and model Alvin Clayton this summer. (left) Artist Alvin Clayton explained the meaning behind two of his paintings when he met with the IBIA students this summer.

- 20 - Q: What are your plans for Alvin and Friends?

A: I am planning to move the restaurant to a bigger location in New Rochelle because we know it’s successful, and we wanted it to continue to grow. I am going to open up a new restaurant, a French bistro, because I lived in Paris for a while and I love French food. The concept that I have is different from other French bistros around. When you open a restaurant, you have to figure out why you want to do that, why your restaurant will be different from others or more special, and why people will visit your restaurant rather than someone else’s.

Q: How did it feel to be on the cover of New York magazine?

A: It’s a nice accomplishment. It’s nice that people are paying attention to what you’ve done and that you are worthy enough to be featured in that way. The way I was raised, though, was that what is on the inside is more important than New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson celebrates the success of Alvin and what’s on the outside. I think that when people take pictures Friends restaurant with Alvin and his wife Gwen of you, what you have inside comes through. A: We opened in October 2010. We have a different restau - rant than the others in downtown New Rochelle. There are mostly Italian or Mexican restaurants, so we have a different product. Another part of helping the restaurant succeed is fig - uring out your client base. I wanted a nice environment be - cause a lot of times when you have Southern food, it’s a Mom-and-Pop type place but that wasn’t the client based I was going for. I wanted the restaurant to be an extension of my home, so I made it very elegant with my paintings around. I also wanted the waiters in the front and the cooks in the back to be acclimated to what we were trying to achieve so when we first opened, I never took more than 25 people a night even though the restaurant seated 50. - 28 - Why SpoBy Nrylaht Zsong o Are Fun

Most sports are fun because they provide entertainment and exercise for people. I like to play football and basketball. Football is fun because I like to catch the ball and tackle people. I also like basketball because it’s a team effort. Two sports you might want to learn about are basketball and running.

Running g Running is a good sport because you can do it on your own and you don’t need any special equipment to run in marathons, although you do have to train first. There are many benefits to running. According to Complete Running blog, people who run 35 g miles per week are less likely to suffer vision loss. Most people who run 10 miles a week do not need cholesterol or blood pressure meds. Running helps your bones, and improves your sleep. In one study, insomniacs fell asleep 17 minutes faster on days they ran.

Basketball I like basketball because I get to play with my friends. The best is when I go to the a park with my friends, we all have a lot of fun together. Basketball started with a game called peach basket. The first game of basketball was played on January 20,1892.

- 29 - Paranormal: A Look Into The Beliefs and Disbeliefs Ghost, Crypts, and more! Some believe. Others don’t.

By Amber Cuevas

Some people find most things easy to believe. I’m not one of those people. But I do believe in the paranormal. When some people hear the word paranormal, they think ghosts. But, there are more things than ghosts that are paranormal. Some people believe in the paranormal, and some don’t. Who’s right?

People sometimes claim to see a ghost or some kind of strange creature without any proof. And others bring proof. Now, if some - one made you spend the night in a place that is said to be haunted, you may or may not be so sure what to expect or how to handle what might happen. If you want to be prepared, I sug - gest bringing the following tools:

• A camera • Ghost hunting kit • Cross • EVP (Electronic voice phenomena) • EMF (Electromagnetic Field Detector) What a believer sees • Walkie Talkies (If you’re with more than one person) • Etc. (I really have no more ideas. Try looking online)

I hope all of that will help you if you are hunting for a ghost, Now, I will move on to the ideas of a non-believer. From what I can tell, non-believers will always look for the logical explanation to the situation. Sometimes they will find the explanation, and sometimes they are stumped. Not everything has to be explain - able, and if everything was, there would be no fun in it. Like, if we knew what Big Foot was exactly, where’s the mystery in it all? And if aliens were easy to explain, there would be no point in Apollo 18. Even though the movie already has no point.Yes, I went there. So, to all you non-believers, listen to Spongebob and use your imagination.

What a non-believer sees

- 30 - LAPTOPS! The Greatest Moment of I Believe, I Achieve By Diana Marji

It was the 2nd Annual Ice Cream Social and this was the second year that we were in I Believe, I Achieve which is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters. We were asked to stand in the front of the room and then people from Best Buy came in with boxes that were wrapped. The BBBS director Ms.Tom announced that we were each going to be receiving a laptop.

Some of us were about to cry and most of us fell to the ground. Saira’s reaction to the laptops was putting her hands on her face and falling on the floor almost about to cry. Angelica’s reaction was falling on the floor in shock. My reaction was falling on the floor in shock. Jonathan’s reaction to the laptops was that he felt amazing. All of us fell to the floor and we were so happy. The big reason that we use our laptops is for school, and we also get to play on them.

“All of us fell to the floor and we were so happy.”

New laptops from Best Buy... Wrapped in blue and green paper with an I Believe, I Achieve seal, the laptops were a big hit!

- 31 - Robotics Lab

By Angelica Nuñez Last year, when there were only a mere 10 students in the I Believe, I Achieve program, we were given the task of creating a real work - ing . The robots had to be able to move around, move objects, and speak. We all had different creations in mind. In order to be able to build these robots, we used a kit called the Lego Mind - Storms NXT 2.0. Everyone was partnered with another student. My partner and I chose to build a Lego puppy. There was a lot of frustration with this project, because if you misplaced ONE piece the whole thing would be messed up, literally. The project took a lot of time, and tried our patience.

You’d expect it to be easy, considering the fact that they’re Lego pieces, but there are mechanical pieces and even wires in that kit. So, that was a whole other level of crazy going on there. The wires and the mechanics were the heart of the robot obviously. So they had to be in the right place the whole time or the entire robot would be unable to work correctly. “The project took a lot of time, and tried our patience.”

The kit comes with different types of sensors and something similar to a mainframe, which is a large rectangular, cube-like structure that has all the in - formation and programming you’ve stored in it. It was easy putting the pieces together after you got the hang of it. It really tests your ability to organize and construct. It also helps you learn programming, which isn’t really as easy as it looks. Overall, despite the frustration and the hard work, robotics is pretty fun. Programming our robot and seeing it work and come to life was the best feeling after all of the hard work. We built two robots, the first one worked well but the Lego Puppy was never finished. The kit comes with six different sensors, the touch sensor, light sensor, color sensor, sound sensor, ultra-sonic sensor, and compass sensor. Each looks different and controls different tasks and uses on the robot. The Ultra-Sonic sensor is considered the robot’s “eyes” so to speak.

- 32 - Spider-man on Broadway Spider-man is back on a whole different web-length

By Amber Cuevas Spider-man was always the world’s favorite bug-type super hero, but no one would ever think of seeing him sing and dance! That’s what you pay for to see a musical. Spider-man is back in a whole new way, but not on the big screen. This time he’s on stage along with the other characters in a musical adventure of how he came to be. If you’re not a fan of Spider-man, you will be after seeing this Broadway show.

This show starts off at Peter Parker’s class when he is read - ing his report on Arachen, the Goddess of the Weavers. Arachen descends on stage and tells her story in song. I am not going to tell the whole story, so you just have to go to the show yourself. This musical tells the story of how Peter Parker changes from a high school nerd, to a super hero. It is filled with comedy and adventure, with a touch of romance and suspense. If you’re not a fan of Spider-man, you will be after seeing this Broadway show.

The show was my first Broadway show and will always be my favorite. I was on the edge on my seat, and on the far back of it trying to catch my breath from laughing. I was amazed by how the characters moved around in the air and on stage. Their voices were perfect together in song and the dances were too good to be easy. And, there were some special animations and effects here and there to add to the allure of the show. In fact, I was so amazed, I almost found myself falling “head over heels” in love with the main char - acter. But a few things snapped me out of it. His age, he has a girlfriend, and the fact that there was more than one of him, many of him, in fact, different actors playing Spider-man and flying through the air and dancing on stage!

At the end of the show, we got to see the characters come out and introduce themselves. There were some jokes from the Green Goblin, and he isn’t so sinister when he’s not doing evil things or creating sinister plots. There was an auction for Peter’s glasses, and as a joke, I tried to raise my Dad’s hand. I guess I’ve been watching too much Storage Wars. This is an amazing show, and I recommend it to any - one who thinks they have already seen the best show ever!

- 33 - IBIA Goes All Over

Homefield Bowl

Homefield Bowl is a fun place to bowl for lots of people in Yonkers. I like Homefield Bowl because their bowling balls aren’t so heavy. They have great food and the people that work there are great. My friends and I always have fun there. My family likes it because it is close by. My Mom has never been to it but when my Dad comes we’re going. It’s the best bowling place I’ve ever been to so I think more people should think that too. Their shoes are not the best but I like laughing at myself so I don’t really care. They also host birthday parties. That’s why Homefield Bowl was my favorite trip. – Karla Castillo

New Roc City New Roc City is really fun. My favorite part of visiting New Roc was going on the roller coaster ride called Space Shot. The Space Shot ride shoots you up a tall tower and in three seconds or less you feel like you are falling fast. New Roc is an arcade with lots of games and activities that opened in New Rochelle in 1999. There is a place to bowl and play pool and there is a laser tag room and an ice rink. You can also play mini golf. There is also a go-kart track and people love it. New Roc City is 1,200,000 square feet of pure fun. It cost $190 million to make New Roc but the price is well worth making so many people happy! – Alondra Pena

Medieval Times

We had the most amazing time at Medieval Times. This was the best trip that we have been to with I Believe, I Achieve and we have been on many other trips. We had the opportunity to go to Medieval Times again this year. When we went last year the Green Knight was the villain and the three other knights were fighting him. We had been rooting for the Black and White Knight. We got to watch them fight and we got to eat lunch at the same time. Now I know why people dream of going to Medieval Times. – Diana Marji

- 34 - Some of our favorite trips and activities! Take Me Out to CitiField to See the N.Y. Mets

The N.Y. Mets game was a lot of fun. It was my first time at CitiField and it is a beautiful stadium. The team’s best pitcher, R.A. Dickey, was pitching, but unfortunately the Mets still lost to the Washington Nationals. Even though they were losing, the crowd was still happy, doing the wave and dancing. The team mascot Mr. Met came out and shot T-shirts out to the crowd. I sat next to Marie, and we talked about cotton candy. We left before the game ended be - cause it was pretty obvious that the Mets were going to lose. When we left the game I got home at 10:00 and I en - joyed myself. – Nylah Zongo

Maritime Aquarium

We had such a great time at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT. We saw mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The one that stood out to me the most was the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. The length of this turtle’s shell can be up to 49 inches and these turtles can weigh up to 398 pounds. The Giant Pacific Octopus was most certainly amazing with those suction cups on his tentacles. The Pacific Walrus uses his tusks and flippers for traction. Pacific Walruses mostly feed on krill, clams, and mussels. – Jonathan Massey

Sports Time USA Rocks Last spring I went to Sports Time USA with the I Believe, I Achieve group. It’s a great place to visit. There are many arcade games! Also there are two great rides, one is Bumper Cars and the other one is Swirl Around. I loved the Arcade games! My favorite ride is the Bumper Cars because with the Bumper Cars you get in the car and bump people a lot! I finally know how to drive a car! – Marie Delance

When Marsha Tom, the Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, asked me to oversee the I Believe, I Achieve mag - azine project, I was thrilled. As a former magazine editor and the mother of four, I found working on a magazine created by and for kids interested in achieving and being their best selves irresistible. In my role as Director of Public Relations for Family Services of Westchester, I have worked with Marsha on publicity efforts and know first-hand how dedicated she is to the mentees and mentors in her program.

And what a fun and rewarding project it’s been! Luckily, Laura Cacciato, a talented graphic artist who has worked with me on many FSW newsletters and Annual Reports, agreed to handle the design of the IBIA Magazine. She has done a fantastic job, selecting photos and logos, choosing different typefaces and fonts to match each story and insisting that each student has his or her own special page.

I was also blessed to have a wonderful intern, Kylee Harris, help this entire summer, preparing story packages for each student and working with me to encourage each participant to do their best when researching and writing about their favorite subject. Not surprisingly, Kylee, a former summer camp counselor, was a big hit with the young students. She finished each of our sessions with the kids with a game she knew from camp.

Twice a week for approximately six weeks, the students from I Believe, I Achieve would come to the Jerome Technology Learning Center at the Family Services of Westchester’s headquarters in Post Chester and learn about writing, researching and interviewing and work on their stories. It was so much fun to see them uncover obscure facts about their favorite subjects such as the one about Katy Perry getting her start at the age of nine as a gospel singer in her pastor parents’ church, or the one about One Direction’s Liam Payne having only one working kidney. Who Knew! It was particularly touching to read their bios as they professed their adoration for their parents and pets, mentors and teachers, and expressed how grateful they were for being chosen to participate in the I Believe, I Achieve program.

Laura, Kylee and I often joked that we wanted to be an IBIA kid and receive a new laptop, learn about robotics and see Spider-man on Broadway and the Mets at CitiField.

We know how much the students appreciate all the benefits of this program and their work on the magazine is a testament to its positive effects on them.

We are so grateful to the wonderful support and inspiration the Vera and Walter Scherr Foundation and the Lanza Family Foundation have given these students and for Marsha Tom’s effective leadership of the program. We are optimistic that all of the I Believe, I Achieve students will reach their goals and be their best selves!

With gratitude, Colleen Davis Gardephe

“I learned so much about myself that I didn’t know about me!” “I love being in I Believe, I Achieve.” “Can we stay here in this program, even after we graduate?” “I Believe, I Achieve really changed my life!” “Can there be Big Brothers Big Sisters programs like this in college?” Take a moment and speak to our children in the I Believe, I Achieve program and these are some of things you will discover. Our parents will tell you even more!

Our children see school differently. They see their futures in a different way. They have hope and faith in what they do and who they are and in the promise that their futures hold. I Believe, I Achieve was designed to help children and parents develop a love of learning in order to succeed in life. IBIA has helped to restore and rebuild what has been broken and has initiated new growth in each and every seedling, our IBIA children. Our Big Brothers and Big Sisters from Manhattanville College and Mercy College give their time, energy and love and devote them - selves in earnest to that one special Little Brother or Little Sister. Positive role models are not all they are to these Littles. Our Bigs serve as a voice of concern, a caring and guiding force, Marsha Tom, left, joins the IBIA students for a game of a reminder that they can achieve anything “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader?” because there will always be people in their lives who care and will continue to nurture them.

It is such a fulfilling experience to see children eager to go to school and to watch as parents are actively engaged in their children’s development as well as their own. The heart of this program is based on high expectations rooted in consistency and love. While we expect this, we also strive to provide the much needed support in order to meet those high expectations. Come and visit IBIA on any given day and you will witness the magic for yourself. Children improving academically and feeling so proud of their accomplishments, excellent attendance being achieved and sustained and self confidence bursting at the seams; these are all a result of the wondrous teamwork achieved by Herman Bonaparte, IBIA Program Coordinator, Diedra Johnson, Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor Manager, Taren Washington, Scholastic Academy’s Principal, school staff and most certainly the children and parents themselves. When I am surrounded by our Littles, I have great faith that we are in the midst of great achievers who will change the course of society. I am so grateful to our funders, the Vera and Walter Scherr Foundation and the Lanza Family Foundation. They have restored hope and the capacity to dream in the lives of so many.

With much gratitude and appreciation, Marsha Tom Marsha Tom Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of FSW

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of Westchester has been successfully matching Bigs and Littles since 1958. National studies show that children who participate in a Big Brothers Big Sisters program demonstrate improved performance in school, have higher self-esteem, and are less likely to use drugs. We’re changing children’s lives one child at a time. Help us to change just one life.
