Rays Clips 5-8-10
RAYS CLIPS May 8, 2010 May 7, 2010 Tampa Bay Rays open series in Oakland by improving to 13-1 on road By Marc Topkin, Times Staff Writer Some lineup tweaks pay off as Tampa Bay keeps up its astonishing start. OAKLAND, Calif. - The decisions are made for various reasons, whether it be recent play, complex data and statistical matrixes, or even an occasional old-fashioned hunch. Friday, manager Joe Maddon said he kept Willy Aybar in the lineup because he looked good the night before and he likes his swings against left-handed pitchers. And he put Sean Rodriguez in the lineup, ahead of Ben Zobrist, based on research of Rodriguez's success against Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez in the minor leagues (4-for-5). And as good as the Rays are going, it only figures both ended up delivering key hits in the 4-1 victory that improved their baseball-best record to 22-7. "Pretty nice,'' Maddon said. David Price had something to do with it, too, sputtering a bit early but going on to pitch into the eighth in dominating style, allowing only three hits, to improve to 4-1. And when he left, after a career-high 119 pitches, with the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Choate took it from there. "David's the story,'' Maddon said. "We get that kind of starting pitching once again.'' Choate did his job twice, actually, as Evan Longoria's throwing error on the first ground ball Choate got from Daric Barton allowed a run to score. But Choate came back and got another, getting Ryan Sweeney to bounce out to shortstop Jason Bartlett. -

INTERPOL Integrity in Sport Bi-Weekly Bulletin 17-30 March 2020 INVESTIGATIONS Pakistan PCB Charges Umar Akmal for Breaching Anti-Corruption Code Controversial Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal has been charged on Friday for two separate breaches of the Pakistan Cricket Board's Anti-Corruption Code. Umar, who was provisionally suspended on February 20 and barred from playing for his franchise, Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League, has been charged for failing to disclose corrupt approaches to the PCB Vigilance and Security Department (without unnecessary delay). If found guilty, Akmal could be banned from all forms of cricket for anywhere between six months and life. He was issued the charge sheet on March 17 and has been given time to respond until March 31. This was a breach under 2.4.4 for PCB's anti- corruption code. A Troubled Career Umar, 29, has had a chequered career since making his debut in August, 2009 and has since just managed to play 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20 internationals for his country despite making a century on Test debut. His last appearance came in last October during a home T20 series against Sri Lanka and before that he also played in the March- April, 2019 one-day series against Australia in the UAE. -

Flannery: Affairs of the Heart Articles AFFAIRS OF THE HEART* MICHAEL T. FLANNERY** Baseball will be linked forever with family. Baseball is reminis- cent of fathers and sons holding hands as they enter their first ballpark together, bonding as they crack open peanuts, reach for foul balls, and cheer for their hometown heroes. While the con- cept of "Yankee" baseball particularly epitomizes these ideals, it also conjures images of sex, scandal, Hollywood stars, and tragic downfalls. In the minds of many, Yankee heroes are gods. Ultimately, however, they are just mortal men. And mortal men do not escape the randomness of life's adversities. All of our Yankee heroes have confronted the same personal issues that almost all families face, including death, divorce, custody debates, estate squabbles, domes- tic controversies, and drug addictions. For Yankee players in partic- ular, it seems the list is all too familiar. In dealing with family issues, many of our Yankee heroes have responded poorly. -
