In this capital of music we will enjoy a symphony of scientifi c, educational, social and cultural events. The EFORT Executive Committee and the local Austrian organisers are delighted to invite you to participate in the 10th EFORT Congress in Vienna from 3–6 June, 2009. In harmony with the musical theme of the Congress, a special note will be sounded by the fact that this is the 10th EFORT Congress. EFORT was founded in 1991 and its fi rst Congress was held in Paris in 1993. After a number of years of biennial Congresses, EFORT now organises such events annually. The scientifi c programme includes symposia and instructional lectures delivered by distinguished speakers from across Europe, as well as free papers, e-posters, workshops, industry symposia and technical exhibits. Furthermore, there will be controversial case discussions and pro and con sessions. Following on from Nice last year, we will also be holding ExMEx (Expert Meets Expert) sessions. These are half-day sessions covering a specifi c theme. We have continued to broaden our collaboration with the specialist organisations for the scientifi c programme. Along with the exhibition, this Congress format will cover the full range of contempo- rary orthopaedics and traumatology in Europe. The Congress will take place at the Austria Centre Vienna, which is well known for hosting large congresses. It is located in the eastern part of the city and easily accessible by a direct underground line from Vienna city centre. This is an excellent venue at which to exchange scientifi c knowledge, share experience and build awareness of future trends. Vienna is also well known for its lovely combination of pleasant atmosphere and cultural events. On behalf of EFORT, and also personally, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Professor Karl Knahr, to our colleagues on the Local Organising Committee, as well as the whole of the Austrian Society of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery. Special thanks to the Chairman of the Scientifi c Committee, Professor Pierre Hoffmeyer, who with the committee members has worked hard on the programme. Thanks also to the entire staff of the congress organiser, OIC, and of the EFORT Central Offi ce in Zurich for their hard work and devotion. I look forward to seeing all you congress participants here in Vienna! Karl-Göran Thorngren EFORT President 3 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE LOCAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE Karl Knahr Chairman LO Vienna 2009 Dear Colleagues, The success of this very special EFORT Congress – we celebrate our 10th anniversary event – rests on the high quality of the scientifi c programme, the support of and co-operation with industry, and fi nally the social programme, which will attract not only participants but also their partners. The scientifi c programme covers a wide range of knowledge in the fi eld of orthopaedics and traumatology. Major topics are current concepts in joint replacement, the surgical and non-surgical treatment of spine diseases, recent advances in the treatment of trauma in children and adults, and new biological concepts in orthopaedics and traumatology. Our new ExMEx sessions proved a great success during the last meeting in Nice and are therefore increased in number for the Vienna meeting. They cover traumatolo- gy in paediatrics, advances in spine surgery, osteoporotic fractures, treatment of sports trauma around the knee, and new tribologi- cal concepts in total hip arthroplasty. Another of the meeting’s goals is to promote the European Orthopaedic Board examination – EBOT – by offering a full-day course dedicated to this exam. This comprehensive orthopaedic review and refresher course has been introduced specifi cally for trainees and young residents. It will cover the full spectrum of orthopaedics and traumatology as a basis for their preparation for the examination. Industry plays an important role in our meeting. We have scheduled over 20 industry lunch symposia that will appeal to all participants at the Congress. The Austria Centre provides a huge space for the industrial exhibition, giving exhibitors the opportunity to present all of their products to their best advantage for interested surgeons. I am sure that the industry exhibition will be a special highlight at this Congress. The cultural highlights are to be found in the centre of Vienna. Within the central district, with almost everywhere within walking distance, you can admire the famous buildings around the “Ringstraße” – the Opera House, parliament, the famous Burgtheater, the Town Hall, the University of Vienna and many more. Of course, a tour in a “Fiaker” is another delightful option to visit famous places such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Schönbrunn Palace or the Belvedere, with its wonderful collection of major works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. If you have enough time, a visit to the State Opera House shouldn’t be missed. The Executive Board, the Scientifi c and Local Organising Committees, and all members of staff at EFORT Central Offi ce look forward to welcoming you to this anniversary Congress at the heart of Europe. Looking forward to seeing you in Vienna. Prof. Dr. K. Knahr Chairman LO Vienna 2009 4 WELCOME ADDRESS FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Pierre Hoffmeyer Chairman EFORT Scientifi c Committee Dear Colleagues, EFORT 2009 in Vienna – where it’s all happening! This tenth EFORT Congress will reunite orthopaedic surgeons from Europe and beyond, all on a quest for new knowledge drawn from contributions from the national and speciality societies that make up our vast orthopaedic network. The Scientifi c Committee, along with the EFORT scientifi c advisors, have painstakingly reviewed and analysed over 3,500 abstracts. After some diffi cult decisions, less than twenty per cent of Free Paper submissions could be accepted as podium presentations. The Poster and E-Poster formulae will make much more of the valuable material that was submitted available to the orthopaedic community. Many innovative training formats will be offered to participants in Vienna: − Experts meet Experts: where presenters and experts meet eye to eye for in-depth and hands-on interaction. − Controversial Case Discussions: confront the experts and their audience with hard questions, and fi nd practice-oriented answers and solutions. − Symposia and Instructional Lectures: over fi fty sessions will convey the latest vital, need-to-know information necessary for modern-day practice. − Speciality Society Symposia: more than twenty speciality societies will be contributing cutting-edge and specialised information. − Comprehensive Orthopaedic Review Course: a novel teaching format allowing experienced surgeons to consolidate their knowledge and trainees to prepare successfully for board certifi cation examinations. − Satellite Symposia: industry-sponsored, with the latest “What’s in the pipeline?” news. A big thank you to all free paper presenters, scientifi c advisors, symposia organisers, speciality society contributors, instructional lecturers, case discussers and ExMEx participants for their tireless work and enthusiastic commitment. Your combined efforts have allowed the EFORT Scientifi c Committee and its devoted staff to put together this wide-ranging programme dedicated to the training of all orthopaedic surgeons! We look forward to seeing you in Vienna. Servus!
