  • DESIGN CONCEPT in Brief

    DESIGN CONCEPT in Brief

DESIGN CONCEPT In Brief: The Volvo S60 was designed from the outset to be a sports saloon and a dynamic addition to the Volvo range. Peter Horbury, then Volvo's Vice President of Design and Chief Designer, and later Executive Design Director at the Premier Automotive Group, described it as “a four-door coupé” with styling inspired by the original Volvo C70 coupé. The S60 also features a ‘cockpit-forward’ look, which Horbury described as “a new way of doing sports saloons”. By moving the top of the car forwards to sit between the front wheel-arches, the designer has created a shape of unique balance and proportion. It asserts a strong, fresh identity, but the egg-crate grille and prominent shoulder lines ensure that it’s also instantly recognisable as a Volvo. In Full: • Designed as a ‘four-door coupé’ under Peter Horbury • Cockpit-forward styling – a new way of designing a sports saloon • Incorporates the latest Volvo design language • Volvo S60 R matches style with high-performance • S, Sport and SE model differentiation for added style and desirability • Aerodynamic design with Cd of 0.28 The Volvo S60 was designed from the outset to be a sports saloon and one of the most dynamic designs in the Volvo range. Peter Horbury, the then Vice President and Chief Designer at Volvo Cars, describes it as, “a four-door coupe or a two-plus-two door.” Its strident, distinctive appearance tempts customers who might have chosen other premium brand rivals such as BMW 3 series, Audi A4 or Mercedes C-class.

The New Volvo XC90: the Next Generation SUV

PRESS INFORMATION The new Volvo XC90: the next generation SUV • Passenger car based, all wheel drive SUV • Maximum flexibility for up to seven passengers • New safety solutions for roll-over and compatibility • Three engines with outputs ranging from 163 hp to 272 hp • Rear Seat Entertainment • Clean inside and out The passenger car-based Volvo XC90 is the top of the line model in the Swedish carmaker’s new XC-range. “Our all-wheel drive XC90 is a next-generation SUV, aimed to be one of the safest and most exciting on the market,” says Hans Wikman, Project Director. Muscular design “Masculine, but not macho; muscular, but not aggressive,” is how the new Volvo XC90 is described by Peter Horbury, former Vice President and Chief Designer at Volvo Cars. The muscular stance is the synthesis of a number of traditional yet unique Volvo features: • the upright front with its dark, egg-crate grille • the V-shaped hood, further emphasised on the Volvo XC90 • the broad, pronounced shoulders • the characteristic tail lamps “Nobody should be in any doubt that this is a modern Volvo,” says Peter Horbury. The muscularity of the Volvo XC90 is matched by chamfered corners front and rear, promoting a gentle, non-aggressive impression, helping the vehicle to look more homogenous. DESIGN PARALLELS Presented by: AIA Committee on Design Knowledge Community and AIA Detroit 2 ARCHITECTURE INDUSTRIAL DESIGN INTERIOR DESIGN DESIGN TRANSPORTATION DESIGN PARALLELS Detroit April 3-6, 2008 inside front cover WELCOME TO DETROIT 1 The focus of 2008 for the COD is to pursue “design parallels” in many creative fields as a way to learn more about design. Are our buildings as “green” as the latest car designs? The Committee on Design will spend the first day in the automotive design world of Albert Kahn starting with a tour of the sustainable Ford Rouge Truck Plant and the early Ford River Rouge Complex. This will be followed by tours in Detroit which will include projects by Minoru Yamasaki, Paul Cret, Michael Graves and art by Diego Rivera and Alexander Calder. In the spirit of design parallels we will visit The College for Creative Studies where auto and product design classes are taught. The CCS and Wayne State University campuses have a rich history of modern buildings by Minoru Yamasaki, William Kessler, and Kohn Pedersen and Fox. We will tour Eero Saarinen’s GM Technical Center Design Dome, and Mies van der Rohe housing. We hope to challenge ourselves in viewing architecture that serves the creative world of car design. A competition will coincide with the 2008 Committee on Design conferences which question our relationship to the car and the garage and the automobile’s new methods for energy consumption. The second day is “Cranbrook Day” where the focus will be on design and creativity in the academic setting by Eliel Saarinen.
