The Commodification of Witchcraft
Volume 14, Number 1 31 THE COMMODIFICATION OF WITCHCRAFT Douglas Ezzy University of Tasmania. The modern Witchcraft movement began in small family-like groups. Increasing popularity and market forces have influenced both the practices and beliefs of contemporary Witchcraft. Three websites of prominent Australia Witches are analysed to identify the variations in the effects of commodification on Witchcraft. To varying degrees, commodified Witchcraft facilitates an ideology of consumption by attempting to manipulate people's decisions about their spiritual practices for the purpose of selling commodities such as books of spells and bottles of lotion. The websites of commodified Witchcraft play on people's sense of isolation and alienation, offering the hedonist consumption ofcommodities as solutions, substituting the purchase of commodities for engagement with personal self-discovery. These new forms of oppression need to be weighed against the freedom ofindividualism and new forms ofspirituality facilitated by consumerism. Introduction Contemporary Witchcraft (or Wicca) is a modem spirituality not typically organised as a formal religious institution, although there are a number of organisational loci of the modem Witchcraft movement (Luhrmann, 1989; York, 1995; Hume, 1997; Berger, 1999; Hutton, 1999; Griffin, 2000; Greenwood, 2000). The beliefs of contemporary Witchcraft are elegantly described on one of the websites analysed below: Wicca is a Pagan religion meaning that Wiccans feel love for and a connection with nature and see it as sacred. Wiccans worship two early forms of deity, the Great Mother Goddess and her consort, the Horned God, but is Goddess centred and welcomes men and women. Wiccans celebrate eight religious festivals a year, called Sabbats and these are based on the passing of the seasons and agricultural cycles, like the sowing and harvesting of crops, and astronomical events, like the solstices and equinoxes .. -

Indonesia e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The absence of borders increases the consciousness on the larger access which creates global dependency in many ways such as trades, traveling, tourism, and culture information and creates borderless countries. Lyman (2000) explains that the movement and the influence of globalization are triggered by many factors such as the economic expansion in the form of massive industrialization and the development of science, technology, and communication. The beauty of globalization is the ability to force people to be creative and innovative in creating something beneficial. Culture are wrapped and formed then exposed, which later called as “exporting culture” or in the more popular form, it is called as commodification. The boom of Korean popular culture in all over Asian countries has increased starting in 2000 it moves forward to rule all over Asia (Hyejung: 2007). The rise of Korean Popular culture through globalization triggers a favorable environment to the new commodities allowing interaction between nations. K-Pop Global expansion is through three stages “Competence” or Hard Power, “Attraction” or Soft Power and last but not least Criticism in order to be able to continue or to have a sustainable career in global industries many things should be taken including “facelift”. Abstract The existing research has shown that green consumption attitude is a good predictor of the green consumption behavior, while in the meantime some study has pointed out that there is no significant relationship between the green consumption attitude and behavior. In reality, many consumers think green consumption behavior is "easier said than done". Aiming to reveal the relationship between green consumption attitude and behavior, this study probed the process of attitude-behavior transformation from two dimensions, perceived control, and perceived difficulty. We distributed 200 questionnaires and reclaimed 189 valid questionnaires. Through SPSS and LISREL data analysis, the result showed that perceived control and perceived difficulty moderated this green consumption attitude-behavior process. Both low perceived control (vs. high perceived control) and high perceived difficulty (vs. low perceived difficulty) will weaken the connection between green consumption attitude and green consumption behavior. This paper offers inspiration to both Chinese government and enterprises to raise Chinese consumers’ perceived control as well as lowering their perceived difficulty of green consumption. Please check with authors before quoting from or referencing this paper. Abstract DIY is an analytically complex phenomenon. It can simultaneously figure as leisure and work, and as consumption (of materials and tools) and production (of changes to the home). Analysis of the technology and practice of DIY allows us to engage with significant, but relatively unexplored themes that are nonetheless important for theorising consumption. This paper focuses on three such themes. First, consideration of motivations to undertake DIY projects highlights the extent to which consumption practices emerge from and are conditioned not only by cultural expectations, identity, aspirations and the market, but also by the material and practical contexts of everyday life. Secondly, exploration of the array of tools and materials brought together to realise DIY projects presents specific challenges for understanding how consumer goods come to count as useful. Thirdly, we explore the role of competence in accomplishing a DIY project, highlighting how competences are distributed between user and products, how developments in this area shape the realm of DIY consumption, bringing new projects within the reach of amateurs and making traditional tasks easier and faster. We conclude by reflecting on the significance of our DIY analysis for theories of ‘ordinary’ consumption. Green consumption, as the final link of consumer behavior, can help green production activities make a real difference and achieve sustainable development. Based on the Agentic–Communal Model, this paper explores the relationship between power and green consumption through three experiments. The results showed that low-power (vs. high-power) consumers, who are more dependent on others, are likely to facilitate and encourage a communal orientation towards one’s environment. These consumers pay more attention to others and may have a preference for green consumption. Self-concern plays a mediating role in this mechanism. However, when individuals have a strong impression management motivation, the difference in their willingness toward green consumption will disappear. In other words, both lower-power and high-power consumers are more willing to purchase green products. This paper helps to deepen the understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying green consumption and also provides practical implications for firms’ green marketing strategies. What distinguishes them is their high level of knowledge, motivation, and reflection on climate change topics, as intended by many downstream policy interventions targeting individual consumption behavior. Based on 31 problem-centered interviews with PEBEXs, we found two general coping strategies: contributing to maximizing sustainable consumption and accommodating to the minimization of perceived tension. These coping strategies offer a promising source of information for individuals in general on how to drive personal consumption behavior in more sustainable directions and how to deal with accompanying barriers and tensions. Because coping strategies can be trained, the introduced strategies can support the design of interventions targeting individual consumption decisions. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of accompanying upstream interventions, such as structural changes, to support individual behavior changes. So, I’m basically going to be talking about how much you don’t need things, and it’s the exact same thing that everyone else is doing, except I’m being extreme in the other way’. So states Kimberly Clark in her first ‘anti-haul’ video (2015), a YouTube vlog in which she lists beauty products that she is ‘not gonna buy’.i Since widely imitated by other beauty YouTube vloggers, the anti-haul vlog is a deliberate attempt to resist the celebration of beauty consumption in beauty ‘influencer’ social media culture. Anti- haul vloggers have much in common with other ethical or anti-consumer lifestyle experts (Meissner, 2019) and the growing ranks of online ‘environmental influencers’ (Heathman, 2019). These influencers play an important intermediary function, where complex ethical questions are broken down into manageable and rewarding tasks, projects or challenges (Haider, 2016: p.484; Joosse and Brydges, 2018: p.697). -

Learn about local agriculture—visit farmers markets, call your Cooperative Extension office, and find out what organizations work with farmers in your area. See the Resources section of this Guide for suggestions on how to find farmers near you. 3. Visit each other—tour farms and invite farmers to your facility to gain better insight into how you can work together. 4. Work through your existing distributors—ask if they offer any local products and encourage them to do so or to do more. 5. Be patient—buying local can be rewarding yet challenging, so be flexible and set realistic expectations and goals. 6. Advertise—let your customers know what your are doing by labeling foods that come from local farms and tell stories about the products and their producers. A Guide to Serving Local Food on Your Menu1 INTRODUCTION The demand for fresh, local food has been growing rapidly in recent years, spurred by celebrity chefs, farmers’ markets, Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaigns, and other initiatives. Institutions of various kinds have begun to respond to this demand. In one well known example, the media attention received by the local foods project begun in one dining hall at Yale University has made other schools aware that serving fresh, local food can give them a competitive edge when recruiting students. As a result, many colleges and universities across the country have begun to feature their use of local foods.
