The distinguished scholars, who are the experts in their field of activity, are the faculty members of the school during the last five years and have contributed to these notes. Some selected papers by the alumni of the school have also been included. This version has incorporated massive changes as the Study Notes have been now compiled in three volumes as under: Volume I Jain History, Society and Culture Volume II Jain philosophy including Karma doctrine Volume III Selected topics and application of Jain doctrine to resolve modern day issues The entire academic program of the school has also been reorganized on the above lines as can be seen from the syllabus enclosed. These papers aim to give a comprehensive experience of all aspects of religion, philosophy, cosmology, metaphysics, psychology and ethics along with papers on Jain history, culture, preceptors, and evolution of different sects, rituals, art and paintings, pilgrimages and their importance. Based on the feedback received from the visiting scholars attending the school since its inception in 2005, this syllabus is being continuously updated. The curriculum designed keeps the needs of learned scholars from countries like USA, Canada, Russia, Europe, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Cuba etc. attending the summer school in mind as well as while preparing these notes. References for further research are provided at the end of each paper. Further it is hoped that these papers Provide one stop reference to participants of the school for preparing and follow up their academic program while attending the summer schools Be a guide book for further research Parshwanath Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, which has become our affiliate since 2010 and is managed by the school, deserves a note of special thanks.     Bhagwan Mahaveer & Diwali All the Jains celebrate the festival of Diwali with joy. Diwali is celebrated on the new-moon day of Kartik. On the night of that day, Bhagwan Mahavira attained Nirvan or deliverance and a state of absolute bliss. The Lord discarded the body and the bondage of all Karmas on that night, at Pawapuri In Uttara-puraana written by Acharya GunBhadra (7th or 8th century) it is mentioned that in the month of Kartika, krashna paksha, svati nakshatra and on the night of the 14th (dawn of the amavasya), lord Mahavira became a Siddha (attained nirvana). Acharya Jinasena mentions that Bhagavan Mahavira, attained nirvana at Pavapuri in the month of Kartika, Krashna paksh, during swati nakshatra, at the time of dawn. In Harivamsha-Purana sloka 19 and in sloka 20 he writes that the gods illuminated Pavanagari by lamps to mark the occasion. Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) Dr. Prabhakar Machwe (1917-1991) Prolific writer, linguist and an authority on Indian literature, Dr. Prabhakar Machwe was born on 26 December 1917 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain and obtained Masters in Philosophy, 1937, and English Literature, 1945, Agra University; Sahitya Ratna and Ph.D, Agra University, 1957. Dr. Machwe started his career as a lecturer in Madhav College, Ujjain, 1938-48. He worked as Literary Producer, All India Radio, Nagpur, Allahabad and New Delhi, 1948-54. He was closely associated with Sahitya Akademi from its inception in 1954 and served as Assistant Secretary, 1954-70, and Secretary, 1970-75. Dr. Machwe was Visiting Professor in Indian Studies Departments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California on a Fulbright and Rockefeller grant (1959-1961); and later Officer on Special Duty (Language) in Union Public Service Commission, 1964-66. After retiring from Sahitya Akademi in 1975, Dr. Machwe was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla, 1976-77, and Director of Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, 1979-85. He spent the last years of his life in Indore as Chief Editor of a Hindi daily, Choutha Sansar, 1988-91. Dr. Prabhakar Machwe travelled widely for lecture tours to Germany, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Japan and Thailand. He organised national and international seminars on the occasion of the birth centenaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo between 1961 and 1972.

    Jain Reality or Existence - By Pravin K. Shah Structural View of the Universe Jain Philosophy does not give credence to the theory that God is a creator, survivor, or destroyer of the universe. On the contrary, it asserts that the universe has always existed and will always exist in exact adherence to the laws of the cosmos. There is nothing but infinity both in the past and in the future. The world of reality or universe consists of two classes of objects: · Living beings - conscious, soul, chetan, or jiva · Non-living objects - unconscious, achetan, or ajiva Non-living objects are further classified into five categories; Matter (Pudgal), Space (Akas), Medium of motion (Dharmastikay), Medium of rest (Adharmastikay), Time (Kal or Samay). The five non-living entities together with the living being, totaling six are aspects of reality in Jainism. They are known as six universal entities, or substances, or realities. These six entities of the universe are eternal but continuously undergo countless changes. During the changes, nothing is lost or destroyed. Everything is recycled into another form. Concept of Reality A reality or an entity is defined to have an existence, which is known as Sat or truth. Each entity continuously undergoes countless changes. During this process the old form (size, shape, etc.) of an entity is destroyed, the new form is originated. The form of a substance is called Paryaya. In the midst of modification of a substance, its certain qualities remain unchanged (permanence). The unchanged qualities of a substance are collectively known as Dravya. Hence, each entity (substance) in the universe has three aspects: · Origination - Utpada · Destruction - Vyaya · Permanence - Dhruvya Both Dravya (substance) and Paryaya (mode or form) are inseparable from an entity.

    International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 3, No. 4 (2007) 1-15 A SHORT HISTORY OF JAINA LAW1 Peter Flügel The nineteenth century English neologism ‘Jaina law’ is a product of colonial legal intervention in India from 1772 onwards. 'Jaina law' suggests uniformity where in reality there is a plurality of scriptures, ethical and legal codes, and customs of sect, caste, family and region. The contested semantics of the term reflect alternative attempts by the agents of the modern Indian legal system and by Jain reformers to restate traditional Jain concepts. Four interpretations of the modern term 'Jaina law' can be distinguished: (i) 'Jaina law' in the widest sense signifies the doctrine and practice of jaina dharma, or Jaina ‘religion’. (ii) In a more specific sense it points to the totality of conventions (vyavahāra) and law codes (vyavasthā) in Jaina monastic and lay traditions.2 Sanskrit vyavasthā and its Arabic and Urdu equivalent qānūn both designate a specific code of law or legal opinion/decision, whereas Sanskrit dharma can mean religion, morality, custom and law. (iii) The modern Indian legal system is primarily concerned with the 'personal law' of the Jaina laity. In Anglo-Indian case law, the term 'Jaina law' was used both as a designation for 'Jain scriptures' (śāstra) on personal law, and for the unwritten 'customary laws' of the Jains, that is the social norms of Jain castes (jāti) and clans (gotra). (iv) In 1955/6 Jaina personal law was submerged under the statutory 'Hindu Code', and is now only indirectly recognised by the legal system in the form of residual Jain 'customs' to be proved in court.

    Introduction and background to the article on the future of Yoga in the West **updated version from 03.12.16, since first publishing** I began this project (which is now much more of a process) on a (seemingly) simple request to write an article on the future of Yoga in the west for Hindu Human Rights. Knowing yet another first­person “State of the (Yoga) Union” address would essentially have zero value in light of the bigger ​ issues in western Yoga world, I decided to base the project around a series of interviews with different people who had been involved in the discussion of how we got to where we are, i.e., this “Wild West, anything goes” concept of Yoga. Suffice it to say, as the conversations began, the project became infinitely more complex. Each one of the interviews highlighted something specific to framing the issues; each of the voices provided a myriad of “jumping off” points for further investigation and research. And with many other key collaborators besides the interviewees also involved, the depth and complexity of the topic expanded incredibly. Really, the “digging into” the topic could go on forever, but at a certain point the “getting it out” needs to take precedence in light of all that is at stake here. India is a land of Festivals. Diwali is celebrated to mark the day when Lord Ram came to Ayodhya. On this day Kali Puja performed in Bengal. For most of us Diwali is just a synonym to a night full of crackers, noise and smoke. The last day of Diwali is called as Bhaubij. Some days before Diwali we burn statues of evil King Ravana. People greet their relatives and friends with sweets and crackers. Diwali is one of them. The night of amavasya is transformed into Purnima by glory of diyas. It is a Hindu Festival. I usually have to be a vegetarian, because I go to the Alter and offer different sweets and fruits. There is a lot of noise and air pollution. Siddharth Bidwalkar. It is a festival for shopping. tatastuh lokah prativarsham-aadarat prasiddha-deepalikaya-aatra bharate samudyatah poojayitum jineshvaram jinendra-nirvana vibhuti-bhaktibhak. People of Ayodhya welcomed them with lighted oil lamps. At 6 pm we illuminate the house with candles and diyas. At dusk we do puja of Goddess Lakshmi. Do we have to pay such a heavy cost to buy a smile for ourselves. Diwali is the festival of Goddess Laxmi. Lots of people also start new ventures on this day after performing Lakshmi Puja. This is because Lord Rama defeated him. We cook sweets like kanawla, gateau patate, tekwa, gulap jamoun and many other delicacies.
