1 The Tree – Pedigree to Person Page

The Tree is the area within FamilySearch where users can add and connect generations of their through the Pedigree view or the Person Page.

2 Overview Tree is the area within FamilySearch where users can access the records of family members, both and descendants, that have been entered into “The Tree”.

You will learn about pedigree views and how to use them to add and connect generations of family members in .

You will also learn about the information available in a personal record called the Person Page.

From the Person Page, you can view your relationship to 15 generations of ancestors or descendants, search for records, reserve ordinances, add or delete relationships, and much more.

3 Objectives

After completing this lesson, you’ll be able to:

1. Display the four pedigree views in Family Tree and explain the advantages of each view. 2. Change the starting (root) person in Descendancy view without leaving the page. 3. Explain the features on the Summary Card. 4. Access your tree and show how to use the drop-down features. 5. Describe the information contained in the sections and boxes on the Person Page. 6. Demonstrate how to change the Preferred Portrait. 7. Add a person to the Watch List and explain its purpose. 8. Find, modify and print Family Group records and pedigree charts. 9. Explain Record Hints, Data Problems, and Research Suggestions and be able to dismiss them. 10. Standardise dates and places.

4 Landscape View in Family Tree After clicking on Family Tree from the Home Page: 1 4 1. You see one of four pedigree views 2. Use the plus or minus icons to enlarge or shrink the view. 2 3. Clicking on a v or > (arrow) will reveal more information, such as more generations, or more or children. 4. You can vary the information 3 displayed by checking or unchecking information and alert icons under Options. 3 The pedigree view last used on signing out of Family Tree will be the view displayed Landscape view on signing back in.

Using the Landscape view in Family Tree Family + Tree + Landscape 5 Portrait view in Family Tree

The Portrait view is similar to the Landscape view on the previous page, but is rotated 90° with descendants shown below and ancestors shown above. You do not see the ancestors of the starting person’s .

This view is excellent for printing a portrait chart. You can see which family members are missing a portrait at a glance. Portrait view

Pedigree views in Family Tree Family + Tree + Pedigree + View Printing 4-generation pedigree charts, portrait pedigrees and fan charts … Family + Tree + Chart + Printing 6 Fan Chart View in Family Tree In Fan chart view you can simultaneously see: 1. Between five and seven generations from the 1 starting person in a variety of views. 2. Other wives and children at the bottom of the fan 3 will display if you click the white > (arrow) icon. 3. Clicking the Fan icon at the bottom of a person’s cell will open a new fan with that person in the Starting Position. Fan Chart view allows you to: • See missing family members at a glance. 2 • Print more generations at a time than any other Fan Chart view view. Select a person on the outer edge of the fan chart to put in the starting position, then switch to Descendancy view. It’s then easy to go down the lines of descendants to see your distant .

Using the Fan Chart in Family Tree Family + Tree + Fan + Chart Printing 4-generation pedigree charts, portrait pedigrees and fan charts … Family + Tree + Chart + Printing 7 Descendancy View in Family Tree Descendancy view is unique because it displays ancestors as with their children showing vertically beneath them (descendants). You can use this view to:

• Expand the line forward in time instead of backward. • Locate possible gaps where children could be missing. • See ancestors that could be missing a spouse. • Trace collateral lines. • View more family members on one page than in any other view (if you do not show portraits) • View research hints and ordinances that can be reserved at a glance (lined up on to the right of a person’s name)

Use Expand to change the starting (root) person Descendancy view in Descendancy view without leaving the page.

Using the Descendancy view in Family Tree Family + Tree + Descendancy 8 Recents In Family Tree, when you click on 1. Using Recents in Family Tree Family + Tree + Recents 9 Find Feature The Family Tree menu contains the Find feature that allows patrons to search for family members that may already be in Family Tree. Click on FIND in the submenu, type some vital information into the search window, click , and view the search results for a match. Narrow your search by clicking an exact match box , by adding information to other fields, or by adding spouse or parents.

Don’t forget the option of clicking the right-hand tab to Find by ID.

Using the Find feature in Family Tree Family + Tree + Find + Feature 10 Lists – People You are Watching

When you select Lists from the Family Tree submenu, your Watch List is displayed. To place a watch on someone, go to their person page. Under the person's name in the top grey banner, click . A weekly email will then notify you if any changes to the vital information or sources connected with people you are watching. You can also view changes made in the last 30 days when you click on Changes to People I’m Watching. To see only changes made by others, click the box next to Hide Changes I’ve Made. Columns can be sorted, and you can search for names, ID numbers, places or other information The Watch List is a really using the Filter box. useful collaboration tool!

Using the Watch feature in the Family Tree Family + Tree + Watch + Feature 11 Summary Card – The Bridge from Pedigree to Person

From any of the pedigree views in Family Tree, you can click on a person’s name to see their Summary Card. This card is a quick view of information as well as a bridge to the more detailed Person Page.

• Click on the Watch to add the person to your Watch List. • When you click on Memories, you will be taken to the matching section on the full Person Page. • If you hover over the Temple ordinances icons, you will see the date and temple where ordinances were completed. You can tell what the status of any ordinance is by the colour of the icon.

Summary Card in Family Tree Family + Tree + Summary + Card 12 The Person Page #1 The Person Page in Family tree displays information and memories about a person. It also provides features to help you make the person's record more complete and accurate. When looking for information, begin at the top! Clicking on the Person link on a Summary card opens the Person Page in the Details view.

Here you will see • Preferred portrait of your (if one has been selected from their Memories) • Name • Birth date and Death date (if known and entered) • All-important ID number of that person’s record in Family Tree.

Takes you to pedigree view with that person in the starting position. Displays your relationship to an ancestor for up to 15 generations. Take time to explore the information contained in each of these areas. There have recently been major changes to the Person Page and the way it operates. Make sure you are fully conversant both with the new layout and all the information contained therein!

15 Adding and Editing Information – Left Column

Information in each section on the left column can be added or edited. 1 Clicking Open Details opens all the entries in that section (1). Entries can also be viewed and edited individually by clicking 2 on the blue entry (2). 3

Clicking on History will show 4 the item plus any changes made since it was entered (3).

Click on the Display Name of the contributor to message them, either directly through an email address, or through our message system. If sources were tagged to that information, they will also display here (4).

Reason statements in Family Tree Family + Tree + Reason + Statements Correcting a person’s vital information (name, sex events and facts) in FT Family + Tree + Correcting + Information Life Sketch, Other Information, Sources, Discussions, Notes and Stories 16 Family + Tree + Life + Sketch What is in a Name? The name in the Vital Information section should be the official version of a person’s name, typically the name given at birth. If a woman changed her name after , use her maiden name rather than her married name.

If certain characters or words are in a name, the system will show “Needs More Information”. Also, names such Nicknames and alternate names can be as “Infant,” or “Miss” should not be used. entered into the Other Information section.

If a date or place is not in standard format, click on the blue entry link for that information (birth, death, marriage, etc.), then click Edit.

In the pop-out window, click on the yellow banner and choose a standard place. It will turn green to show that the system recognises that those two paces correspond to each other.

To change what is in the actual entry, enter a space at the end of the date or place. Then select a date or place from the list that appears in the drop-down menu below the bar. Enter the reason for the change and Save.

Approximate dates may be entered as About, Before, or After. See the articles below for tips on recording historical places whose names have changed over time..

Entering standardized dates and places in Family Tree Family + Tree + Standardised 18 Research Help Alerts – Right Column On the right side of the Person Page you will find boxes with information and tools to help you with your research.

The Research Help box Data Problems alert that there is a conflict includes: in information.

Research Suggestion alerts are generated by opportunities for adding more information.

Click Show Details to review, dismiss, or restore alerts.

The Research Help Box on the Person page in Family Tree Family + Tree + Research + Help 19 Dismissing Data Problems and Research Suggestions Some Data Problems and Research Suggestions can be dismissed; some cannot be dismissed.

To dismiss a Data Problem or Research Suggestion from either the pedigree view or the Research Help box on a person page:

1. Click on the icon and hover over the text beneath the coloured banner. If the alert can be dismissed, an X will appear on the right. 2. Click on the X. The Hint is dismissed after you have provided your reason.

You can also use Show Details in the Research Help box to dismiss a Hint. If a hint cannot be dismissed, you will not see an X when you hover over it and you will not see the word Dismiss in the Show Details window. In the Print box are choices for generating PDF-format reports like Pedigrees and Family Group Sheets. They can be downloaded or printed directly from the browser. Prints Family Group Sheets Printing problems are usually specific to the computer equipment used. Local support is often required to resolve any issues.

In the Latest Changes box, click Show all. This opens a new page with the most recent changes listed at the top. It may help to spend time seeing if you can trace how each change that is made is recorded. Reason statements found here are especially useful.

When you open the details of blue items in the left column of the person page and click History, you can see changes made to that individual item

Delete Person is only available if you are the only one who has modified the person record. It is often more appropriate to detach a person or merge them.

Deleting a person’s record from Family Tree Family + Tree + Delete + Person 22 Apply What You Have Learned

Scenario 1

Maria just wants to work on her grandad’s family line and complains that the other family lines on the pedigree chart get in the way. She wants to know if there is a way she can just see her grandad’s family line.

Can you help her find a way to focus on her grandfather’s family line without the pedigree showing her grandmother’s family line?

How can her grandpa show at the top of the History List so it will be easy for her to open his Person Page quickly when she signs in to FamilySearch?

23 Apply What You Have Learned

Scenario 1

Maria just wants to work on her grandad’s family line and complains that the other family lines on the pedigree chart get in the way. She wants to know if there is a way she can just see her grandad’s family line.

Can you help her find a way to focus on her grandfather’s family line without the pedigree showing her grandmother’s family line?

He wonders if there is a way he can tell when someone has changed the record for one of his ancestors without having to go in and check the record all the time.

Scenario 2

Oscar is complaining that people keep changing his family member’s information in Family Tree.

He wonders if there is a way he can tell when someone has changed the record for one of his ancestors without having to go in and check the record all the time.

What will you have him do?

Solution: Suggest he goes to his ancestor’s Person page and click the Watch star to add him to the watch list. Encourage him to make contact and work together with the person making the changes through FamilySearch messaging. Always preferable to a confrontational approach! 26 Apply What You Have Learned

Paula loved using Family Group Sheets and printing them out for her binder in new.familysearch.org.

Now she cannot find a Family Group Form of any kind in Family Tree. She wants to know if they are still available anywhere and how she can find and print them.

He wants to know if there is a quicker, easier way to get back to the Person page of someone he has viewed before.

Additionally have him to find and read the article entitled “Dismissing data problems in Family Tree” in the Help Centre, then demonstrate how research hints can be dismissed. Finally, show Tobias how to prevent hints from displaying by unchecking the boxes next to them on the Options drop-down menu seen on the pedigree page. 34 Checklist Your should now be capable of the following:
