Video script Every year, millions of people watch the Oscars, one of the most important and well-known awards ceremonies in the world. However, the Oscars is not the only awards ceremony for films. There are hundreds of awards ceremonies every year, all around the world, giving prizes to actors and film-makers in categories such as best picture, best leading actor, best supporting actor, and best musical score. Although Hollywood dominates international cinema and has many awards ceremonies, it is not the only place with a hugely successful film industry. Take Bollywood, for example. Bollywood is the name given to the film industry based in Mumbai, India, and it produces over 1,000 films every year—around double the number of films made in Hollywood. As a result, there are a great number of film awards ceremonies in India—more than 20 every year, giving prizes in many different categories, including best costume design, best special effects, and even best actor playing a bad character! Regardless of where the films are made, one thing that most awards ceremonies have in common is that they celebrate the best in cinema. An exception to this is the Golden Raspberry Awards, nicknamed the “Razzies,” which celebrate the worst! Every year since 1980, the Razzies have given awards for Worst Actor and Actress, Worst Supporting Actor and Actress, Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, and Worst Picture. The ceremony is held in Los Angeles, one day before the Oscars, to attract maximum attention and media coverage. As you might imagine, the awards are not very serious. A “raspberry” is the name for the sound you make when you think something is bad, and the trophy that the “winners” receive is a large raspberry on top of a film reel. Even so, hundreds of journalists, fans, and film industry professionals from around the globe vote for the best “worst films.” Of course, to “win” a Razzie is not good—the award means that your acting, writing, or directing is terrible. Naturally, winners don’t usually attend the ceremony. But, over the years, some Hollywood stars, such as and Sandra Bullock, have shown they have a great sense of humor by attending the ceremony and receiving their award. Both of these actresses also won Academy Awards, so we shouldn’t take the Razzies too seriously. But maybe that’s the point!
