These students usually have options to attend many colleges, so I try to explain the distinctive qualities of Clemson. In those conversations, I always tell them about the Clemson Family. Sometimes the idea that a large university could be a “family” is met with skepticism. But Feb. 25, 2004, proved that the Clemson Family is not just an empty phrase. On that date, a fire destroyed an off-campus apartment complex and left more than 100 students homeless.

On both a world-wide scale and on the local level, friendly faces and familiar institutions have faded from proximity into the realm of fond (and often, not so fond) memory. It is not the purpose of this special edition of The Tiger to reflect on the events in Europe or the crisis in the Persian Gulf or even to deal with issues which have affected change on our nation. Instead, this issue will concentrate on those matters which have most directly impacted Clemson University and the surrounding community. This year may prove to have an awesome legacy that will endure for generations to come. For this reason, we bid farewell to 1990 not with nostalgia or melancholy, but with a firm determination to meet the challenges of the coming year. THE CLEMSON EXPERIMENTAL FOREST CULTURAL AND HISTORIC RESOURCES A CRONOLOGICAL SUMMARY AND GUIDELINES FOR FURTHER PROTECTION MAINTENANCE AND ENHANCED EDUCATIONAL USE March 2013 Compiled by: Knight Cox, Manager, Clemson Experimental Forest John Garton, Resource Tech IV, Clemson Experimental Forest Will Hiott, Historian, Clemson University Ben Sill, Clemson University, Gen Engineering (retired) Introduction The Clemson Experimental Forest (CEF) contains an abundance and diversity of natural, Page | 2 cultural, and recreational resources. Many of these are worthy of special management, and are important educational items that increase the value of the CEF to Clemson University. This document provides an overview of some of the CEF’s major cultural resources and makes some recommendations regarding their educational uses. These resources relate to distinct periods of regional and US history, and are presented in chronological order based on these periods. It is hoped that this document, with its maps, will help create further interest in these resources among university classes, regional schools, civic groups, and the general public. While all the cultural resource sites mentioned in this document were visited during preparation, no new inventory searches were done. Existing written references, and discussions with interested and knowledgeable individuals, were the primary sources of information. Although references utilized are cited at the end of this document, two created by Clemson faculty and students are of special value and are also mentioned here. 1) In The Face Of Change: An Interpretive Prospectus For The Clemson Experimental Forest. 1977.
