We are delighted to present to you this year’s anthology of the shortlisted entries for the Young Muslim Writers Awards! This year’s entries were diverse and engaging, discussing everything from the challenges of lockdown and space adventures, to detective stories and the marvels of spiders. We hope you enjoy reading these extracts as much as we did, and that they inspire your writing and imagination. This year marks a milestone for us, as we celebrate our 10th Young Muslim Writers The Awards competition. To celebrate our anniversary, we held a series of events in the lead-up to the ceremony as part of the Young Muslim Writers Awards Festival. During one of the sessions, we caught up with past winners to learn more about their writing journey. We were heartened to hear about how they had gained confidence B le s s e d from having their voices praised and amplified through the competition – developing confidence is one of the primary goals we set out to achieve. We hope we can continue to inspire young wordsmiths to explore creative writing and to provide a Bakeries platform from which they can showcase their work. -
Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister
Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. Keywords: adaptation, encryption, Gentleman Jack, journals, lesbianism, Anne Lister, queer history, queer visibility, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, transcription. ***** Lister ought to tell her own story before anyone interpreted it for her. Hers is, after all, the truly authentic voice of the nineteenth century woman caught up in a dilemma not of her own making. She ought to be allowed to tell it as it was, from her own point of view. (Whitbread 1992: xii) The recent appearance of a woman given the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ in a show focused on a queer woman depicts a subject who writes her life into encrypted journals. -

The Position Is Looking Forward to Welcoming Into Its Lively, Talented and Active Family a Priest-In-Charge to Lead Us with New Vision to a Revival
All Saints’ Church, Halifax, The Position is looking forward to welcoming into its lively, talented and active family a priest-in-charge to lead us with new vision to a revival. Wordcloud of responses to a recent Congregational Survey asking which are the most important qualities expected of a new priest Page 2 The Prospects All Saints’ has spent some time learning, reflecting and praying on the theory of growth in terms of our relationships with God, with each other and with People Out There. There has been a certain amount of progress, particularly in discipleship so that a number of people have stepped forward to take up positions of responsibility with aptitude and enthusiasm. The pastoral care related to this activity is an important consideration going forward. There is great enthusiasm for continuing to develop discipleship; and we seek to grow in numbers, faith and finances with new leadership from an incoming priest-in-charge. Having spent much time and effort on developing a Welcome Garden, which should have been officially opened in May 2020, the church needs someone who can enthusiastically lead forward the detailed and widespread programme of events and projects a dedicated team has put in place. With this we hope to encourage the community into our precincts with an intention of leading them a step further into our church building and our church family. The enthusiasm and commitment shown over the past few years for the Welcome Garden Project and the keen interest in seeing it used, reveals an eagerness to reach out into the surrounding area. -
