During a survey of helminth parasites of the brown ground snake, Atractus major Boulenger, 1894 (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) from Moyobamba, region of San Martin (northeastern Peru), a new species of Glossidiella Travassos, 1927 (Plagiorchiida: Plagiorchiidae) was found and is described herein based on morphological and ultrastructural data. The digeneans found in the lung were measured and drawings were made with a drawing tube. The ultrastructure was studied using scanning electron microscope. Glossidiella peruensis sp. nov. is easily distinguished from the type- and only species of the genus, Glossidiella ornata Travassos, 1927, by having an oblong cirrus sac (claviform in G. -

Principal Investigator: Lori Tolley-Jordan, Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex includes: Wheeler, Sauta Cave, Fern Cave, Mountain Longleaf, Cahaba, and Watercress Darter Refuges that provide freshwater habitat for many rare, endangered, endemic, or migratory species of animals. To date, no systematic, baseline surveys of freshwater snails have been conducted in these refuges. Documenting the diversity of freshwater snails in this complex is important as many snails are the primary intermediate hosts of flatworm parasites (Trematoda: Digenea), whose infection in subsequent aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates may lead to their impaired health. In Fall 2015 and Summer 2016, snails were collected from a variety of aquatic habitats at all Refuges, except at Mountain Longleaf and Cahaba Refuges. All collected snails were transported live to the lab where they were identified to species and dissected to determine parasite presence. Trematode parasites infecting snails in the refuges were identified to the lowest taxonomic level by sequencing the DNA barcoding gene, 18s rDNA. Gene sequences from Refuge parasites were matched with published sequences of identified trematodes accessioned in the NCBI GenBank database. -

However, little is known about the parasites of Chelonia mydas, a globally distributed endangered species, along the Brazilian coast. Here we present a review of the literature of helminth species found in green turtles along the Brazilian coast, considering their global distribution, their infection sites and their other host species. The findings show that in recent years there has been a large increase in the number of studies reporting the parasitic species of these turtles in Brazil, which consequently increased the parasite species list of the green turtle. -

Box 390, Puerto Princesa City, PH-5300 Palawan, Philippines [[email protected]]; 2Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, 94300 Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, Malaysia [[email protected]] SUMMARY . – The Southeast Asian Box Turtle, Cuora amboinensis (Family Geoemydidae), is a small (straight carapace length to 25 cm), semi-aquatic turtle, largely restricted to standing water bodies of Southeast Asia, from eastern India to Indonesia and the Philippines. It has four currently recognized subspecies: C. a. amboinensis, C. a. couro, C. a. kamaroma, and C. a. lineata. The spe- cies is still relatively common in most of its range, perhaps due to its ability to adapt to a variety of habitats, including rice fields and the vicinity of human settlements. Diet includes both plant and animal matter. The species lays 1–4 large (24–34 x 44–57 mm) eggs with masses of 14–31.5 g. The considerable variation in egg size, incubation period, and reproductive season, as evident from data derived from captive breeding, is thought to be reflective of geographic variation in this widespread turtle species. -
