Activities and studies together make up your school life. They must be considered has been together because it has been proven by experience that if one or the other neglected your high school education has not been fully rounded. By combining the tv/o

if you are forms of education you will be better able to face life after graduation than a "bookworm" at one extreme or a "flitterbug" at the other.

Rogers. Study it This Treasure Chest is a record of school activities at John R. are missing some- thoroughly. If you are not actively participating in one or more you thing more than the proverbial boat.

J. L. PURDY, Principal The First Mate Speaks . . .

The good ship John Rogers has been sailing for several generations of high school "able-bodied seamen." Each crew has contributed to the glory, to the successes, and to the traditions of this worthy bark. This year's crew has, under its able leaders, manned a commendable cruise. This, the Treasure Chest of 1952, is your log of the glories and the tribulations, of the victories and the defeats, of the ports, of the clashes on the gridiron, the court and the field.

In your own private log of the year 1951-52 did you man the sails and lay to the ropes with the spirit of a hardy seaman? Did you? Can you say with the famous early mariner, Ulysses: "I am a part of all I have met"? Certainly an overwhelming majority of our crew has been a part of all our successes, has valiantly faced the storms of un- favorable fortune and has finally warped the John Rogers to a safe port. And these who have trod our decks for the last trip, may they in their new voyages on new seas be as Ulysses: "Strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield,"

worthy men and women in all the waters of life.

The Girls' League is an or-

ganization of all the girls in our

high school, in which the inter-' ests and needs of these girls

determine its form, its purpose

and its activities. Some of the objectives of the league are: To promote friendship among

the girls, to cultivate ideals of patriotism, loyalty, personal hon-

or, responsiblity and service; to inspire achievement on scholar-

ship, leadership and school ac-

tivities. MRS. LAVELLE BLACK Girls' League Adviser

JAMES GORDON KELLOGG Born — March 22, 1933 Died — August 25, 1951

Before that August morning Jim Kellogg's life was before him just as anyone else's of his age- Jim was planning for his future with all the hope of any youth. But unlike the other June graduates he teas not given a chance to prove himself. In place of Jim there is now only a memory that remains. With the act of death comes a thought of mind. Why should a memory replace laughter, happiness and life?

It is not even equal to the joy of life. But because there is a memory, a pause xcill be in the hearts of many graduates of 1952. Hut let this be a quick pause, for Jim would want it no other -way. Jim -would not want you to suffer just as He did not want Jim to suffer and gave him a sudden death. An empty space at baccalaureate and in the hearts of this graduation class is reserved for Jim. A pleasant fello-w -with a cheery smile was removed from our midst by his Maker and can be with us only in memory at this time. June Class Elections

Washington. The 85-voice choir also performed at the annual Spring and Winter con- cert, the Christmas program, the two school convocations, the Greater Spokane Music

Festival and the Eastern Washington Music contest, where the group won a superior rating.

The Choir practices throughout the year in a regular class period and is made up of the "cream of the crop" singers at Rogers, selected by their director.

In charge of all the musical events at Rogers are the two ADVISERS pictured on the opposite page. They are responsible for a great deal of musical equipment,

musical scores and are responsible for scheduling appearances for their groups and

accompanying them. Forest lirigham is in charge of all vocal work at Rogers, while William Thomas heads the instrumental section.

They continued to "back the team" by at- tending basketball games and color days in their new service uniforms of white sweaters with a purple symbol, black skirls and Rogers' booster hats.

During the last of April and the first of May, the Rogers gym resounded to the marching feet of girls trying out for the Pirette unit or for a majorette. Those girls picked to be accepted as a member of one of the two groups will continue on next year.

Opening last Septemher with the first day in classes and closing after hectic days full of exams, lectures, labs and activities, we hope your Treasure Chest will bring back fond memories of school to you. We especially hope that this will be an accurate record for the seniors who are now finishing their high school careers. In closing we wish to thank all of the people who helped us in publishing this yearbook, espe- cially Don Townsend and his Trade School Print Shop gang, Pete Long at the Spokane American
