The Columbia River Gorge has the most spectacular scenic vistas in the country. The little town of Goldendale is considered by many to be the area gateway to the gorge, located on Highway 97 about 50 miles south of Toppenish. The small quaint town provides a convenient stop for fuel, food, and refreshments, as well as an opportunity to visit the Goldendale Observatory which is perched on a 2,100-ft. hilltop and contains one of the largest public telescopes in the country. Other attractions and a few miles further south are the Maryhill Museum and Stonehenge Monument, both overlooking the amazing Columbia River. The Museum of Art has been accredited by the American Association of Museums. Of 8,000 museums nationwide, only 750 are accredited, with only 15 in Washington and Oregon. The museum’s collections are housed in a castle-like chateau in 26 acres of park-like gardens on 6,000 acres of ranch land. Museum displays include Rodin sculpture, paintings, and an extensive collection of Samuel Hill’s memorabilia, among other items. Maryhill’s Stonehenge was the first monument in the nation to honor the dead of World War I. It was built by Sam Hill as a tribute to the soldiers of Klickitat County who lost their lives. The structure is a full-scale replica of England’s famous neolithic Stonehenge. The monument is four miles east of the museum, off Washington Scenic Route 14. Hill’s crypt is a short walk southwest of Stonehenge on a bluff overlooking the Columbia River. For observatory hours call 509-773-3141, or visit www.goldendaleobservatory.com

County Line in Grandview, Bill’s Berry Farm is a family owned and operated farm. Bill’s Berry Farm is a small family farm located in the beautiful Yakima Valley of eastern Washington. Where they specialize in ‘Farm Fresh Produce and Family Fun’ and love to have your family come pick some fruit, fresh from the field! Bill and Julie Michener own and operate the farm, along with six of their nine children. Both Bill and Julie were raised in the valley, both with dreams of owning their own farm. Their dream became a reality in 1994. Their first orchards consisted of golden delicious apples, Bing and Van cherries. Since then, the farm has expanded to include more cherries, apples, organic blueberries, pumpkins, squash, and a corn maze, bringing their total production to 70 acres. Recent planting of peaches, nectarines, and apricots became available for picking back in 2014, as well as new strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry plantings. During the harvest months for their crops, they will host a festival highlighting that crop. During the last Friday and Saturday in June, they hosted the Cherry Festival. This is the first festival of the summer and what better way to celebrate summer, than with fresh, sweet and delicious cherries. Their fields are clean and beautiful and there are no ladders required so every member of the family got the chance to ride the wagon out to the field with the opportunity to fill their own buckets. You also have the option of picking up some pre-picked fruit, available in their Farm Store. The second festival of the summer is the blueberry festival. The Blueberry festival is held during the first Friday and Saturday in July. This festival allows you to pick fresh and yummy blueberries. After picking in the warm sunshine, cool down in the shade of the big trees on beautiful grounds and tap your toe to live music, while the youngsters have fun in Farmer Bill’s Tree fort and tractor playground. Allow time to stroll through the unique selection of craft and antique vendor booths, eat a yummy All-American lunch from Berry Park BBQ. August is home to the Peach Festival. This festival takes place during the first two Fridays and Saturdays of August. You can enjoy a celebration of summers glorious golden fruit. Hop a hayride out to the pedestrian friendly orchard, where the small trees make it possible for every member of the family to discover that nothing compares to a ripe juicy peach fresh off the tree. The biggest festival at Bill’s Berry Farm would have to be the Apple and Pumpkin Festival. This festival runs from The last two Saturdays in September and all Fridays and Saturday weekends in October. Spend some time treasure hunting in the pumpkin patch for that perfect carving pumpkin. Aside from offering a wide variety of pumpkins and gourds for fall décor, you can also Squeeze-Your-Own Apple Cider. This is always a huge hit with every member of the family, as well as an adventure in the orchard to pick crisp, yummy, fresh off the tree apples. Sit around the campfire and enjoy a caramel apple or a hot dog while the kids play in their new FarmLAND, which includes the Barnyard Mystery Corn Maze, straw climb, steer roping, and more. Younger ones will enjoy exploring the Little Farmers area, while older kids (and even adults) love taking aim with the apple sling shots, where if you make it through the donut hole you win a dozen free donuts! The final festival of the year, is the Christmas Tree on the Farm Festival. This begins Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and goes to the first two Friday/Saturday weekends in December. The fam looks absolutely stunning decked in hundreds of fresh cut trees, scores of beautiful handmade wreaths and garlands, and tons of twinkling Christmas lights. You can even place an order for a custom wreath or length of garland and they’ll make it while you watch. It is the goal of Bill’s Berry Farm that with the use of sustainable agricultural practices, their children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren will be able to keep Bill’s Berry Farm in healthy production for future generations. They strive to provide you with some of the best fresh, healthy produce the valley Central Washington’s has to offer. 28 The Grape Vine 2016 | TOURS www.thegrapevinenw.com Ballooning Over Wine Country

A visitor of Prosser by the name of Ted Wirch, came across an open field and thought it ‘The perfect place for ballooning.” For the past 28 years, that is exactly what Prosser has done with their Great Balloon Rally. For one weekend in September, hot air balloons fill the sky at The Great Prosser Balloon Rally. This year the 28th Annual Great Prosser Balloon Rally will be held Sept. 22, 23 and 24th, if weather allows. If you’re looking to watch, the balloons are scheduled to launch at sunrise from the Prosser Airport. Balloon pilots from all over the Northwestern United States will congregate to Prosser to participate in the Great Prosser Balloon Rally. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early, around 6:15 a.m., at the airport to watch the pilots prepare the giant balloons. Some lucky spectators are even asked to assist the balloon pilots inflate, chase, and recover the Hot-Air-Balloons. Don’t forget your camera! You may be able to capture a beautiful photo. Local businesses sponsor balloons and sometimes allow for a spectator to go up in the balloon. Last year, a member of our staff had the opportunity to cross riding in a hot air balloon off of her bucketlist. Along with the sunrise launch, the Great Prosser Balloon Rally is also accompanied by a weekend full of family activities. The weekend activities in Prosser include: Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Launches, Night Glow, Harvest Festival, Farmers Market, and the Caren Mercer-Andreason Street Painting Festival. The airport field and Art Fiker aren’t pet friendly areas, so if you plan on attending the morning launch or the Night Glow Show, you will have to leave your fur babies behind. Walla Walla with be host to the 43rd Walla Walla Balloon Stampede. The Walla Walla Balloon Stampede takes flight on October 18-22, 2017. Inflations begin each morning at 7:15 a.m. at Howard Tietan Park (located at 616 E Tietan St). The first morning of the Walla Walla Balloon Stampede has been set aside specifically for the children to share in the “Billy Blastvalve’s Kids’ Day.” Kids get the opportunity to get in a basket and float off the ground. Pilots are excited to share this event with the community again. Thursday is the first day of flight, set aside for the members of the media to capture the sights as the Stampede into the air begins. Friday plays host to the V.I.P launch, and the first “all fly” morning which is sponsored by GESA Credit Union and will include over 30 pilots and balloons. That same evening joins the community and balloon pilots at the “Nigh Glow Spectacular.” Saturday the pilots are challenged to navigate their flight. They are required to fly away from their launch site and return from whence they came. The pilot who successfully navigates this challenge is awarded the “Mayor’s Cup” for aviation excellence – and possibly some monetary award as well. Sunday is considered “The Last Dance.” All the Balloons are inflated and expected to lift off within just thirty seconds – over 30 balloons with rise off the ground in 30 seconds – dubbing this the “Great Launch,” – an exercise in motion or as pilots call it – a sky dance. As per usually weather is always a factor when ballooning.

30 The Grape Vine 2017 www.thegrapevinenw.com The 31st Annual Ye Merrie Greenwood Renaissance Faire

The 31st Annual Ye Merrie Greenwood Renaissance Faire is a celebration of Elizabethan England utilizing environmental theater, music, dance, puppets, magic, jugglers, arts and crafts, food and games. Ye Merrie Greenwood Faire was established in 1986 as a SunFest event. In 1989, Ye Merrie Greenwood Players, the people who “people” the “Faire”, incorporated to became the only non-profit touring Renaissance Company in the State of Washington at that time. We tour throughout the Northwest, but the “Faire” is the culmination of the “Players” work and is the “Home Event” for the troupe. The Greenwood Players consists of actors, dancers, and musicians of all ages. We bring Elizabethan England alive through song, dance, costuming, and environmental theatre. The company members research their own character and make their own costumes. The clothing they wear is a real expression both character they play and their own personality, as well as a representation of actual clothing of the times. The faire will be held in Columbia Park in Kennewick on September 23 and 24. There will be continuous simultaneous live entertainment on eight stages as well as street acts. Hundreds of costumed performers and over 70 period vendors create an atmosphere of an Elizabethan village in 1585.
