November 2015 1 Paul Johnson, historian, in The Anti-Semitic Disease (June 2005) wrote: “I would call it an intellectual disease, a disease of the mind, extremely infectious and massively destructive. It is a disease to which both human individuals and entire human societies are prone. What strikes the historian surveying anti-Semitism worldwide over more than two millennia is its fundamental irrationality. It seems to make no sense, any more than malaria or meningitis makes sense. In the whole of history, it is hard to point to a single occasion when a wave of anti-Semitism was provoked by a real Jewish threat (as opposed to an imaginary one). Like many physical diseases, anti-Semitism is highly infectious, and can become endemic in certain localities and societies. Though a disease of the mind, it is by no means confined to weak, feeble, or commonplace intellects; as history sadly records, its carriers have included men and women of otherwise powerful and subtle thoughts.” 2 CONTENTS 1.     THE HALAL / KOSHER CHART The Charting Process Given the current climate and issues surrounding Kosher and Halal, the original intention was to create a simple Halal/Kosher comparison chart. On first appearances, it seemed that similarities far outweighed differences. An outcome of creating this chart, indicates that this belief is unsustainable. Information gathered fell into four areas, which appeared to parallel their commonalities. Scriptures and Laws Slaughter and its ramifications Certification Impact on consumers What seemed at first to involve a simple exercise in a comparison of commonalities demanded the exact opposite, an exercise in attending to the detail, for it is here that vast differences arise. What soon became evident was that the differences far outweigh any similarity. On reviewing the limited Halal / Kosher comparative literature, it soon became apparent that vital basic details have not been addressed adequately, if at all. Too abundant to include in this chart, are all the multifaceted, detailed Kosher laws and rabbinical responses. While there are some great rabbinical experts in Kosher, they don’t seem familiar with the details of Halal. Similarly, Imams or other writers, tend to have little knowledge of the intricacies of Kosher. Limited perspectives have contributed to many people’s belief that Halal and Kosher are two historical peas in a slaughterhouse, The media has oversimplified and enmeshed these ostensible twins, often calling for a ban on all forms of ritual meat preparation. It is well accepted that Kosher was the blueprint for Halal. Most Muslims will eat Kosher and accept Kosher-certified goods. However, in the detail, Halal is miles away from anything that resembles Kosher.

    Editorial Note: Diffused, Chronic and Evolving Global Threat Landscape In the face of a dynamically metastasising terrorist threat, the global security landscape is evolving into one that is more diffused, chronic and dispersed, where low-to-medium level individual acts of violence are becoming commonplace. The chaotic, unpredictable ways in which terrorist events unfold, is now enjoined by new actors such as the far-right movement, with the potential to further spread across the globe. Though the propensity to react violently has increased, the favoured modus operandi remains low- end urban terrorism (stabbings, vehicular ramming and use of home-made explosive devices), mainly due to the inability of like-minded extremist groups to form organisational structures and augment their capabilities for coordinated attacks. However, the very fact that these extremist entities can form virtual communities on social media and share a bond is alarming. With this as a given, the upgrading of violent capabilities is a question of when, not if. There has been a noticeable explosion of radicalism across the ideological spectrum. Various entities linked to the far-right movement in the West, some anti-establishment groups, as well as supporters and followers of global jihadist movements, namely Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS), have actively exploited the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing violent race protests in the US, to further their respective agendas. In short, it appears the chaos and volatility of current times, is mirrored within the global extremist-radical milieu. Against this backdrop, the present issue of the Counter Terrorist Trends and Analyses (CTTA) features five articles.
