MAATSKAPPY, STATE, AND EMPIRE: A PRO-BOER REVISION Joseph R. Stromberg* As we approach the centennial of the Second Anglo–Boer War (Tweede Vryheidsoorlog, or “Second War for Freedom”), reassessment of the South African experience seems in order. Whether the recent surrender by Afrikaner political leaders of their “central theme” and the dismantling of their grandiose Apartheid state will lead to heaven on earth (as some of the Soweto “comrades” expected), or even to a merely tolerable multiracial polity, remains in doubt. Historians have tended to look for the origins of South Africa’s “very strange society” in the interaction of various peoples and political forces on a rapidly changing frontier, especially in the 19th century. APPROACHES TO SOUTH AFRICAN FRONTIER HISTORY At least two major schools of interpretation developed around these issues. The first, Cape Liberals, viewed the frontier Boers largely as rustic ruffians who abused the natives and disrupted or- derly economic progress only to be restrained, at last, by humani- tarian and legalistic British paternalists. Afrikaner excesses, therefore, were the proximate cause and justification of the Boer War and the consolidation of British power over a united South Africa. The “imperial factor” on this view was liberal and pro- gressive in intent if not in outcome. The opposing school were essentially Afrikaner nationalists who viewed the Boers as a uniquely religious people thrust into a dangerous environment where they necessarily resorted to force to overcome hostile African tribes and periodic British harassment. The two traditions largely agreed on the centrality of the frontier, but differed radically on the villains and heroes.1 Beginning in the 1960s and ’70s, a third position was heard, that of younger “South Africanists” driven to distraction (and some *Joseph R. -

It rests on the foot of the massive Devil’s Peak; not far from there lies the imposing Cape of Good Hope, a crossroads of two oceans. Accordingly, the university’s Latin motto is Bona Spes. With its neo- classic architecture, the university has the atmosphere of an enclave of British academic tradition in Africa. The first courses opened in 1874; since then, the UCT has produced five Nobel prizes and it forms, along with other well-established South African universities, one of the most productive research centers in the continent. I was sent there in 2009, in order to research on the history of South African audiovisual media, sponsored by Fapesp (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo). -

El documental Searching for Sugar Man (Malik Bendjelloul, 2012) cuenta la historia de Sixto Rodríguez, un cantautor del Detroit de principios de los 70 que grabó dos excelentes discos de nulo éxito en su país, pero que descubrió casi 30 años después que su música era bien conocida desde siempre en Sudáfrica, donde sus ventas se contaban por centenares de miles y sus canciones habían llegado incluso a inspirar a los movimientos sociales contra el apartheid. Lo supo gracias a dos fans de Ciudad del Cabo que, creyendo que se había suicidado tiempo atrás (algo que todos los sudafricanos daban por hecho) decidieron indagar en su misteriosa biografía, averiguando que estaba vivo y trabajaba como peón en Detroit, alejado de la industria musical. La historia, indudablemente atractiva, nos la cuentan esos dos fans,Stephen “Sugar” Segerman, propietario de una tienda de discos, yCraig Bartholomew Strydom, crítico musical. PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless. -

To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys.
