o The Black Caucus was unable to muster more than 2 or 3 members in the morning of Monday, 3 December. Michael Doyle and I agree that you should not meet them under this circumstance - some other time. This gives you open time to rest, read and work as you wish. ^

o Ambassador Holbrooke has changed his plan and must return on a later flight.

SUBJECT: Official Visit to Washington, D.C. - 2-3 December 2001

Enclosed, for your approval, is the programme for the events you"*will be attending in Washington, D.C. on 2-3 December.

1. The Kennedy Center Honors - Sunday, 2 December 2001 (Black Tie):

The Honors Gala begins at the Kennedy Center Opera House at 7:15 p.m.. Mrs. Annan j and you will be seated directly in front of Mr. & Mrs. James Wolfensohn and Senator and // Mrs. Edward Kennedy - two rows behind Secretary of State Powell.

At around 9:00 p.m., the beginning of the intermission, you will be taken backstage while Mrs. Annan remains with the audience. After the intermission there is a 10-minute ballet piece followed by a tribute by Marilyn Home to Luciano Pavarotti - a 5-minute biographical film of Mr. Pavarotti will be shown. You will then be introduced by Walter Cronkite and after you speak you will exit the stage. At the end of the 10 minutes musical tribute to Mr. Pavarotti you will return to the stage with Marilyn Home and the singers to applaud Mr. Pavarotti. You will then be escorted back to your seat.

The performance will end at approximately 10:15 p.m. and you will be free to leave.

2. 2001 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding Ceremony Monday, 3 December 2001
