In 2010, the Cold Case Unit submitted evidence to Orchid Cellmark, a private laboratory in , for testing. Orchid Cellmark confirmed evidence located on Ms. Siegrist contained Alfredo Prieto’s DNA. In 2009, The National Institute of Justice awarded the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Cold Case Unit with a grant to aid in the testing of DNA evidence in unsolved homicides. The solving of this cold case homicide is based off of Prieto’s DNA being found on evidence left at the original 1990 crime scene. Charges will be requested against Alfredo Prieto in this case with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. It is not known when the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office will reach a decision on the filing of this case.

Alfredo Prieto has a history of sexual assaults and murder. He has been linked to at least nine and four sexual assaults. In one of the cases, Prieto was working with three other suspects. In the case of Siegrist and Gianuzzi, based on evidence at the scene, it is likely that Prieto had been working with one or two other suspects. Riverside County Sheriff’s homicide investigators are asking that anyone with information on other suspects in this case to contact Investigator John Powers at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department – Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.

The other two women survived the knife assault and were able to identify all three suspects. All three suspects were convicted on this case. Prieto was sentenced to death.

Since it has been twenty years since the homicides occurred, Cold Case investigators met with family members of Stacey Siegrist and Anthony Gianuzzi. During these meetings, investigators shared information about the crime scenes and Alfredo Prieto. The purpose of the meetings were to bring closure to the families and to advise them of pending media interest.

This was the fourth case solved by the Cold Case Unit since being awarded the grant. Currently, the Cold Case Unit is examining 84 Unsolved Homicide cases with potential DNA evidence. Thus far, twenty-six cases have yielded suspect DNA, four have been solved, fifteen have been entered into CODIS (a national DNA database), and seven need further work prior to CODIS entry.
