Status of the Umbelliferae ssp. in Russia Tatiana Khmelinskaya Olga Zvereva Anna Artemyeva The collection status The formation of Russian Umbelliferae collection had begun in 1923 after N.I.Vavilov visit West-European countries, USA and Canada (1921- 1922), from the seed samples shipped by breeding companies of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria. Russian resources were registered in VIR collection through All-Russian agricultural exhibition. The local landraces were collected during collection missions in Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Turkey, etc. In 1926 VIR scientists started to study the collection. From 1928 the new expeditions were arranged to Mediterranean countries, Ethiopia, and Western China by Vavilov, to India by Markovich, to Minor Asia of Zhukovskiy, etc. , and also collection had started to grow by exchange of material with different Institutes and companies. Now VIR Genebank contains genetic resources of different status from more than 90 countries, includes wild species, landraces, old and advanced cultivars, hybrids F1, breeding materials . Umbelliferae collections are divided into two parts: constant (base) catalogue and temporary catalogue. The constant catalogue includes landraces and breeding cultivars with sufficient quantity of seeds in accession. All accessions of constant catalogue are documented for computerized passport data. The temporary catalogue includes the hybrids F1, breeding materials and the samples with insufficient quantity of seeds. These latter cultivars need to -

Dolores Bargues1*, Patricio Artigas1, Rene Angles2, David Osca1, Pamela Duran1, Paola Buchon3, R. Karina Gonzales‑Pomar3, Julio Pinto‑Mendieta3 and Santiago Mas‑Coma1 Abstract Background: Fascioliasis is a snail‑borne zoonotic trematodiasis emerging due to climate changes, anthropogenic environment modifcations, and livestock movements. Many areas where Fasciola hepatica is endemic in humans have been described in Latin America altitude areas. Highest prevalences and intensities were reported from four provinces of the northern Bolivian Altiplano, where preventive chemotherapy is ongoing. New strategies are now incorporated to decrease infection/re‑infection risk, assessment of human infection sources to enable efcient prevention measures, and additionally a One Health initiative in a selected zone. Subsequent extension of these pilot interventions to the remaining Altiplano is key. Methods: To verify reproducibility throughout, 133 specimens from 25 lymnaeid populations representative of the whole Altiplano, and 11 used for population dynamics studies, were analyzed by rDNA ITS2 and ITS1 and mtDNA cox1 and 16S sequencing to assess their classifcation, variability and geographical spread. Results: Lymnaeid populations proved to belong to a monomorphic group, Galba truncatula. Only a single cox1 mutation was found in a local population. Two cox1 haplotypes were new. Comparisons of transmission foci data from the 1990’s with those of 2018 demonstrated an endemic area expansion. -

LENGUA X: AN ANDEAN PUZZLE 1 MATTHIAS PACHE LEIDEN UNIVERSITY In the south-central Andes, several researchers have documented series of numerical terms that some have attributed to a hitherto unknown language: Lengua X. Indeed, they are difficult to link, as a whole, with numerical series from the known languages of the area. This paper discusses the available information on these series and attempts to trace their origin. It is difficult to argue that they are the remnants of a single, vanished language. Instead, it is argued that Lengua X numbers for ‘one’ and ‘two’ originate in Aymara, a language from the highlands, whereas terms for ‘three’ to ‘five’ originate in Mosetén, a language from the eastern foothills. Additional parallels with Uru-Chipayan, Quechua, and Aymara (terms from ‘six’ to ‘ten’) suggest that Lengua X numbers reflect a unique and complex situation of language contact in the south-central Andes. Since the colonial period, four indigenous language groups have been associated with the south-central Andes: Quechua, Ay- mara, Uru-Chipayan, and Puquina (e.g., Bouysse-Cassagne 1975; Adelaar 2004). Since the late nineteenth century, however, several researchers (e.g., Posnansky 1938; Vellard 1967) have come across words in the Bolivian highlands for numbers that seem to belong to a different language: Lengua X, as it was called by Ibarra Grasso (1982:15, 97). This paper presents and discusses Lengua X numerical terms, addressing the question of their origin. Table 1 illustrates the first four numbers of Lengua X, together with their counterparts in Aymara, Chipaya (Uru-Chipayan), Bolivian Quechua, and Puquina. -

Index Seminum 2015 List of seeds for exchange Glasgow Botanic Gardens 730 Great Western Road Glasgow, G12 OUE Scotland, United Kingdom History of Glasgow Botanic Gardens The Botanic Gardens were founded on an 8-acre site at the West End of Sauchiehall Street at Sandyford in 1817. This was through the initiative of Thomas Hopkirk of Dalbeth who gave his own plant collection to form the nucleus of the new garden. It was run by the Royal Botanical Institution of Glasgow and an agreement was reached with Glasgow University to provide facilities for teaching, including supply of plants for botanical and medical classes. Professor William J. Hooker, Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow (1820-41), took an active part in the development of the Gardens, which became well known in botanical circles throughout the world. The early success led to expansion and the purchase of the present site, at Kelvinside, in 1842. At the time entry was mainly restricted to members of the Royal Botanical Institution and their friends although later the public were admitted on selected days for the princely sum of one penny. The Kibble Palace which houses the national tree fern collection was originally a private conservatory located at Coulport by Loch Long. It was moved to its present site in 1873 and originally used as a concert venue and meeting place, hosting speakers such as Prime Ministers Disraeli and Gladstone. Increasing financial difficulties led to the Gardens being taken over by the then Glasgow Corporation in 1891 on condition they continued as a Botanic Garden and maintained links with the University. -

Abstract Abstract Current theory suggests that common property regimes, predicated on the community concept, are effective institutions for wildlife management. This thesis uses community-based conservation of vicuña in the Bolivian highlands as a case study to re-examine this theory. Vicuña is a wild South American camelid living in the high Andes. Its fibre is highly valued in international markets, and trade of vicuña fibre is controlled and regulated by an international policy framework. Different vicuña management systems have been developed to obtain fibre from live- shorn designated vicuña populations. This thesis analyses whether the Bolivian case study meets three key criteria for effective common property resource management: appropriate partnerships across scale exist; supportive local-level collective action institutions can be identified; and deriving meaningful benefits from conservation is possible. This thesis adopts a qualitative approach for the collection and analysis of empirical data. Data was collected from 2001 to 2003 at different levels of governance in Bolivia, using a combination of ethnographic techniques, and methods of triangulation. Community-level research was undertaken in Mauri-Desaguadero and Lipez-Chichas fieldwork sites. -
Colonial Garden Plants
COLONIAL GARD~J~ PLANTS I Flowers Before 1700 The following plants are listed according to the names most commonly used during the colonial period. The botanical name follows for accurate identification. The common name was listed first because many of the people using these lists will have access to or be familiar with that name rather than the botanical name. The botanical names are according to Bailey’s Hortus Second and The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture (3, 4). They are not the botanical names used during the colonial period for many of them have changed drastically. We have been very cautious concerning the interpretation of names to see that accuracy is maintained. By using several references spanning almost two hundred years (1, 3, 32, 35) we were able to interpret accurately the names of certain plants. For example, in the earliest works (32, 35), Lark’s Heel is used for Larkspur, also Delphinium. Then in later works the name Larkspur appears with the former in parenthesis. Similarly, the name "Emanies" appears frequently in the earliest books. Finally, one of them (35) lists the name Anemones as a synonym. Some of the names are amusing: "Issop" for Hyssop, "Pum- pions" for Pumpkins, "Mushmillions" for Muskmellons, "Isquou- terquashes" for Squashes, "Cowslips" for Primroses, "Daffadown dillies" for Daffodils. Other names are confusing. Bachelors Button was the name used for Gomphrena globosa, not for Centaurea cyanis as we use it today. Similarly, in the earliest literature, "Marygold" was used for Calendula. Later we begin to see "Pot Marygold" and "Calen- dula" for Calendula, and "Marygold" is reserved for Marigolds. -

The goal of the present study was to conduct a mor- phological and molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Cercospora spp. occurring on various plants growing in Northern Thailand, an area with a tropical savannah climate, and a rich diversity of vascular plants. Sixty Cercospora isolates were collected from 29 host species (representing 16 plant families). Partial nucleotide sequence data for two gene loci (ITS and cmdA), were generated for all isolates. Results from this study indicate that members of the genus Cercospora vary regarding host specificity, with some taxa having wide host ranges, and others being host-specific. Based on cultural, morphological and phylogenetic data, four new species of Cercospora could be identified: C. -

Breeding for disease resistance is the preferred strategy of managing both diseases. The continued emergence of new races of Pt and Pst requires a constant search for new sources of resistance. Winter wheat accessions were evaluated at seedling stage in the greenhouse with races of Pt and Pst that are predominant in the North Central US. Association mapping approach was performed on landrace accessions to identify new or underutilized sources of resistance to Pt and Pst. The majority of the accessions were susceptible to all the five races of Pt and one race of Pst. Association mapping studies identified 29 and two SNP markers associated with seedling resistance to leaf rust and stripe rust, respectively.
