Identity in the Early Fiction of Alan Paton, 1922-1935 D N R IDENTITY IN THE EARLY FICTION OF ALAN PATON, 1922-1935 D N R LEVEY Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at the North-West University Promoter: Dr C A Woeber Co-promoter: Prof. A M de Lange MAY 2007 POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS ABSTRACT The thesis represents an attempt, within the broad field of religion and literature and of identity studies, to read the early unpublished fiction of Alan Paton, dating from approximately 1922 (the end of his student days) to 1935 (when he became Principal of Diepkloof Reformatory). It is pointed out that research into the interrelationship of literature and religion, while well-established in a number of countries, is lagging in South Africa, and it is believed that the present thesis is the first full-length work of its kind, at least as far as South African literature in English is concerned. The writer advances reasons for his explicitly religious and hermeneutic approach to questions of human identity, as fo~.~ndin Paton especially, and focuses these on two particular areas: narrative identity, as propounded in the later work of Paul Ricoeur, and relational identity (to the other human being and to the Other, God), as theorised by Emmanuel Levinas in his later writing. In order to contextualise the study in Africa and in South Africa, brief attention is accorded to writers such as Soyinka, Mbiti and Mbembe and to current debates regarding white identity in South Africa. To lend a sense of histol-ical context, Paton's work is viewed against the backdrop of identity in colonial Natal. The overall approach adopted may be described as broadly, but critically, postmodernist. Paton's earliest, fragmentary novel, 'Ship of Truth' (1922-1923) is read in some detail; his second, and only complete early novel, 'Brother Death' (1930), is commented on in as much detail as its frequently rambling nature warrants. A chapter on shorter fiction discusses his short story 'Little Barbee' (1928?), his short story 'Calvin Doone' (1930), his third novel, 'John Her~ryDane' (1934), and a novel or novella, 'Secret for Seven' (1934). From all these readings it emerges that the Paton of his early fiction is markedly different from the Paton generally known: his concepts of human identity, of God and of religion, though earnest, are unformed and frequently ambivalent; his characterisation often stereotyped and wooden; his political views usually prejudiced and his stylistic and other techniques, though adequate in a young writer, highly repetitive. Various suggestions are made for future research: into South African literature from a religious perspective, into other aspects of Paton's works, and so forth. Daar word daarop gewys dat navorsing oor die onderlinge verhouding tussen die letterkunde en godsdiens in 'n aantal lande goed gevestig is, maar nog nie in Suid-Afl-ika veel aandag gekry het nie. Die skrywer meen dat hierdie proefskrif die eerste volskaalse studie in sy soort is, ten minste wat Suid-Afrikaanse letterkunde in Engels betref. Notes to Self is the fictional autobiography of my pseudonym, Ted Bonham. It has been assembled from textual fragments of differing lengths, including many that derive from found texts from both literary and non-literary sources. These fragments are written in a diverse range of styles and set in a variety of geographical locations and historical periods, from Neanderthal tribe story to contemporary lab report and from nineteenth century novel to amateur internet polemic. Taken together, these disparate textual fragments reveal Ted's life story. The narrative tells this story approximately chronologically, but within this broad structure fragments are also organised by associative and thematic principles more often discussed in relation to poetry or visual collage. The essay examines the assemblage composition of Notes to Self and its use of the fragment as a unit of composition. It uses analogies to collage and montage to extend critical discourse around the assemblage-text, helping to provide both a vocabulary for practitioners to discuss their work and the theoretical basis to defend it. It also examines how Notes to Self, as the notional autobiography of my pseudonym Ted Bonham, addresses themes of identity and self-narrative and how its fragmentary structure creatively explores and represents our experiences of consciousness and how we construct our narratives of selfhood.

D. Cornell University 2010 My dissertation focuses on unstable, chronically unpublished prose texts by three key 20th century prose writers, quasi-novelistic texts whose material instability indicates a deep discomfort with the establishment of narrative authority qua narrative violence. I argue that Franz Kafka, Robert Walser and Thomas Bernhard, radically refunctionalized the device of interpolated “character monologue,” turning characters' speech from a narrative function, into a site where a text can be rewritten from within. In the Bildungsroman tradition, extended oral interpolations serve as an engine for the expansion and exposition of the plotted work, deepening the epic narrative world and exhaustively presenting a perspective that will be incorporated into biographical trajectory. I locate an estrangement of this practice: moments when oral monologues of fictional interlocutors “overgrow,” becoming an interventionary force that doubles, disrupts and re-frames the narrative discourse out of which it first sprouted. In showing how the labor of ‘world-making’ is split and spread across different competing layers of these texts, my dissertation contributes to the study of the narrative phenomenon of metalepsis.

The casual Nabokov reader will certainly notice the leitmotifs of chess, light and color, lepidoptery and various word games; the more acute Nabokov scholar, however, will note a theme, at times obvious, at times latent, always pulsing beneath the surface of his stories. Operating as the life force of his literature, sometimes this particular theme becomes obvious to both readers and characters alike, for example when all of Krug’s emotional anguish is lifted at the end of Bend Sinister thanks to the epiphany that he is merely a character. Krug’s epiphany, the overriding concern of all of Nabokov’s work, is the concept of consciousness. In Speak, Memory Nabokov begins, “The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.”1 It is this mystery of the relatively brief moment of consciousness that is one’s life that so harasses and fascinates the author and so informs his writing. He continues, “Over and over again my mind has made colossal efforts to distinguish the faintest of 1 Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Spring/Summer 2010 (3:3/4) personal glimmers in the impersonal darkness on both sides of my life”1 and concedes, “Initially, I was unaware that time, so boundless at first blush, was a prison.”2 It was early in his own life that Nabokov came to this realization that life is a mere flickering of consciousness between the vast, dark voids at both ends of a human’s time on earth.

    “THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY”: PROFESSIONAL HISTORIANS AND POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY OF SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENTARY POLITICS, 1910-1990 FA Mouton1 Abstract Biography strengthens the historian’s attempts to decipher the behaviour of individuals and also provides a historical window on a certain era, contributing to our knowledge and understanding of the past. Biographical studies of those who were involved in parliamentary politics between 1910 and 1990, the prime ministers, presidents, cabinet ministers, party leaders, humble backbenchers and unsuccessful parliamentary candidates can help to explain why the white minority, after decades of acquiescing the abuse of South Africa’s limited democratic tradition, decided to peacefully surrender its political power. And yet, despite the proven value of political biography in the United States and Britain, the library shelves of South African universities are bare of biographies on pre-1990 parliamentary politicians by professional historians. This article explains the reasons for this dearth of biographies, as well as the reasons why it is essential for professional historians to write them and concludes with a recommendation on how such biographies should be written. 1. INTRODUCTION By deciphering the behaviour of individuals, providing in the process a historical window on societies of the past, the historian as biographer plays a crucial role to convey knowledge and understanding of our history to the reading public. Biographical studies of the lives and careers of parliamentary politicians between 1910 and 1990 are for example essential to comprehend South African history in the twentieth century. And yet, despite the internationally proven value of biography, the library shelves of South African universities are bare of biographies by professional historians on pre-1990 parliamentary history.

    Alan Paton’s unpublished fiction (1922- 1934): an initial appraisal David Levey Department of English Studies UNISA PRETORIA E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Alan Paton’s unpublished fiction (1922-1934): an initial appraisal This article considers selected issues in the early fiction of Alan Paton, which is in manuscript form: three novels or parts of novels, namely, “Ship of Truth” (1922-1923), “Brother Death” (1930), “John Henry Dane” (1934b), the novel/novella “Secret for seven” (1934d), and the short stories “Little Barbee”, (1928?) and “Calvin Doone” (1930a). Attention is given to the first novel. A summary of the findings follows: even though Paton’s longer unpublished fiction is religiously earnest and at times rhetorically effective, it is simplistic and tends to perpetuate the white, English-speaking patriarchal hegemony of Natal, rather than offer any sustained critique of it. These works are set against the background of the Natal Midlands in the 1920s and 1930s. The shorter fiction is slightly different in nature. Stoker All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis Hemingway’s Mythical Method: Implications of Dante Allusion in In Our Time The widely accepted assessment of Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time is that the text’s fragmentary form belies a complex but cohesive narrative wholeness. Missing from the critical record, however, is an adequate account of In Our Time’s use of what T.S. Eliot termed “the mythical method.” Using a palimpsestic system of indirect allusion, Hemingway’s fragmentary novel constructs an overarching pattern of reference to the journey of Dante’s pilgrim through Hell and Purgatory in the Divine Comedy. Hemingway’s use of this mythical method not only provides his novel a more concrete narrative framing device than its critics have recognized, but also reflects new dimensions of the influence Dante, Eliot, and Ezra Pound exerted on Hemingway’s earliest work. In particular, similarities between In Our Time and Pound’s Draft of XVI Cantos (both published in 1925), combined with Pound’s well-documented mentorship of Hemingway, suggest Pound may have been a primary source of influence on Hemingway’s apprehension of and engagement with Dante and the epic tradition he represents.
