Huntington’s disease affects the central nervous system and is caused by a faulty gene passed down through families. Each child of a parent with Huntington’s has a 50% chance of inheriting it. It changes the whole person – body, mind and behaviour. Over time, the person with Huntington's disease will experience changes in their movements, behaviour and mental well-being. Around 8000 people in the UK have Huntington’s and around 32000 are at risk of developing it. It is rare and often misunderstood- due to the involuntary movements associated with the disease, people with Huntington's are frequently mistaken as being drunk. How we support people with Huntington's disease The Huntington’s Disease Association is a national charity supporting people affected by Huntington’s disease across England and Wales. Our vision - a better life for anyone affected by Huntington’s disease. We are dedicated to improving care and support services for people with Huntington's disease, educating families and health and social care professionals and championing people's rights. May 2019 is Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month and the perfect opportunity to increase people’s knowledge and understanding of this little known but devastating disease. To support our aim of raising more awareness we're asking iconic buildings and landmarks to illuminate in pink and/or green (our charity colours) to raise awareness as part of a global campaign called #LightItUp4HD. What started as a single 'Light up' event in Toronto, Canada back in 2015 (with the lighting of the CN Tower) has grown into an international campaign with ten countries and more than 100 sites across the world! There have been some very impressive light up sites in the past including Niagara Falls, the Kelpies in Scotland, Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and more! So far, in 2019, Blackpool tower, Spinnaker Tower Portsmouth, George's Dock Liverpool, Smeaton's tower Plymouth and Mountbatten tower Plymouth are some of the buildings to have confirmed so far! Will you join them? One question that needs to be asked, however, is whether it is feasible and desirable to completely evacuate the high-rise building in fires. This research seeks to remedy this problem by proposing one or more efficient egress plan(s) for high-rise buildings. Investigation into a number of Dutch projects, international fire codes and state-of-the-art literature laid the foundation for this study. Four egress plans have been presented from a worldwide perspective for a specific certain building: Koningin Julianaplein in The Hague, the Netherlands.
