Title: C2 - ‘Developing fundamental movement skills in children – Should youth coaches adopt an isolated or an integrated approach?’ – Dr Swarup Mukherjee, NIE (PESS)

Session Fundamental motor skills (FMS) provide the foundation for sports- Synopsis: specific refined movement abilities that facilitates physically active behaviour through increased participation in both informal and formal play and sports activities. However, acquiring FMS is developmentally sequenced and is contingent upon a wide range of internal and external factors related to biological, psychological, social, behavioural, cognitive and motivational domains. Typically, priority is given to developing FMS in early childhood years with repeated practice of isolated movements performed in a coordinated pattern, and FMS proficiency is measured essentially in the form of intrinsic movement dynamics of a single successful movement pattern. However, our intrinsic dynamics are partly context-specific, even at the formative stages of development. Therefore, while coaching for developing FMS, it is both pedagogically and developmentally purposeful to equally focus on the relational dynamics of motor skills by including the individual- environment interface and the interactive dynamics of skilled movement.

This session will be a combination of presentation and activity- based approach emphasizing the concept of relational dynamics while developing FMS in children.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:  Understand the intrinsic, individual and interactive level of developing fundamental movement skills in children  Understand the non-linear, constraints-led and self-organising pattern dynamics of fundamental movement during games  Have deeper insights on the relational dynamics involved in developing and observing fundamental movement and game skills in children

Session In this session, we will focus on some key principles for delivering Synopsis: difficult messages without damaging relationships. Leadership requires us to have the courage and the skill to speak directly. We will concentrate on developing the language that gets this done. During the session, you will have an opportunity to work with other participants in developing your language and in practicing these conversations.

At the end of the session, participants will be better able to

 Open up a difficult conversation by establishing the necessary mutuality.  Prepare for these situations by connecting to your personal courage and key values.  Gather and present FAST data to make your case.  Intervene in a timely way in a conversation that is going off track.  Handle emotional ‘ambushes’
