Thesis an Autoethnography of Local Music Culture In THESIS AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHY OF LOCAL MUSIC CULTURE IN NORTHERN COLORADO Submitted by Joseph Andrew Schicke Department of English In partial fulfillments of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2011 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Sue Doe Carrie Lamanna James Banning ABSTRACT AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHY OF LOCAL MUSIC CULTURE IN NORTHERN COLORADO The following thesis investigates common ideologies as manifested in the rhetoric of local musicians, musician employers and musician advocates. I use an autoethnographic method in which I use the interview data of local music culture participants along with my own accounts of my experience as a local musician in order to come closer to locating and describing the experience of local music culture. Through constant comparative analysis of interview data, I located six problematic themes related to the rhetorics of the music community, musician recognition, musician identity, music as a leisure activity, musicians as workers, and musicians as part of a wider industry. I put forth the argument that these areas are of great importance in an understanding of the ways that rhetoric and ideology disempower local musicians. In addition, I argue for a more complex awareness of music ideology by introducing affect theory. This path started with bugging my parents to buy me a guitar, taking music lessons at the local music store, and long hours spent alone trying to figure out how my favorite musicians were making the sounds I admired. Forming bands with friends and musical acquaintances contributed to my musical development. It was a gratifying combination of work and fun, taking place within the comforting confines of suburbia and a supportive family structure. It also led to an adventurous and productive career in professional music later in life, which I still enjoy. Of course, as many professional musicians know, making a living from music can be difficult. This has led me to hold several side jobs at restaurants and corporate coffee shops and, most recently to pursue a graduate degree in English, with intentions of becoming an English teacher. My musical path is very much like that of many of my musical peers. It is that rare, problematic experience of finding exactly what one wants to do with their time on the planet, but discovering that such an experience does not enable one to keep an active cell phone, much less food to eat. The ability to earn a living wage is quite possibly the central concern of musicians, and I believe it has something to do with the way the musician has been discursively constructed in society. There is something noble and virtuous about committing one’s life to the pursuit of shaping sound into aesthetic forms which others can then interpret, yet with that respected position comes a kind of social isolation or marginalization. Cultural economist Jacques Attali wrote about the musician, saying, “If he is an outcast, he sees society in a political light. If accepted, he is its historian, the 1 reflection of its deepest values. He speaks of society and he speaks against it” (12). This ambivalent position surely is one element of the struggle that professional musicians go through when trying to maintain a professional identity. The seemingly contradictory values of creativity versus business, leisure versus work, and freedom versus conformity, for example, are constantly at play in a musician’s world. People who work and operate in more conventional circles often say that they are jealous of me because I get to do what I love, yet I doubt they are jealous of my economic situation, which is not unbearable, but certainly could be better. The ironic thing is that it is not just the public discourse which has contributed to this image of the musician, but also the discourse of the musicians themselves. I have always been interested in why musicians do what we do, and I have attempted to discover possible reasons through discussions with fellow musicians. Many of the ambiguities of a musician’s life may in fact seem like irrefutable facts, but I suggest that questioning those “facts” allows musicians to get closer to understanding how we have been discursively constructed in society. While this type of inquiry into music is a labor of love for me, it has the possibility to be more than that, so that is why I have written this thesis on the way musicians rhetorically position themselves in society. I identify with musicians on a level unlike any other group. I have that insider knowledge that most professional musicians have, which is the understanding that music is hard work. Of course, it’s not always hard, but that’s also a complicating factor. As a professional musician, you cannot see exactly what’s coming around the corner. It might be an under- attended performance, an over-served fan, inter-band conflict, or a month of no musical employment. But when

The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s.

Rothenberger, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2014 Technological advances have led to an increase in the collection of high-dimensional, nearly continuously sampled signals. Evolutionary correlations between such signals are salient to many studies, as they provide important information about associations between different dynamic processes and can be used to understand how these processes relate to larger com- plex mechanisms. Despite the large number of methods for analyzing functional data that have been explored in the past twenty-five years, there is a dearth of methods for analyzing functional correlations. This dissertation introduces new methods for addressing three ques- tions pertaining to functional correlations. First, we address the problem of estimating a single functional correlation by developing a smoothing spline estimator and accompanying bootstrap procedure for forming confidence intervals. Next, we consider the problem of test- ing the equivalence of two functional correlations from independent samples by developing a novel adaptive Neyman testing procedure. Lastly, we address the problem of testing the equivalence of two functional correlations from dependent samples by extending the adap- tive Neyman test to this more complicated setting, and by embedding the problem in a state-space framework to formulate a practical Kalman filter-based algorithm for its imple- mentation.

    The Devil in Robert Johnson: The Progression of the Delta Blues to Rock and Roll by Adam Compagna “I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees, I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees, Saw the Devil and begged for mercy, help me if you please --- Crearn, “Crossroads” With the emergence of rock and roll in the late nineteen fifties and early nineteen sixties, many different sounds and styles of music were being heard by the popular audience. These early rock musicians blended the current pop style with the non-mainstream rhythm and blues sound that was prevalent mainly in the African-American culture. Later on in the late sixties, especially during the British “invasion,” such bands as the Beatles, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, and the Yardbirds used this blues style and sound in their music and marketed it to a different generation. This blues music was very important to the evolution of rock and roll, but more importantly, where did this blues influence come from and why was it so important? The answer lies in the Mississippi Delta at the beginning of the twentieth century, down at the crossroads. From this southern section of America many important blues men, including Robert Johnson, got their start in the late nineteen twenties. A man who supposedly sold his soul to the Devil for the ability to play the guitar, Robert Johnson was a main influence on early rock musicians not only for his stylistic guitar playing but also for his poetic lyrics. 1 An important factor in the creation of the genre of the Delta blues is the era that these blues men came from.

Given the motion trajectories of human agents and inanimate objects within a room, the system attempts to characterize how each agent moves in response to the locations of the others in the room – towards an object, say, and away from the other agent. Each of these calculations leads to an estimate of the agent’s current intentional state. Taken together with the other agents in the room, and paying particular attention to the moments when the various agents’ states change, the system can construct a coherent account of the action similar to the stories humans tell.
