Email : [email protected] Work Hard - Be Nice - No Excuses Wall Mural Before half term the Creative Director and their team from Dulux paints came into school to work with a selection of students in the art department to design a wall mural for outside the restaurant. This was painted over half term by a team of interns using donated leftover paint that would have otherwise gone to landfill. Half of us in the UK are hoarding between four to twenty tins of unused paints from previous DIY jobs. Rather than let them gather dust, Dulux created a campaign designed to help the paint to be passed it on to those who need it. The results are amazing. The area has definitely been transformed through colour and the students and teachers love it . Well done to Malcolm, Honorata, Georgia, Ibrahim, Eunice, Aaiza, Shaan, Wiktoria and Gabrielle who were involved in the design. No portion of this article may be republished without written permission from the authors. www.NewEnglandRecipes.org History and Origins of Birthday Cakes & Candles The tradition of celebrating a person’s birthday with a birthday cake and lit candles originated in 18 th century Germany. In 1746, Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf of Marienborn Germany celebrated his birthday. Andrew Frey, one of the guests, gave a detailed account of the party: “… the Houses to be illuminated on that day, which was accordingly done. They fetch Waggons full of Boughs, and with them covered the whole inside of the Count’s Hall, which is a hundred feet long, and forty wide … that it looked like an Arbour, and also hung up three brass Chandeliers, each of seven candles. In it also are four Pillars which were hung full of Lights spirally disposed. Wooden Letters above two Feet long were made to form the Name of LUDWIG VON ZINZENDORF, and these being gilded with Gold, were fixed to the Wall amidst a Blaze of Lights. The seats were covered with fine Linen set of with very sightly Ribbons. A Table also was made, representing the initial Letters of the Name of the Person who was the Subject of the Festival; there was a Cake as large as any Oven could be found to bake it, and Holes made in the Cake according to the Years of the Person’s Age, every one having a Candle stuck into it, and one in the Middle; the Outside of the Court was adorned with Festoons and foliage …” [Frey, 1753: 15] In Germany, children’s as well adults’ birthdays were also celebrated with birthday cakes. -

From Grandma's Kitchen Recipes Gluten Free Lavender and Coconut Jam Chocolate Brownies 3 Vanilla Coconut Ice 5 Drop Cookies 7 Gluten Free Popping Candy Coconut Roughs 9 Banana Cake 12 Hedgehog 14 Savoury Scone Honey Joys 18 Lemonade Scones 21 Pinwheels 16 Gluten Free White Chocolate & Rum Balls 25 Mini Fruitcake 23 Raspberry Rocky Road 27 2 Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies Difficulty: Easy preparation Preparation: 8 mins Cooking: 30 mins Makes: 15 squares Ingredients • 1 cup gluten free • 1 tsp vanilla essence self raising flour • 2 eggs • ½ cup rice flour • 2 tblsp water • 1 cup brown sugar • 100g Copha, melted • ½ cup cocoa powder • Icing sugar or drinking • 1 cup dark chocolate bits chocolate to dust • ½ cup walnuts (optional) TIP: Rice flour may be replaced with chestnut or soy flour. Walnuts may be replaced with chopped roasted hazelnuts. 3 Method Assembly 1. Pre-heat oven to 170˚C. Once brownies have cooled, cut into squares using a sharp knife and dust with icing sugar 2. Grease and line a 30 x 15cm slab tin. or drinking chocolate. 3. In a large bowl combine the flour, brown sugar, cocoa powder, choc bits and walnuts. Mix thoroughly and make a well in the centre. 4. Whisk together the vanilla, eggs and water, and then pour the mixture onto the dry ingredients. 5. Pour the melted Copha into bowl and mix all ingredients together until just combined. Do not over mix. 6. Spoon mixture into the greased and lined baking pan and smooth the surface. 7. Bake the brownies in the pre-heated oven at 170˚C for 30 minutes. -
