Samples were obtained from the main River Thames, tributaries, standing waters and the London Docks. The samples were examined for Total Coliforms and Escherichia coli to give a measure of faecal contamination. The results were compared with the standards given in E.C. Directive 76/I6O/EEC (Concerning the quality of bathing water). In general, coliform levels in river waters were higher than those in standing waters. At present, there are three EC Designated bathing areas in the River Thames catchment, none of which are situated on freshwaters. Compliance data calculated in this report is intended for comparison with the EC Directive only and is not statutory. Most sites sampled complied at least intermittently with the E.C. Imperative levels for both Total Coliforms and E.coli.

  • HANCOCK's HALF HOUR COLLECTIBLES Notes To
HANCOCK’S HALF HOUR COLLECTIBLES Notes to Accompany Volume 3 All photographs copyright (C) BBC (unless otherwise stated) The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society is delighted to have given its support to the production of this new and unique series concerning the lost works of Tony Hancock. Tony Hancock: BBC Publicity Shot for Hancock’s Half Hour, November 1956 The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) Since its creation in 1976, the THAS has dedicated itself to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock and, more crucially, to finding his broadcasts that were missing from the archives. Over the decades, these efforts have yielded a wealth of material, most notably lost episodes of his most beloved work on Hancock’s Half Hour for both television and radio. Many of these have now been located and returned to the BBC; some feature in this special series of Collectibles, now into 1 its third volume. However, many still remain lost at this time. In addition, our efforts have found other material – shows recorded before Hancock became a household name – from series such as Calling All Forces, Variety Bandbox and Star Bill. Again, examples of these can be found in this series. In the previous volumes, there was an extensive analysis of missing recordings from Hancock’s radio career, and, as ever, we remain hopeful that some of these recordings will emerge from private collections or, perhaps, the archives of the BBC or other institutions. In these notes, we will focus on a number of missing recordings and shows outside the ‘core’ work Hancock did on his eponymous series and those that preceded it.

  • City Branding: Part 2: Observation Towers Worldwide Architectural Icons Make Cities Famous
City Branding: Part 2: Observation Towers Worldwide Architectural Icons Make Cities Famous What’s Your City’s Claim to Fame? By Jeff Coy, ISHC Paris was the world’s most-visited city in 2010 with 15.1 million international arrivals, according to the World Tourism Organization, followed by London and New York City. What’s Paris got that your city hasn’t got? Is it the nickname the City of Love? Is it the slogan Liberty Started Here or the idea that Life is an Art with images of famous artists like Monet, Modigliani, Dali, da Vinci, Picasso, Braque and Klee? Is it the Cole Porter song, I Love Paris, sung by Frank Sinatra? Is it the movie American in Paris? Is it the fact that Paris has numerous architectural icons that sum up the city’s identity and image --- the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, Notre Dame Cathedral, Moulin Rouge and Palace of Versailles? Do cities need icons, songs, slogans and nicknames to become famous? Or do famous cities simply attract more attention from architects, artists, wordsmiths and ad agencies? Certainly, having an architectural icon, such as the Eiffel Tower, built in 1889, put Paris on the world map. But all these other things were added to make the identity and image. As a result, international tourists spent $46.3 billion in France in 2010. What’s your city’s claim to fame? Does it have an architectural icon? World’s Most Famous City Icons Beyond nicknames, slogans and songs, some cities are fortunate to have an architectural icon that is immediately recognized by almost everyone worldwide.

  • Diamond Jubilee Civic Honours Competition Entry by Goole
DIAMOND JUBILEE CIVIC HONOURS COMPETITION ENTRY BY GOOLE TOWN COUNCIL MAY 25 TH 2011. GOOLE’S BID FOR CITY STATUS INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF GOOLE The word Goole is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘outlet to a river'. Goole did not exist until the early 1800's. Until then there were small farming villages nearby at Hook, Airmyn, Howden and a few houses where Old Goole is now situated. The rural past is reflected in some of the street names such as Westfield and Marshfield. In 633 AD the area was the site of the Battle of Hatfield in which the powerful Northumbrian King called Edwin was defeated by Penda, King of the Mercians (the midlands). The king's head was laid in a small chapel in York which was later to become the site of York Minster. In later centuries Hatfield became the site of a manor and a famous Bishop of Durham called Thomas Hatfield was born there. His tomb lies below the bishops' throne in Durham Cathedral. For most of its history the land surrounding Hatfield known as Hatfield Chase was a swampy, fenland area and stretched far into Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. The history of Goole really begins when a Dutch Engineer Cornelius Vermuyden diverted the river Don by 10 miles to make it flow into the River Ouse rather than the River Trent. This was done at the request of the King who liked to go hunting on Hatfield Chase near Doncaster and was frustrated by the land always flooding. This allowed the land around Goole to become more habitable.

First of all, Michael, I would like to ask you if you are in agreement for this interview to be used for the British Library Theatre Project and for future generations to learn about Variety Theatre. MG: Absolutely. Very happy. SB: Well, first of all, I would like to ask you….Where were you born and brought up? MG: I was born in London in 1943. I was brought up in London. We lived for a short time in Bournemouth at the end of the war, but mostly in London. SB: Oh right. And what I wanted to ask you was… what were your earliest recollections of you coming from a show business family? MG: From a very, very early age I can remember events that I couldn’t place the date of but clearly when I was four, five or six I can remember Richard Tauber, the great tenor, coming to tea with Uncle Bernie and Auntie Carol, as I called them and falling through the deck chair in the garden of the house.
