    Interview with Benny Powell By Todd Bryant Weeks Present: Powell, his trombone student Bradley Cooper, Weeks TBW: Today is August the 6th, 2009, believe it or not, and I’m interviewing Mr. Benny Powell. We’re at his apartment in Manhattan, on 55th Street on the West Side of Manhattan. I feel honored to be here. Thanks very much for inviting me into your home. BP: Thank you. TBW: How long have you been here, in this location? BP: Over forty years. Or more, actually. This is such a nice location. I’ve lived in other places—I was in California for about ten years, but I’ve always kept this place because it’s so centrally located. Of course, when I was doing Broadway, it was great, because I can practically stumble from my house to Broadway, and a lot of times it came in handy when there were snow storms and things, when other musicians had to come in from Long Island or New Jersey, and I could be on call. It really worked very well for me in those days. TBW: You played Broadway for many years, is that right? BP: Yeah. TBW: Starting when? BP: I left Count Basie in 1963, and I started doing Broadway about 1964. TBW: At that time Broadway was not, nor is it now, particularly integrated. I think you and Joe Wilder were among the first to integrate Broadway. BP: It’s funny how it’s turned around. When I began in the early 1960s, there were very few black musicians on Broadway, then in about 1970, when I went to California, it was beginning to get more integrated.

    George ROBERT Born on September 15, 1960 in Chambésy (Geneva), Switzerland, George Robert is internationally reCognized as one of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz today. He started piano at a very early age and at age 10 he began Clarinet lessons at the Geneva Conservatory with LuC Hoffmann. In 1980 he moved to Boston and studied alto saxophone with Joe Viola at the Berklee College of MusiC. In 1984 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition & Arranging and moved to New York where he enrolled at the Manhattan SChool of MusiC. He studied with Bob Mintzer and earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz PerformanCe in 1987. He played lead alto in the Manhattan SChool of MusiC Big Band for 2 years, whiCh earned in 1985 the 1st Prize in the College Big Band Category in the Down Beat Magazine Jazz Awards In July 1984 he performed on the main stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival and earned an Outstanding PerformanCe Award from Down Beat Magazine. In 1985 & 1986 he toured Europe extensively. In 1987 he met Tom Harrell and together they founded the George Robert-Tom Harrell Quintet (with Dado Moroni, Reggie Johnson & Bill Goodwin). The group Completed 125 ConCerts worldwide between 1987 & 1992, and reCorded 5 albums. He remained in New York City and free-lanCed for 7 years, playing with Billy Hart, Buster Williams, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Jazz OrChestra, Joe Lovano, and many others. He met Clark Terry and started touring with him extensively, Completing a 16- week, 65-ConCert world tour in 1991.

Born in Papua New Guinea in 1958, Paul was raised in Melbourne where he attended Wesley College. He began classical piano lessons at the age of five, studying with Mack Jost from 1965-1978. He began informal studies in jazz around 1976, and fully devoted his energies to improvised music from 1978. During the 70’s he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived in Munich, Germany from 1980-1985, where he was active on the local and European jazz scenes, performing and recording with Johnny Griffin, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Guenther Klatt, Marty Cook and many others. He returned to Australia in 1986. In 1983, he formed the Paul Grabowsky Trio, winner of four ARIA awards and one of Australia’s longest-living and most influential jazz ensembles. He has also won two Helpmann awards, several Bell awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. As a performer, he became known for his work with the ‘Wizards of Oz’, a group he co- led with saxophonist Dale Barlow from 1987-1989 and Vince Jones, for whom he was musical director in 1988-89.

    HOW DALE BARLOW BECAME A JAZZ MESSENGER by Eric Myers _________________________________________________________ [This article first appeared in Jazzchord, Sep/Oct 1996.] ost students of Australian jazz can point to their favourite milestones, which had momentous implications for key musicians. In terms of the impact of Australian M jazz in the international arena, one might note the invitation issued by Harry Stein in Melbourne in early 1946 to Graeme Bell, asking him whether he’d like to take his band to Prague for the World Youth Festival. Or the invitation issued in 1954 by the owner of Klein’s jazz club in Detroit to Errol Buddle to take over the resident band (which included the pianist Tommy Flanagan). Or, perhaps more significantly, the subsequent invitation from another Detroit club owner Ed Sarkesian to Errol to provide a band of Australians for the Rouge Lounge (that band became the Australian Jazz Quartet). Buddle’s invitation to take over the band at Klein’s led to a significant milestone in Australian jazz: the advent of the Australian Jazz Quartet. In this league is the invitation issued in 1989 by the drummer Art Blakey in New York to Dale Barlow to become a fulltime member of the Jazz Messengers. How did this come about? How was it that an Australian saxophonist - a white musician - was able to join a band which, for 35 years, had virtually defined hard-bop, and represented one of the pinnacles of achievement in black American jazz? In 1989 Dale Barlow had returned to New York on a whim.
