This family is distributed on the South of continents and islands around the Antarctic (South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand), with more or less 40 species and 5 genus. The family, genus and species present great phylogenetic and biogeographic questions in relation to their center of origin and dispersion. One species, Galaxias maculatus is common to a great part of the family-distribution (South America, Australia and New Zealand) and its way of dispersion is being discussed. A discussion of systematic advances obtained in Galaxiids is done by characters of external and internal Morphology, Cytogenetic, Electrophoresis, Analysis of Multivariance, Ecology and Zoogeography.     This Conservation Advice was approved by the Delegate of the Minister on 11 April 2014 Approved Conservation Advice for Paragalaxias eleotroides (Great Lake paragalaxias) (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing and draft plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Paragalaxias eleotroides (Great Lake paragalaxias), family Galaxiidae, also known as the Great Lake darter, is a small, stout freshwater fish, reaching a maximum length of approximately 60 mm (McDowall, 1996; Allen et al., 2002). Adults are light, golden-brown in colour on the back, tending to a pale yellow to white on the underside. They are very similar in appearance to the closely related Shannon paragalaxias (P. dissimilis), but are distinguished by the lack of any pores under the lower jaw, which are present in the Shannon paragalaxias, and by its ‘down turned’ mouth (McDowall, 1996; McDowall, 1998; Allen et al., 2002). Conservation Status The Great Lake paragalaxias is listed as vulnerable under the name Paragalaxias eleotroides (Great Lake Paragalaxias). This species is eligible for listing as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as it has a restricted geographic distribution that is precarious for its survival. Its extent of occurrence is estimated to be 172 km2 and its area of occupancy is estimated to be 164 km2. The species is known only from three locations, the Great Lake, Shannon Lagoon and Penstock Lagoon (TSSC, 2006).

    Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Guide to Users Background What is the summary for and where does it come from? This summary has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. It highlights important elements of the biodiversity of the region in two ways: • Listing species which may be significant for management because they are found only in the region, mainly in the region, or they have a conservation status such as endangered or vulnerable. • Comparing the region to other parts of Australia in terms of the composition and distribution of its species, to suggest components of its biodiversity which may be nationally significant. The summary was produced using the Australian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. There are 11 Galaxiidae species covered in this plan, of which 10 are listed as threatened under both State and Commonwealth legislation and one is listed under the TSP Act only. All but one species covered by this plan are endemic to Tasmania. For Galaxiella pusilla, which also occurs in Victoria and South Australia, this plan addresses the Tasmanian populations only. Adoption as a national recovery plan under the EPBC Act only refers to species listed under the EPBC Act. An example is the development of a population model for Macquarie perch to directly inform a translocation program.
