Aviation Executive Monthly Frank Jay & Associates – , Aviation and Aerospace Executive Search

When Doors Seem Closed, by Frank M. Jay We see situations all the time that involve persons who are concerned about seeking out employment opportunities due to negative circumstances with previous employers. The situations we are talking about do not involve termination of previous employment for misconduct but pertain to termination of employment due to the following circumstances:

• Lack of performance or perceived lack of performance; • A change in leadership or management; • Disagreement with a supervisor or department head; • Layoffs; • Corporate sale, merger or failure.

One or more of these situations will happen to everyone sooner or later in their career. They are discouraging and can often involve negative feedback and references that are harmful to future employment opportunities. But, in the long run, these situations offer opportunity for personal growth and advancement…provided that positive action is taken to find and establish the next effective career move.

In such cases, it can often seem that “doors are closed” to future employment opportunities. In almost every case, they are not. It has been said that “there is an opportunity for every person” and that pretty well rings true. The problem, of course, is finding that opportunity and then successfully taking advantage of it. Doing so is easier said than done in many cases but there are a few key actions to take once you have located an opportunity of interest and you have secured an interview.

Of course, it’s important to prepare your resume in a professional and effective manner. But for this discussion, we are going to assume that you have done so and that your resume has passed the test…that you have been contacted by a future employer and an interview (by phone, video conference, or in person) has been scheduled. When that happens…especially the first time it occurs…you will probably have a moderate to extreme “panic attack” as you ponder how you will address the circumstances of your previous employment termination.

We propose that prior to the interview, you should carefully prepare by doing the following:

When Doors Seem Closed (continued from page 1)

1) Establish your references and employment relationships before interviewing - You know that your potential employer is going to ask about references from your previous employer and those references may not be positive. If they are good and you can rely on that as a fact, then give your previous supervisor as your reference. If you are concerned about your supervisor’s reference being negative, than focus on references from supervisors with previous employers that will give positive references. Additionally, to rebut negative references from a past employer, provide references from other department heads that you worked with or provide references from your peers at that company. Lastly, you might research business and personal relationships that you have in common with management at your future employer and utilize them as references. 2) Think like a lawyer by anticipating questions that will be asked about you and your previous employment - Obvious questions are going to be asked about your previous employment. If you ponder those a bit from the viewpoint of the interviewer, you can begin to prepare appropriate responses. Obviously, you won’t think of all the possible questions that might be asked and that is why each interview that you have will allow you to hear more questions and improve your responses, including the delivery of those responses. Success comes with experience – in interviewing just as in life. 3) Don’t be too detailed regarding your termination circumstances - Questions are going to be asked about your previous employment and you want to answer them as simply and directly as possible. For example, there may be multiple reasons why your termination was ended. For simplicity’s sake, we propose that you focus your communication on the main reasons which should be one or two in most cases. Too much detail may “bog down” the interview process and it is really better to let the interviewer ask the questions and then just answer them as simply as possible. Of course, in some cases, it may be necessary to extend the explanation…but the point here is to keep it simple.

In our opinion, keeping these three points in mind will help you to interview more successfully and to gain successful employment more quickly. Keep in mind, success comes with experience. Each interview…regardless of the immediate outcome…will help you to improve and to move forward to an ultimately successful result.
